 Born November
14, 1840 in
Paris, France.
 During
secondary
school he was
already selling
small Charcoal
caricatures for
15-20 francs.
 His mother died
in 1857, and so
he went to live
 June 1861 he
joined the First
Regiment of
African Light
Cavalry in Algeria
with a 7 year
contract
 After two years in
Africa he
contracted
Typhoid and was
removed from the
army by his
concerned aunt
on the condition
that he continue
with his studies in
art
As a Young Adult
Art Work
 Claude Monet was famous
for his “en plein air”
landscape paintings. “En
plein air” in French means
“In Plain air”.
 He was one of the founders
of the French Impressionistic
movement, and without him
the Impressionist art work
would have never developed
the way it did.
 He was influenced and
taught by famous French
artist Eugene Boudin
 Claude Monet became close
friends with many other
famous French impressionist
such as Edouard manet,
Camille Pissaro, and August

 In 1874 he joined in
creating an exhibition
with the incredible
French painters Edgar
Degas, Renoir,
Callmille Pissarro,
and Eouard Manet.
 Claude was allowed
to go to an art show
named “Salon” twice.
The second time he
went the painting he
had on display was a
portrait of his future
Interesting facts
 Claude was so passionate
about the perfection of his
work that it is estimated he
destroyed 500 of his own
paintings in fits of anger.
 He was also known for his
emotional instability by
going through many
phases of depression and
self-doubt.
 He was not successful
during his lifetime, and his
paintings’ lack of detail
were humorous according
to many critics.
 His works were critically
acclaimed and he lived his
entire life in financial
hardship
 It was not until much later
Later Life
 In June 1870 he
married Camille
Doncieux who posed for
many of his paintings.
 Camille died during her
pregnancy of their
second child
 Monet married again a
women named Alice in
1892
 He spent the rest of his
life painting scenes of
outdoor sceneries.
 Claude Monet died of
lung cancer on
December 5 in 1926
