Managing Human Relations
Definition of Human Relations In our business world today, people who enter the workforce are
discovering that interpersonal skills represent a very important category of basic skills valued by
employers.
These skills can also help us to cope with a wide range of work life issues and conflicts that surface in
our lives. Besides that, these skills will also help us in areas such as interviewing to get a job in the
future, improving our personal communication skills and building and thus maintaining productive
relationships with others in the workplace. These skills lead to a term which is known as human
relations. Human relations is defined in its broadest sense which covers all types of interactions
among people. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the reasons is because organizations are advancing more to the age of
Information Technology (IT) and many things in the world nowadays are done by machines and
requires a minimal amount of manpower. This will lessen the job opportunities and even those who
have worked in the particular workplace will be forced to resign or quit their respective jobs. As an
effect of this, many organizations will shortlist those workers who are performing at a full pace and
achieving more goals than others to remain in the company and then hand in a resignation letter for
those workers who are underperforming or those who failed to achieve their goals. In order to tackle
this issue, many companies nowadays spend most of their time to train their employees so that they
could be better workers and would help the company to achieve more success in the future. When the
company trains their employees, the employees are expected to understand on what is required of
them during the day at work. Employees are also required to continuously build relationships with
their employers or managers of the company and also learn to accept the other employees which are
working together with them. In addition, another major reason on why human relations is important in
workplaces is because most companies are growing bigger and bigger compared to few years back.
Many large companies

The Economics of Baseball Essay
The Economics of Baseball The economics of baseball has grown since the beginning and has become
more complicated every year. Baseball players are now making millions of dollars to do something
that they love and enjoy. It s not their fault the money they can receive has reached the million mark,
even for some of the less talent of ball players. This has happened to all sports, but especially to the
American pastime. Baseball is more of a business than just a game and many things have made it this
way. A lot of reasons have contributed to the rising salaries there is today and it will not stop there.
The amount of baseball contracts will keep rising each year. One of the most notable people to receive
an unbelievable contract ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many people believed he was crazy to spend this much money on one player, but Tom Schieffer stated
that Hicks has a good understanding of the economics of sports (Rangers). Alex Rodriguez is just one
example of this growing business and many other ball players are getting paid an unreasonable
amount. Most teams to take care of this have raised ticket prices. Two thirds of the thirty teams in
MLB have raised the cost of a ticket for the 2001 season. Baseball tickets are the cheapest among
professional sports, but they re catching up(MLB). The average ticket in 2000 was 16.65 dollars,
according to Team Marketing Report(MLB). Now, it costs a fan twenty dollars for a bleacher seat at
Wrigley Field , 31 dollars to watch the Yankees from the cheap seats, and forty to sit in the
grandstands at Fenway Park(MLB). The rise in ticket prices has contributed to the rise in the cost to
have a baseball player play for your team. Many teams are coming up with other ways to be able to
pay these high priced athletes without leaving out the normal fan. Several teams have increased
premium seating and are offering special packages for people and corporate entertainers, who have
money to spend. For example, the L.A. Dodgers have not raised ticket prices but offer a Dugout Club
seat behind home plate for 225 dollars(MLB). More

The Changing Role Of Animation In The 1940 s
During the 1940 s America was fighting battles both at home and overseas, both on screen and off.
The reason being, World War II changed the possibilities of animation. Before the war, animation was
only used for comedy and entertainment. Animation were these shorts played with color, music, and
storytelling both hand drawn and computer animated. The attack on Pearl Harbor was a turning point
in this form of entertainment because never before has the movie industry and nation been so aligned
with interests and goals. To explain, Film studios used animated characters to spread propaganda and
educate Americans about their enemies. And the animators themselves were employed to make
insignia for military units and equipment (Stillich). In brief, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

President Franklin D. Roosevelt, a longtime supporter ... of the movie industry allowed Hollywood to
continue commercial operations so longs as it cooperated with Washington in actively supporting the
war effort (Schatz 2). The films provided reasons beyond entertainment for the production of
animation, government and military officials, needed a way to reach a wide audience during the war.
They were intended to help build morale for the public, and allowed Americans to release their anger
and frustration through crude humor to simply reflect the war culture. Disney in particular made many
wartime cartoons that showed what was happening inside the United States during the war, and reflect
the cultural moment in which they were made. For instance, Daffy Duck was one of the popular
characters from Walt Disney that was used for the war effort. In a short film, called Scrap Happy
Daffy describes Daffy as he defends his scrap yard against a metal eating Nazi goat sent by an enraged
Adolf Hitler. The cartoon asks citizens to donate to the war effort by listing items which can be given

