CERTA L2 Developing Study Skills
Task 1 - Research
2.4
Task 1 – Research – Web source
The Founding and History of De Stijl
Piet Mondrian & Theo Van Doesburg – The pioneers of the De Stijl art form. Founded in 1917 during the
first World War in Leiden, The Netherlands. Since The Netherlands were neutral in the war, the Dutch were
not allowed to leave the country after 1914. artists were therefore isolated from the art world, during this
time they developed their own movement in the form of De Stijl.
(Mondrian sets forth the delimitations of Neoplasticism in his essay "Neo-Plasticism in Pictorial Art". He writes, "this new
plastic idea will ignore the particulars of appearance, that is to say, natural form and colour. On the contrary, it should
find its expression in the abstraction of form and colour, that is to say, in the straight line and the clearly defined primary
colour".) Extract from De Stijl Wikipedia page explaining Neoplasticism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Stijl
After 1920, De Stijl was beginning to become more than just the cubism-influenced abstract shapes on a
blank background paintings. Russian Constructivism was heavily influential towards the art movement as
now the style was being incorporated into buildings, furniture, clothing and more.

The De Stijl Style
Most paintings and designs in the De Stijl art style use only 6 different colours: 3 primary colours and
3 primary values: Black, White, Grey, Blue, Red and Yellow.
The movement was originally influenced by the massive cubism art form and later went on to
influence Bauhaus and international style architecture itself. De Stijl is everywhere and has affected
all kids of media, the buildings we see in our streets may be products of Van Doesburg’s
The reason my team and I decided to use this art style is because we found the geometric and
abstract form to be very creative and gave us a lot of possibility for the final design of our project.
The fact that the style of De Stijl has been embraced into architecture and furniture only unleashes
more possibilities of what we can do for the poster; the design of the buildings and the chairs can be
included in our work.
Personally my approach for the art exhibitions event would be a De Stijl image of the inside of the
gallery. The image itself would be made from the same colourful rectangles that the neoplasticists
use for their paintings but will also feature and original Mondrian design, in the centre.

This extract of the De Stijl: Visions of Utopia book,
gives the reader a detailed history of Van Doesburg
and the story of De Stijl. From it’s beginnings in a
Dutch magazine to the legacy that the
artist/journalist left that has changed and affected
the international art world for over a century.

De Stijl: Visions of Utopia/Robert P. Welsh + Library location:
Here are the same three paintings but in three
different styles of De Stijl. This page shows exactly
just how unique De Stijl can be. Every artist may
have their own take on the style, some stay
traditional and exclusively draw the colourful
rectangles and lines connecting them while others
can decide to make pictures using the rectangles
and create extraordinary images just by using one
shape and three colours.
Task 2a – Idea Generation [individual]
As I previously mentioned my idea for our art exhibition poster is a De Stijl
inspired image of person viewing one of Mondrian’s original compositions
of the De Stijl movement in a gallery.
After producing this edit in Photoshop, I feel like I
captured a rough edit of what I envisioned for the
final poster. Obviously this isn't a full-fledged
finished product this is just a tester to get an idea
of the poster could look like and to help find ways
I can improve my work.
Task 2a – Idea Generation [group]
Our group generation ideas were not to all share and produce the exact same
type of poster, we instead shared the finer details of the exhibitions name,
location and dates. This gave us as individuals more possibilities to be
creative and open minded while making our poster. Not being restricted
meant our imaginations were the limit and let us come up with completely
different and unique posters.
My three posters that I created on Photoshop are unique in there own way
but each promote the same thing. I personally think they succeed in catching
the eye of a passerby and interest them in the event.
Task 2b – Action Plan/Schedule
Session Activity Who is responsibile
1 Begin Web/book source for research Whole group
2 Finish research and think of shared ideas for
producing our posters
Whole group
3 Start making our posters on photoshop Whole group
4 Continue and edit making posters Whole group
5 Continue with the posters while making my
schedule and planning

