Claude Monet was a famous French painter born in 1840 who was a leading figure in the Impressionist movement. He was known for painting the same scene many times to capture changing light and seasons. In 1883, Monet lived in Giverny where he began painting his famous water lilies series in his lily ponds, first with vertical views of a Japanese bridge and later in large-scale works. By 1912, Monet developed cataracts and his vision deteriorated, requiring surgery in 1923. Some of Monet's most famous paintings include Impression, Sunrise, Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies, and The Houses of Parliament, Sunrise.