Music Analysis Essay
First Selection: The Stars and Stripes Forever John Philip Sousa (1854 1932)
First Hearing
Cheerful, Eventful, Very Exciting
Second Hearing
Sousa created a marching band that was organized like the European marching band. The music
makes me feel exciting like I am at a parade, and they have a marching band perform this song.
Third Hearing
A marching band of numerous brass instruments (piccolos, flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons,
saxophones, trumpets, coronets, euphoniums, trombones, Sousaphones, tubas and percussion) are
being played throughout the song and creating a marching beat of duple meter.
The dynamic is contrasting because the loudness of the instruments is continuingly changing.
The texture is both polyphony and homophony ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The tempo is fast until the middle of the song where it slows down. It then increases the speed back to
fast.
Second Selection: Le bananier Louis Moreau Gottschalk
First Hearing
Showy, admirable, dark
Second Hearing
The composer wrote this charming piece of music because he knows the audience likes showy pieces.
It was based on the appeal of tunes he heard during his childhood. I enjoy the sound of the piano being
played, and I loved how the composer uses it to make this very admirable piece.
Third Hearing
This beautiful sound of music is being played by a piano. The piano was an excellent choice of
instrument because it brings the sound of tunes that the audience enjoys.
The dynamics is loud then it changes to louder at parts. When I first listen to it, it made me jump a
little due to the fact it caught me off guard.
The tempo is fast throughout the song.
The tone color is dark in a way that is exciting.
The harmony has both minor and major key being played. Minor keys are being played first then in
the middle of the song, the pianist used the major keys.
The centerpiece has a melody that is based off of Creole

Arguments Against Recurrent Stroke
Stroke is a public health burden that affects 15 million people worldwide (World Health Report,
2002), approximately 795,000 people per year in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, America s Burden on Stroke, 2012) and specifically in Mississippi, stroke is the fifth
leading cause of death (Mississippi Vital Statistics, 2014). Approximately 610,000 are first or new
strokes and approximately 185,000 strokes, nearly one of four, four; occur in individuals that have had
a previous stroke (Mozaffarian, Benjamin, Go, et al, 2015). Currently, there are more than 6.2 million
noninstitutionalized adults who have had a stroke in the United States (Faststats, CDC, National
Center for Health Statistics, 2012).

Physical activity can improve health and lower risk for heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes,
depression, and some cancers, (CDC, 2014). Even though physical activity can reduce recurrent
stroke, stroke survivors are not engaging in physical activity at optimal levels to protect against
recurrent stroke. In their research, Boysen Krarup, pg. 148, (2013) found that following a stroke,
sequelae such as hemiparesis and ataxia may limit the trainability of stroke patients and lead to
decreasing levels of physical activity and physical performance. Historically, motivation to exercise
has also been cited in the literature as a deterrent and a facilitator to exercise among the stroke
survivor population (Damush, Plue, Bakas, Schmid Williams, 2007). According to a study conducted
by researchers Mohan, Wolfe, Rudd, Heuschmann, Kolominsky Rabas, Grieve, (2011) patients who
survive an initial stroke are at a significantly increased risk for future strokes compared with the
general population; a systematic review and meta analysis showed that the cumulative risk of stroke
recurrence was 3.1% at 30 days, 11.1% at 1 year, 26.4% at 5 years and 39.2% at 10 years.
Furthermore, recurrent strokes are more likely to be disabling or fatal compared with the first stroke