6 Finish making our posters Whole group
7 Finish writing our evaluation Whole group

Task 2b – Action Plan/Schedule
3.1
In the end I think we did very well at sticking to our plans. For me I made
sure I did as many posters as possible but also had time left to write my
planning and evaluation.
Occasionally I rushed a bit of my work in my posters and PowerPoint as I
wanted to give myself enough time to finish everything. Realising I had
enough time I went back to make some final touches on all three products.
Task 2c – Planning
• My planning stages consisted of just placing black parallel lines in a
random arrangement and then experimenting in shapes and layers to
go over that. About halfway through designing my first poster I
thought of the idea of using shapes other than rectangles in the De
Stijl style and thus I used the spiral pattern in my first and last draft
for my second product.
3.2
Task 4 – Production/Final Products
3.2
3.4
Task 5 – Evaluation – Problem Solving
• Describe three problems you faced in your project and how you solved
these
• 1. Making a mistake in my work – If I make a mistake while using
Photoshop and the undo tool wont help the quickest thing I find doing is
to scrap the layer and recreate it.
• 2. Time management – Before starting production I thought about the
order and time I should spend on each poster and how much time I
should have left for the evaluation.
• 3. Losing work – In the case of losing or not saving work, I will make sure
I will have backups and continuously save my work while progressing. To
prevent stress from crashing programs or forgetting to save.
3.3
Task 5 – Evaluation – Working with others
• Choose three aspects of your production where you worked well with
your team and this benefited the project
• 1. Making decisions together – At the start of the project we all
decided on which art form to do and we ended on De Stijl.
• 2. Helping each other – Throughout production, our group helped
each other with using Photoshop and how to use the software.
• 3. Giving Feedback – We helped each other by giving feedback and
points of which we can improve on to get the best of our work.
1.2b
Task 5 – Evaluation - Feedback
• The feedback I had received shaped what my final products are now
and really helped me achieve the best version of work I could do in
that time. Even little details like adding grain to make my poster seem
like it is painted onto paper made big impacts on my work as a whole
since I saw the difference of adding textures to some layers but not
others and how much better that made my poster look
3.5
Task 5 – Evaluation – Active Engagement
• I would say I actively engaged with producing my work and that
is shown by the creativity and effort I put into it. The designs I came
up with for my three posters are original and only took inspiration
from classic De Stijl paintings by Mondrian.
• Each one of my designs have unique elements from one another and
are special in their own respect. From removing some detail in the first
poster to flipping the traditional colour scheme in the third poster.
1.2a
Task 5 – Evaluation
Accessing and storing information
•Explain where the books/resources are for your area in
the LC
•From the library on floor 2. in the arts/media section
•Explain how to take a book/resource out of the LC
•-Take the book/resource to the desk and sign it out using
your student ID
2.1
Task 5 – Evaluation
Accessing and storing information
• Explain where to store electronic information on the college network
• There are multiple locations in which we can save work:
• -H/Drive
• -OneDrive
• -My Computer
• Explain where you upload work when it is completed
• After completing work and saving it we then upload it to our blog
on Blogspot.com
2.1
Task 6 - How do you learn best?
• Explain some of the ways you think you learn best [refer to the VAK
questionnaire results in tutorial]:
• According to the VAK questionnaire I filled out, the best way I learn
and take in information is actively (kinesthetic learning) which means
in a nutshell, writing my own notes, drawing diagrams and mind
maps, using computers and other equipment are all way I like to
study effectively.
• I scored the lowest in auditory studying meaning I can easily
lose concentration while listening to someone talk or explain the task
at hand.
1.1
Task 6 - How do you learn best?
• What makes it hard for you to study?
• I tend to zone out of my work a lot after staring at the computer for
too long. I’m also quite unorganised and have a messy workspace
most of the time.
• What strategies do you think would benefit your studies?
• To help me study I think I could ask more questions about my work
and find more ways to concentrate such as chewing/listening
to music.

