Poor project management can turn a promising new project into the project from hell. From tight deadlines and crushing budgets, to last minute changes that make you want to give up and open a bakery. But project management is an area you must dominate if you want to run a successful creative studio or agency. We all know what it's like when a client requests changes here, there and everywhere, but all of these little changes can add up to much bigger problems; project management hell! Don't let it happen to you.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. Constraints
There hasn't been any real constraints with my project as I was easily able to
find a font that i could use on my business card that was free of any
copyright. Another factor that i avoided getting any constraints was with the
image that I used on the card. This wasn't a problem at all with copyright
infringement as I took the image and edited it myself meaning that it was
free from any copyright issues. There were also no financial straints as all of
the software i used to produce the business cards were free from college.
Once I finished my production work I then emailed over the design to my
client so that they could print it in their own right meaning it cost me nothing
financially and was my clients decision to go ahead and print the business
cards on their own terms.
3. How well did I manage the project?
I feel as if I handled this specific projhect relatively well. My only slight
downfall was my time management as it took me a couple of days longer to
complete my production work as i had originally intended (original time
schedule shown in my idea development). However after finishing slightly
later than i wanted too I was overall very happy with the outcome of my
business card as it looked just how I wanted it too and how my orginal idea
looked in both mine and my clients head. My client didn't have a specific
timesclae that they wanted me to work too so they were happy with both the
time it took me to complete the card as well as the overall look of the
business card. In conclusion I am very pleased with the way I managed the
project as I completed it all by myself and did so to a reasonably good
standard and in a reasonably good timescale that both myself and my client
were happy with.
4. Time management
As previously mentioned my time management was the only slight downfall to
my production. Although my client didn't give me a specific timescale for me
to complete the project I set myself a target of when I wanted to have each
stage done by (can be seen in my idea development) I created a schedule in
which I stated I wanted my product completed within two weeks of beginning
the work. Looking back now I feel as if this was a bit optimistic as I had a lot
more to do than what I first thought, especially when it came to the choosing
a final image and the post production of it. In the end I was a couple of days
out of my original target for completing my finished business card however it
didn't matter too much due to the fact my client had no real rush for me to
get it finished and was in fact impressed with how quick i got it done meaning
that I didn't manage my time too badly in the end.
5. How well did I manage to communicate
with the client?
When it came to communicating with the client it was very easy for me as I
regularly saw them face to face. The communication was both clear with both
parties as to what we were intending to create and how the finished product
would look like and what should be included in it. I frequently checked in on
my client throughout the process via email and text and kept them up to date
as to how the project was coming along, my client was also keen to respond
back to me saying that they were impressed with how their business cards
was coming along as well as us both suggesting ideas to each other on how to
better the finished product to make it suitable and unique for my clients
company so that they could use them regularly in the futre for their potential
clients.
6. How did I meet the requirements of the
brief?
As I have previously stated the brief I was given wasn't extremely specific,
which can be both a positive and negative. On the one hand you can see it as
a good thing as it left room for me to add my own creative spin on it and
allowed me the freedom to set the card out in whatever way I liked, however
it can also be seen as a negative as I won't have a lot of information to go on
in order to start the project and I may end up creating something that I think
looks good that my client may not end up liking. The only requirements my
client gave me to me was to include the companies main logo somewhere on
the business card (they sent me there logo) as well as, including some of the
company's main contact details which was also provided to me. Apart from
that freedom was granted me to design the business card in a way that I
thought was unique and would suit the company.
7. What have I learnt for future tasks?
Throughout taken part in this project, I have learnt new things. The main thing I
have learnt is how to work for a client professional, thus improving my industry
knowledge and experience and dealing with clients in a professional manner.
I have also learnt how to manage my time in a much more efficient way, I feel
that both my pre and psot production were done In a timely manner however
when it came to actually executing my product and creating it it took me
slightly longer than expected. When I come to future tasks I will make sure to
improve the way in which I manage my time and will thoroughly plan out each
stage of my work beforehand so I have a better idea of how long the project will
realistically take me. In future I will also organise all my work into one specific
and accessible file whilst also ensuring I have a backup copy of all of my work in
case it got lost or crashed somehow so that it is easy to get too and also gives
me peace of mind that if something crashes or goes wrong on my computer then
I always have backup copies saved elsewhere that are relatively easy for me to
get a hold of.