An Description Of An Exact Dissipation Model For Arbitrary
Referee Report: Manuscript ID# OL: 280139
PAPER DESCRIPTION
In the paper titled An exact dissipation model for arbitrary photonic Fock state transport in waveguide
QED systems , Chen et al. have presented a dissipation model to study the Fock and coherent state
transport through waveguide QED (wQED) systems. As the main novelty of their work, they have
modelled the environment as a 3D scattering channel (described in a real space picture similar to the
waveguide modelling) and it has been shown that a reduced Hamiltonian can be obtained for arbitrary
photon number Fock state which can describe the photonic transport with a restricted eigenstate. To
illustrate, one , two , N photon and coherent state examples are presented. Finally, two simple
geometries of the scattering channel are considered namely the uniform medium and a slab
waveguide. Authors have also very briefly pointed out the applicability of their model in cavity QED.
COMMENTS AND DECISION
Overall the paper has interesting findings and is systematically presented. In particular, the modelling
of the environment as a non excitable 3D scattering channel, is the key attraction in this work.
Moreover, the authors have made claims which seems not to be exaggerated. However, there are some
points in this work which can be ambiguous to the interested reader. Therefore, I can recommend
publication of this paper in the Optics Letters, provided the authors performs the following revisions:

The Battle Within Bowe Bergdahl
The Battle Within Bowe Bergdahl
The second season of the podcast series, Serial, hosted by Sarah Koenig, an American Journalist,
focuses on a soldier named Bowe Bergdahl, who, at the age of 19, enlisted into the Coast Guard.
Bowe Bergdahl only lasted a couple weeks in training due to the fact that he was diagnosed with
situational anxiety. Without proper guidance, the Army did not look into Bergdahl s diagnosis.
Therefore, Bowe Bergdahl was able to re enlist into the army. Because the Army neglected to check
Bowe s medical history, Bowe caused a Dustwun in the middle of Afghanistan in 2009, and was later
captured by the Taliban. As a result, the Taliban established a trade with the United States. In
exchange for Bowe Bergdahl, the Taliban wanted five of their commanders who were held by the
United States in Guantanamo Bay. However, the Army could have prevented Bowe from being held
captive, if the military had checked Bowe s records. Therefore, the army was at fault for allowing a
mentally ill soldier to re enlist in the army.
According to a study constructed by JAMA Psychiatry, a medical journal published by the American
Medical Association, explained that one out of five soldiers, who have enlisted into the military have
suffered from a mental disorder (Hastings). With this statistic, there are doubts regarding the military s
assessments of the enlisted. Matthew Nock, a Harvard University psychologist, led a study on mental
disorders in the military, and concluded that

Plot
PLOT OF INTO THE WILD (FILM) The film is presented in a nonlinear narrative, jumping back and
forth between McCandless s time spent in Alaskan wilderness and his two year travels leading up to
his journey to Alaska. The plot summary here is told in a more chronological order. In May 1992,
Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch) arrives in a remote area just north of the Denali National Park
and Preserve in Alaska and sets up a campsite in an abandoned bus. At first, McCandless is content
with the isolation, the beauty of nature around him, and the thrill of living off the land. He hunts wild
animals with a .22 caliber rifle, reads books, and keeps a diary of his thoughts as he prepares for
himself a new life in the wild. Two years ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
McCandless then travels to the Colorado River and, though told by park rangers that he may not kayak
down the river without a license, ignores their warnings and paddles downriver until he eventually
arrives in Mexico. There, his kayak is lost in a dust storm and he crosses back into the United States
on foot. Unable to hitchhike, he starts traveling on freight trains to Los Angeles, California. Not long
after arriving, however, he starts feeling corrupted by modern civilization and decides to leave. Later,
McCandless is forced to switch his traveling method back to hitchhiking after he is beaten by the
railroad police. In December 1991, McCandless arrives at Slab City in the Imperial Valley region of
California, and encounters Jan and Rainey again. There, he meets Tracy Tatro (Kristen Stewart), a
teenage girl who shows interest in McCandless, but he rejects her because she is underage. After the
holidays, McCandless decides to continue heading for Alaska, much to everyone s sadness. While
camping near Salton City, California, McCandless encounters Ron Franz (Hal Holbrook), a retired
man who recounts the story of the loss of his family in a car accident while he was serving in the
United States Army. He now occupies his time in a workshop as an amateur leather worker. Franz
teaches McCandless the craft of leatherwork, resulting in the making of a belt that details McCandless
travels. After spending several months with Franz,

