Claude Monet was a French painter and founder of Impressionism. He painted en plein air, seeking to capture the changing effects of light and atmosphere rather than depicting scenes realistically. Monet is known for his series paintings of the same subject under different lighting conditions, such as his paintings of poplars, haystacks, and the facade of Rouen Cathedral, which helped establish abstract painting. He spent the latter part of his life painting water lilies at his home in Giverny, developing a looser style using broad brushstrokes.
