44. Vincent Van Gogh

45. Vincent van Gogh was born in the Netherlands in 1853.
He had 2 brothers and 3 sisters, but he was closest to his
brother, Theo.

46. When Vincent was younger, he sketched pictures using pencils
or charcoal sticks. He used some watercolors as well.
“The Potato Eaters”
He liked to draw pictures of poor hardworking people, and
often used dark colors. Eventually, he began to paint using oil
paints.

47. Much of what we know about Van Gogh comes from letters he
wrote to his brother Theo.
Theo worked in an art gallery in Paris and supported Vincent's
art career.
He sent Vincent money and tried to sell Vincent's paintings, but
no one wanted to buy them.

48. In 1886 Vincent moved to Paris to meet other artists called
Impressionists. Vincent wanted to learn from these new
painters.
During this time van Gogh began to use brighter colors.
He painted pictures of Paris nightlife and the countryside.

49. Van Gogh also became interested in painting portraits of
people. When he couldn't find models, he would paint himself
for practice. He painted over twenty self portraits during this
time.

50. In 1889, van Gogh went to a mental hospital, because he
was unable to take care of himself.
He still continued to paint and completed one of his most
famous paintings Starry Night from his hospital bed.

51. Most people know Van Gogh as the artist who cut
off his left ear. After an argument with his friend,
Van Gogh cut part of his left ear off with a razor.
He wrapped the ear up in cloth and gave it to a
woman as a ‘present’.

52. Tragically, Van Gogh's mental state continued to get worse.
On July 29, 1890 – at the age of 37, he died from a gun shot
wound to his chest. He died in the arms of Theo.

53. Although he wasn't famous during his lifetime, today he is
considered one of the greatest artists of his time.
Many of his paintings sell for millions of dollars. There are over
800 oil paintings and a thousand water colors and sketches of
his work.

54. Interesting Facts about Van Gogh:
• He would get so obsessed with painting that he often
wouldn't eat. He had poor health as a result.
• Van Gogh was influenced by Japanese prints which he
studied intensely.
• His brother Theo died six months after Vincent and was
buried next to him.
• You can see the painting Starry Night at the New York
Museum of Modern Art.

55. Pablo Picasso

56. Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881 in Spain. His
father was a painter and art teacher, and Pablo liked to draw
from an early age.
As a student, Pablo had little interest in school, but was an
extremely talented artist.

57. When he was fourteen Pablo attended a famous art school in
Barcelona and another school in Madrid.
However, Pablo was bored with the classic teachings of art
school. He didn't want to paint like people hundreds of years
ago. He wanted to create something new.

58. In 1901, Pablo's close friend committed suicide. Pablo became very sad.
Around the same time he began painting in Paris, and his painting style
started to transform.
For the next four years his paintings were mostly the color blue. This is
called. Many of the people were sad looking with long, blue faces.
The Blue Period

59. The Rose Period
Eventually Pablo got over his depression. He also fell in love
with a French model. He began to use warmer colors in his
paintings including pinks, reds, oranges, and beiges.
He also began to paint happier scenes such as circuses.

60. Cubism
In 1907 Picasso began to experiment with a new style of
painting. By 1909 he had created a completely new style of
painting called Cubism.
In Cubism, the subjects are broken up into different sections.
Then the sections are put back together and painted from
different points of views.

61. In the 1920’s, Pablo’s career really grew, and he became
a world-respected artist. This was thanks to the help of
his wife.
Picasso met and married a ballerina – she introduced him
to the rich and famous people around Paris. There, his
art started selling for a lot of money.

62. Picasso also acted in movies and always played himself in his
film appearances. He became famous for his anti-war views.
After his death, France kept many of his paintings. Today, much
of his work hangs in a collection at the Musée Picasso in Paris.

63. Today, Pablo Picasso is considered the greatest artist of the 20th
century. He painted in a number of different styles and created
many unique contributions to the world of art.
He was married twice and had four children. He died from a heart
attack at the age of 91 on April 8, 1973.

• He produced over 1,800 paintings and 1,200 sculptures.
• Many of his paintings have been sold for over $100 million!
• Picasso was a famous playboy – he had many, many
girlfriends throughout his life.
• Picasso’s final words were “Drink to me, drink to my health,
you know I can’t drink any more.”

65. FRIDA KAHLO

66. Frida Kahlo's life wasn't easy, but she lived life confidently and
went on to become one of the most famous artists of her time.

67. Frida Kahlo was born July 6, 1907 near Mexico City. When she
was six, Kahlo got polio, a disease that affects your ability to walk
and move.
She had to spend nine months in her bed.

68. Once she got better, Frida Kahlo promised that she would live
her life to the fullest.
She became a tomboy at school and the leader of a group of
children(mostly boys) who liked to prank (play tricks on) other
students and teachers.

69. Tragedy found Frida once again in 1925, when shewas 18. The
school bus she was riding in crashed into a car. Frida was
broke her back.
However, it was during her a long recovery from this accident
that Kahlo discovered her love of painting.

70. Frida met mural artist Diego Rivera in 1928, when she was 21 and
he was 42. They married a year later. Diego encouraged Frida to
continue her art; However, they had
a very difficult marriage.

71. Frida created over 200 paintings, drawings and sketches related
to her experiences in life, physical and emotional pain, and her
difficult marriage. She’s most famous for her self-portraits.
When asked why she painted so many self-portraits, Frida
replied: "Because I am so often alone, because I am the person
I know best."

73. Frida Kahlo soon suffered another injury; Her right leg had to be
amputated due to an infection.
On July 13, 1954, at the age of 47, Frida Kahlo died. The last
entry in Kahlo's diary read, "I hope the leaving is joyful and I
hope never to return."

74. Facts about Frida:
• During her life, Frida always wanted to go against what was
“Normal”. That’s why she kept her facial hair - it was going against
what was thought to be “Beautiful” for women.
• Frida wanted to have a child badly, but she couldn’t due to her
many injuries.
• Frida spent most of her life in-and-out of hospitals.
• Frida’s home was turned into a museum after her death
