This document analyzes qualitative research approaches used in information literacy research from 2011-2014. The author conducted a literature review of 102 articles and identified 27 that used qualitative or mixed methods. The main methodological approaches identified were qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods designs. Common qualitative research methods included case studies, ethnography, and action research. Qualitative data sources frequently used were interviews, focus groups, and documents. Conceptual frameworks drawing on sociocultural theories and information practices were also common. In closing, the author notes mixed methods were often used to study information literacy in education while qualitative designs analyzed everyday life information literacy topics like health.