Candide By Voltaire And The Song `` Pursuit Of Happiness...
Throughout history people have been looking for something that made life special, spectacular, or one
of a kind. Today, this search is known to the world as the pursuit of happiness . The phrase use was
heightened during the enlightenment period and lingered for long after. This impact of its use did not
only impact the way life was looked at but also impacted the arts during that time and for the future.
Two pieces that show this evidence is the novel Candide by Voltaire and the song Pursuit of Happiness
by Kid Cudi. Both of these works, even though they were published more than two centuries apart,
carry the theme of the pursuit of happiness. These pieces are evidence of the unchanging pursuit that
mankind goes through.
The beginning of the pursuit is where both of the stories start off. Where the characters get a taste of
what they believe to be pure happiness . In Kid Cudi s song, the narrator finds what they believe to be
happiness in drugs and alcohol. Crush a bit, little bit, roll it up take a hit... I don t care hand on the
wheel, drivin drunk I m doin my thing. (AZ Lyrics) However, in Voltaire s Candide, the character
Cunegonde starts an infection of the search in the other character through the observation of Pangloss,
her teacher, giving her mother s chambermaid a lesson in natural experimental philosophy (3 Voltaire)
in the park. She was filled with the desire to be learned; dreaming that she might well be a sufficient
reason for young Candide, and he

The Life of Queen Elizabeth I Essay
The Life of Queen Elizabeth I
Queen Elizabeth was born in Greenwich Palace on September 7, 1533.
She died on March 24, 1603, of natural causes. Her father was Henry VII.
His second wife, Anne Boleyn was Elizabeth s mother. King Henry wanted a son, but received a
daughter, instead, from his second wife. Before
Elizabeth s third birthday, Henry had her mother beheaded on charges of adultery and treason.
Elizabeth was brought up in a separate household at Hatfield (not known). King Henry s third wife
gave birth to a son. This boy was named
Edward. Edward was declared first in line for King Henry s throne, while
Mary (Daughter of Henry s first wife) was declared second, and Elizabeth was declared third and ...

At this time, Elizabeth s Privy council drew up a Bond of Association which pledged that its signers,
in an attempt on Elizabeth s life, would kill the assassins along with the claimant to the throne who the
attempt was made for. In the mid 1580s, it was clear that a direct military confrontation between
England and Spain was unavoidable in the near future.
Word reached London that the Spanish king, Philip II, had started to assemble together an enormous
fleet that would sail to the Netherlands, and join forces with a waiting Spanish army led by the duke of
Parma. After joining forces, this fleet would proceed to invade and probably conquer the now
protestant England.
The always conservative queen reluctantly had authorized sufficient funds to maintain a fleet of
maneuverable, well armed fighting ships, to which other ships from the merchant fleet would be
added.
In July 1588, the Invincible Armada reached the English water and the queen s ships. In one of the
most famous naval encounters of history, the queen s ships defeated the enemy fleet, which then in an
attempt to return to Spain, was all but destroyed by terrible storms.
At the time when the Spanish invasion was expected, Queen Elizabeth decided to review in person, a
detachment of soldiers assembled at Tilbury.
She was dressed in a white gown and a silver breastplate and she rode through the camp and
proceeded to deliver a

Final Exit Research Paper
Final Exit. The name is very to the point and feels like a way out in the darkness. As we were taught
as children if there is a fire in a building you head towards the exit signs. In this metaphoric example
the person s body is the building on fire and the exit is death. Although final exit is not the only way
out there are other organizations that will do the same thing. Among them Dignitas, Compassion and
choices, dignity in dying, exit, and the world federation of right to die societies are to name some.
What all these organizations have in common is there want to allow others a death with dignity. They
give those who are suffering a way out, when death is far better choice than living.
Dignitas Began in 1998 in Forch Switzerland. They open their doors with the statement to live with
dignity to die with dignity (Dignitas). Although soon they had to close those same doors after
neighbors started to complain about all the sirens. The interior of the Dignitas house, the place where
people go to die, is about as comfy as a three star hotel . Everything looks cheap and the colors clash.