Cmp induction project 2019 student form

  • 1. Induction Project September 2019 CERTA L2 Developing Study Skills
  • 2. Task 1 - Research 2.4
  • 3. Task 1 – Research – Web source The Founding and History of De Stijl Piet Mondrian & Theo Van Doesburg – The pioneers of the De Stijl art form. Founded in 1917 during the first World War in Leiden, The Netherlands. Since The Netherlands were neutral in the war, the Dutch were not allowed to leave the country after 1914. artists were therefore isolated from the art world, during this time they developed their own movement in the form of De Stijl. (Mondrian sets forth the delimitations of Neoplasticism in his essay "Neo-Plasticism in Pictorial Art". He writes, "this new plastic idea will ignore the particulars of appearance, that is to say, natural form and colour. On the contrary, it should find its expression in the abstraction of form and colour, that is to say, in the straight line and the clearly defined primary colour".) Extract from De Stijl Wikipedia page explaining Neoplasticism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Stijl After 1920, De Stijl was beginning to become more than just the cubism-influenced abstract shapes on a blank background paintings. Russian Constructivism was heavily influential towards the art movement as now the style was being incorporated into buildings, furniture, clothing and more. • 4. Task 1 – Research – Web source The De Stijl Style Most paintings and designs in the De Stijl art style use only 6 different colours: 3 primary colours and 3 primary values: Black, White, Grey, Blue, Red and Yellow. The movement was originally influenced by the massive cubism art form and later went on to influence Bauhaus and international style architecture itself. De Stijl is everywhere and has affected all kids of media, the buildings we see in our streets may be products of Van Doesburg’s The reason my team and I decided to use this art style is because we found the geometric and abstract form to be very creative and gave us a lot of possibility for the final design of our project. The fact that the style of De Stijl has been embraced into architecture and furniture only unleashes more possibilities of what we can do for the poster; the design of the buildings and the chairs can be included in our work. Personally my approach for the art exhibitions event would be a De Stijl image of the inside of the gallery. The image itself would be made from the same colourful rectangles that the neoplasticists use for their paintings but will also feature and original Mondrian design, in the centre. 2.2 2.3 The De Stijl Style/https://www.theartstory.org/movement/de-stijl//Date accessed:
  • 5. Task 1 – Research – Book source De Stijl: Visions of Utopia /Robert P. Welsh + Library location: 2.2 2.3 This extract of the De Stijl: Visions of Utopia book, gives the reader a detailed history of Van Doesburg and the story of De Stijl. From it’s beginnings in a Dutch magazine to the legacy that the artist/journalist left that has changed and affected the international art world for over a century.
  • 6. Task 1 – Research – Book source 2.2 2.3 De Stijl: Visions of Utopia/Robert P. Welsh + Library location: Here are the same three paintings but in three different styles of De Stijl. This page shows exactly just how unique De Stijl can be. Every artist may have their own take on the style, some stay traditional and exclusively draw the colourful rectangles and lines connecting them while others can decide to make pictures using the rectangles and create extraordinary images just by using one shape and three colours.
  • 7. Task 2a – Idea Generation [individual] As I previously mentioned my idea for our art exhibition poster is a De Stijl inspired image of person viewing one of Mondrian’s original compositions of the De Stijl movement in a gallery. After producing this edit in Photoshop, I feel like I captured a rough edit of what I envisioned for the final poster. Obviously this isn't a full-fledged finished product this is just a tester to get an idea of the poster could look like and to help find ways I can improve my work.
  • 8. Task 2a – Idea Generation [group] Our group generation ideas were not to all share and produce the exact same type of poster, we instead shared the finer details of the exhibitions name, location and dates. This gave us as individuals more possibilities to be creative and open minded while making our poster. Not being restricted meant our imaginations were the limit and let us come up with completely different and unique posters. My three posters that I created on Photoshop are unique in there own way but each promote the same thing. I personally think they succeed in catching the eye of a passerby and interest them in the event.
