Carl Linnaeus, a Swedish scientist, classified the living world into two kingdoms: the plant kingdom and the animal kingdom. He developed a hierarchical system of classification consisting of kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species to categorize organisms. Species are composed of the same kind of organisms, genera are composed of various species, families are composed of various genera, and so on up the hierarchy to kingdoms, which are composed of various phyla and encompass the entire living world.
