Today’s economic situation continues to favor the Cloud, driven by businesses reshaping themselves in the wake of recent global economic challenges. The Cloud in all of its forms – including SaaS, PaaS, IaaS and Cloud Services – will drive increasing business and IT activity, resulting in hybrid architectures to manage, and a new Cloud IT mission. However, equally important is how the Cloud is helping to transform business and drive revenue opportunities for traditional businesses, not just Cloud providers. This presentation will highlight the key trends driving the adoption of Cloud IT and Cloud Business strategies, as well as some Best Practice insights from early-adopters concerning how best to profit from new Cloud investments, while avoiding pitfalls.

In an ideal IT world we might start all over again –move entirely to public cloud providers, build applications in real time, run everything as services, and pay only for what we need. Indeed, this is exactly what some businesses are doing. However, many businesses have a ‘legacy’ of existing IT investments that generate revenue, manage cost and risk, free up people, and generally deliver a lot of value. They have plenty of challenges, but their significant and positive investment in IT does make their business better. In his session at the Up 2010 Cloud Computing Conference, Andi Mann, vice president of virtualization product marketing for CA Technologies, provided actionable advice for these businesses, covering ROI opportunities, realistic challenges and expectations, and real world examples in a step-by-step evolution from virtualization to cloud, which leverages their valuable investments in existing IT systems.

organizations innovate in the digital era. We also examine the roadmaps and investment priorities
of start-ups, venture capitalists, and leading technology vendors.
As you read the following chapters, we challenge you to think beyond the “what” of digital

harness emerging trends, innovation, and disruption to create real business value. Viewing the
horizon through this paradigm, recognize that the precision to which we’ve all become accustomed
may no longer be a given; in the age of digital innovation, we are exploring largely uncharted
territory. Moreover, any digital transformation journey should also address the more practical
realities of today—reimagining core systems, industrializing analytics capabilities, building
autonomic platforms—which are by no means trivial.
Over the next 18–24 months, the only constant may be the specter of constant change. Amid this
turmoil, organizations that can confidently and purposefully harness technology trends will find
great opportunities to refocus, to revitalize, or even to inspire. Think beyond incremental adoption
patterns. Look not only for ways to do familiar things differently, but also to do fundamentally
different things. Launch new processes, products, and services, and seek out new ways to compete.

Capgemini Cloud Strategy - Technology thought leadership. Mark Skilton
Despite mid-size business’ desire to leverage the speed, scalability, and economic value of the cloud, many well-established organizations still struggle to keep pace with in a rapidly changing business environment. To remain competitive in a cloud-first world, organizations will need to adopt a different approach to Modern IT in order to manage the ever-present change, risk, and opportunities before them.
All organizations are now looking to the cloud as a possible model for enterprise IT delivery. Zero -capex, pay-per-use and radical scalability become the incentives. But there are risks too, with communication and data security, enterprise standards, compliance and service consistency all causes for concern.
This condensed document summarizes Getronics thinking and position on enterprise cloud adoption.

#OSSPARIS19 : The evolving (IoT) security landscape - Gianluca Varisco, ArduinoParis Open Source Summit
IoT is at the peak of the hype cycle - what they call the 'Peak of Inflated Expectations’. The complexity of the cybersecurity landscape is at an all-time high, with security researchers, vendors and even governments all trying to come to a consensus for making the cyber-world a safer place. In this world of lightning-fast development cycles, it may intuitively feel like security gets left behind. The battle over standards is always a struggle. The unresolved problem of software updates and short vendor support cycle combined with the lack of effort into security makes these devices an easy target. Companies not only need to update their technology stack for the evolving security landscape but also their mindset, processes and culture. This talk will shine a light on some of the challenges that today’s executives face in finding and fixing systemic problems in and outside of security through people, tools and understanding.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:

2. Accelerating Business and IT Velocity
In the wake of the “Great Recession,” businesses of all sizes are
reshaping themselves to better compete in an increasingly
intertwined and complex global economy.

customers, as well as carving out new business opportunities.
Large businesses are waking up! Recent discussions with senior
business and IT leaders repeatedly emphasized both the power and the
threat of the Cloud – especially around the concept of accelerating
“Business Velocity” for firms developing / implementing in the Cloud.
Key benefits cited include substantially faster time-to-market and time to profit.
time to market time-to-profit
In this environment, IT is increasingly being asked not only to help
companies save money and facilitate internal process improvement, but
to better enable the business to grow with differentiated new products,

services and offerings.
Given this, it isn’t surprising that “IT Velocity” has replaced
“IT / Business Alignment” as the top concern for many CIOs.

– “Our challenge is to never build another data center. It is a very expensive proposition, and we’d
rather not have to do that.”
– “Our focus right now is mostly around the Cloud as a means to provide services internally”.
– “[The Cloud has] allowed us to drive a level of simplification . . . [and] helped us articulate the [high]
[The
cost of customization [to the business] that we haven’t been able to do in the past.
– “We are not yet comfortable with the idea of using Public Clouds to provide our services; we think
that our customers typically [will] want a throat to choke.”
President Corporate Ops and Technology Financial Services
President, Technology,
– “A lot of the differentiation that we had inside [our company] is becoming meaningless now because
Cloud infrastructures are coalescing around a LAMP stack, or some version of it.”
– “[With] legacy . . . there will be a slow migration to technologies that are equivalent to Cloud and, as
Cloud continues to decrease in cost, the semi-private and public clouds will start to receive more
workloads in the 5-10 year timeframe.”
– “As it concerns the ‘new,’ people are going to implement completely in the Cloud or using Cloud-
like technologies from the get-go.”
VP Global Strategy, Customer Communications Management Provider
– “The old way of doing product development has been very structured and routine and isn’t going to
work [in the Cloud].”
– “The whole concept of agility that is required to get new businesses up can be dealt with so much
easier in the Cloud, both in terms of the underlying technology and product development. It is way
easier to bootstrap a new offering by leveraging the inherent pay as you go pricing of the Cloud ”