Nonetheless the early decision making processes are universal to the human condition. Within the
psychotherapeutic frame work of processes these are summarised as consciousness raising, social
liberation, emotional arousal, self revaluation, commitment, rewards and helping relationships, these
aspects will be examined in relation to the researcher s process of transformation. The researcher
discovered that two aspects were not applicable to her methodology, these were countering and
environmental control. Lyubomirsky (2007) has endeavoured to create a framework of how to create
sustainable happiness through intentional activity, she suggests that circumstances account for only
10% of our happiness and that there is a 40% range of possibility that is open to enhancement towards
flourishing rather than merely being mentally healthy. The researcher will look into this by contrasting
Lyubomirsky s ideas on the body and soul connection with her own experience. In 1949 Campbell
introduced the concept of the hero s journey in his book The hero with a thousand faces which
emerged from his studies of comparative mythologies. He asserted that we think in story and that our
stories have patterns that evolve over time. Our journey through life towards or as an expression of
authenticity spirals and revisits itself over time; Campbell stated that these are in fact expressions of
universal and eternal themes. Events and experiences of our lives reshape our story of what

The Pros And Cons Of The Honor System
Many schools are establishing a thing call an honor system. This honor code is supposed to prevent
cheating on a test, assignments and other academic work. This approach is solely based on the morals
of its students and how admirable they are. Now, this could work on some student, but not all of them
because some people don t care about their own principles; therefore, it wouldn t be as effective as
much as people think. The honorary system is really flawed in most ways, rather than stopping people
from cheating. This honor system doesn t send a strong enough message, it doesn t better them as a
person, and it doesn t stop the kids from cheating.
If a kid decides to cheat on a test or a worksheet it s most likely they ll do it again. Especially if they
don t get caught cause it will excel their cheating habits even more. Giving them aspirations that they
won t get caught and they can get away from not doing any work and the honor code let s them do
that. It makes it easier for them to do this stuff and get away with it cause all they have to do is lie, and
some people are okay with that. Once the system is exploding in this way they ll start to be okay with
it because they ll be nullified their conscience. Instead of using someone moral as a prevention of
cheaters they need to use the no tolerance system. This would have a more ... Show more content on

Taking a Look at Welding
If I lived back in the wild west days, instead of carrying a six gun in my holster, I d carry a soldering

iron! Thats right, it s a soldering iron. The Soldering Iron of Justice . Then everybody would get real
quiet and ashamed, because they had made fun of the soldering iron of justice, and I could probably
hit them up for a free drink (Handy). Soldering is a process that uses low melting point metal alloys to
join metallic surfaces without melting them. Welding is a fabrication process that joins materials by
melting the workpieces and adding filler material to form a pool of molten material that cools to

Cost curbing measures and reductions in health insurance costs for many Americans due to subsidies
help to insure tens of millions by expanding coverage options. This expansion could potentially result
in an overall net decrease of the deficit by driving health care costs down over time.
Obamacare was originally projected to cut the national deficit by over $200 billion during its first 10
years, and by over $1 trillion over the next two decades in March of 2012. Although estimates have
changed, the law s provisions continue to curb healthcare costs. This helps offset the current estimated
$1.207 trillion net cost of ObamaCare s insurance related provisions. (The gross cost of ObamaCare is
$1,707 billion, offset by a projected $500 billion in revenue for 2016 2025.)
The new lowered estimate of $1.207 trillion is, in part, due to a downward trend in spending by
private health insurers in health care and administration. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and
Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) estimate that growth in private health insurance spending per
enrollee over the 2006 2013 period averaged 1.8% per year, compared with an average rate of 5.0%
per year during the 1998 2005

was when he was alive. On the other hand, Jacob s mother expressed masculine traits that are called
Instrumental traits, therefore, she was opposite then Jacobs father, in which she was more task

Summary Of The Novel O Pioneers ! By Willa Cather
Willa Cather is an author who uses similar aspects and events of her life and puts them into her novels.
This approach allows the reader to know what inspired the events happening throughout the novel.
After reading the novel O Pioneers! by Willa Cather, I began to search for ideas leading me deeper
into the meaning of the novel as a whole. O Pioneers! is a novel in which several of the key concepts
and character qualities can be better understood by learning more about the life of Willa Cather.
Aspects of O Pioneers! that involve the life of Willa Cather include where the novel is taking place,
the description of Alexandra s disposition, and the dominance Alexandra exhibits in her family.
Willa Cather decides to have the setting of the novel take place in Hanover, Nebraska. She is very
familiar with Nebraska because after her family moved from Virginia, this is where she grew up as a
young child and attended school (Baughman par. 2). At the start of the novel, Hanover, Nebraska is, A
cluster of low drab buildings huddled on the gray prairie, under a gray sky (Cather 1.1.1). The town is
being given a strong, gloomy, and dark feeling similar to what her childhood must have been like. We
then begin to see glimpses of this appear when we introduce the main character Alexandra and life in
Hanover. Alexandra state s, Three big Bohemians were drinking raw alcohol, tinctured with oil of
cinnamon. This was said to fortify one effectually against the cold, and they smacked