  • 9. Task 2b – Action Plan/Schedule Session Activity Who is responsibile 1 Begin Web/book source for research Whole group 2 Finish research and think of shared ideas for producing our posters Whole group 3 Start making our posters on photoshop Whole group 4 Continue and edit making posters Whole group 5 Continue with the posters while making my schedule and planning Whole group 6 Finish making our posters Whole group 7 Finish writing our evaluation Whole group 3.1
  • 10. Task 2b – Action Plan/Schedule 3.1 In the end I think we did very well at sticking to our plans. For me I made sure I did as many posters as possible but also had time left to write my planning and evaluation. Occasionally I rushed a bit of my work in my posters and PowerPoint as I wanted to give myself enough time to finish everything. Realising I had enough time I went back to make some final touches on all three products.
  • 11. Task 2c – Planning • My planning stages consisted of just placing black parallel lines in a random arrangement and then experimenting in shapes and layers to go over that. About halfway through designing my first poster I thought of the idea of using shapes other than rectangles in the De Stijl style and thus I used the spiral pattern in my first and last draft for my second product. 3.2
  • 12. Task 4 – Production/Final Products 3.2 3.4
  • 13. Task 5 – Evaluation – Problem Solving • Describe three problems you faced in your project and how you solved these • 1. Making a mistake in my work – If I make a mistake while using Photoshop and the undo tool wont help the quickest thing I find doing is to scrap the layer and recreate it. • 2. Time management – Before starting production I thought about the order and time I should spend on each poster and how much time I should have left for the evaluation. • 3. Losing work – In the case of losing or not saving work, I will make sure I will have backups and continuously save my work while progressing. To prevent stress from crashing programs or forgetting to save. 3.3
  • 14. Task 5 – Evaluation – Working with others • Choose three aspects of your production where you worked well with your team and this benefited the project • 1. Making decisions together – At the start of the project we all decided on which art form to do and we ended on De Stijl. • 2. Helping each other – Throughout production, our group helped each other with using Photoshop and how to use the software. • 3. Giving Feedback – We helped each other by giving feedback and points of which we can improve on to get the best of our work. 1.2b
  • 15. Task 5 – Evaluation - Feedback • The feedback I had received shaped what my final products are now and really helped me achieve the best version of work I could do in that time. Even little details like adding grain to make my poster seem like it is painted onto paper made big impacts on my work as a whole since I saw the difference of adding textures to some layers but not others and how much better that made my poster look 3.5
  • 16. Task 5 – Evaluation – Active Engagement • I would say I actively engaged with producing my work and that is shown by the creativity and effort I put into it. The designs I came up with for my three posters are original and only took inspiration from classic De Stijl paintings by Mondrian. • Each one of my designs have unique elements from one another and are special in their own respect. From removing some detail in the first poster to flipping the traditional colour scheme in the third poster. 1.2a
  • 17. Task 5 – Evaluation Accessing and storing information •Explain where the books/resources are for your area in the LC •From the library on floor 2. in the arts/media section •Explain how to take a book/resource out of the LC •-Take the book/resource to the desk and sign it out using your student ID 2.1
  • 18. Task 5 – Evaluation Accessing and storing information • Explain where to store electronic information on the college network • There are multiple locations in which we can save work: • -H/Drive • -OneDrive • -My Computer • Explain where you upload work when it is completed • After completing work and saving it we then upload it to our blog on Blogspot.com 2.1
  • 19. Task 6 - How do you learn best? • Explain some of the ways you think you learn best [refer to the VAK questionnaire results in tutorial]: • According to the VAK questionnaire I filled out, the best way I learn and take in information is actively (kinesthetic learning) which means in a nutshell, writing my own notes, drawing diagrams and mind maps, using computers and other equipment are all way I like to study effectively. • I scored the lowest in auditory studying meaning I can easily lose concentration while listening to someone talk or explain the task at hand. 1.1
  • 20. Task 6 - How do you learn best? • What makes it hard for you to study? • I tend to zone out of my work a lot after staring at the computer for too long. I’m also quite unorganised and have a messy workspace most of the time. • What strategies do you think would benefit your studies? • To help me study I think I could ask more questions about my work and find more ways to concentrate such as chewing/listening to music. 1.1