Essay On Sociology Is The Father Of Sociology
Sociology
1. What is the science of sociology?
Sociology is defined as a systematic arrangement of knowledge that indicates operations in
consideration to the general laws. In a general approach, sociology is defined briefly as the study of
how human interact in their daily social life. The word sociology is developed from two main other
words socio and logos . The meaning of socio is society and the meaning of logos is science. That
means sociology is the science used to study human social life. In addition to this sociology is not
concerned with only the social interaction but also the daily social changes.
Different approaches have been developed for the study and examination of sociology but never has
there been an acceptable concept to this study. The reason is that sociology involves a study of human
lives and the behaviors and therefore, it is a very complicated topic to study. Sociology is composed
by various sociological theories which in many cases they contradict each other leading to a lot of
issues about this topic (Horowitz, 2017).
Auguste Comte is considered the father of sociology because he was interested in the study of society
mainly because of the changes that had taken place due to the revolution of France ... Show more

Satire In A Modest Proposal By Jonathan Swift
There s a Black Friday sale on babies this weekend; eat up! Satire can point out societal inadequacy
and ridicule political policies in a way that is humorous in its absurdity while masking its true intent.
In A Modest Proposal, Jonathan Swift uses exaggeration and irony to draw attention to the
meaningless lives of the Irish poor under English rule. Thus, giving his work a wider audience while
also serving as a furtherment of Swift s typical derisiveness. A Modest Proposal comments on the
harm caused by the Declaratory Act of 1720, an act that allowed Great Britain s parliament to legislate
over Ireland with no input from the Irish House of Lords, leaving Ireland in severe economic distress.
Swift contrasts his calm, yet harsh criticism of English politics and the rich upper class with his own
passionate beliefs. Swift s satiric pamphlet was not only effective at the time it was published but also
in modernity; it remains one of the most well known satiric works in literature today. One of the
reasons Swift s writing was so popular was because he wrote in a way people were familiar. A Modest
Proposal was written as a pamphlet with the same title common of pamphlets at the time (Williams
51). Before reading through Swift s proposal the work would seem to be ordinary and tired. Swift
keeps with the familiarity of the people in his style. Swift masks his satire with a style reminiscent of
metaphysical poetry, a style popular in the late 1600s. While A Modest Proposal undoubtedly is not a
poem, it mimics the main themes of metaphysical poetry. This style starts and remains a complex
work through its entirety, relying heavily on the use of paradox and violence. These cannot be
overlooked in Swift s piece; his major plot is killing and eating infants. What separates both
metaphysical poetry and Swift s work from other works is its argumentative stance. Most pamphlets
of the time would simply offer a humble solution while Swift fights not only with the audience but
with himself to embed his main purpose into the audience s brain. When reading metaphysical poetry,
the reader is trained to think thoroughly about what is offered in the piece and moreover, the author s
true intent. In keeping with this style, Swift

By Definition Miracles Do Not Occur Essay
By Definition Miracles Do Not Occur
Even in this modern age, belief in the miraculous is widespread and is a feature of many world
religions, including the Christian faith where miracles have played a significant role.
It is important attempt to define what a miracle is, as this in itself is a source for debate. Today the
term miracle in many different ways and the idea is open to many interpretations.
A miracle can be defined in a number of ways, firstly as an unexpected change for the better. This
centres miracles in people s treatment of each other, not necessarily demanding the idea of a creator
God, although it can be interpreted as being God s action (here a change can be deemed ... Show more

It is with this definition of miracles that the majority of arguments occur, with some claiming them to
be obvious signs of God s reality and active presence within the world, with some such miracles being
incorporated in arguments for religious experience. We see examples of such RSSE in the gospels. For
many Christian s miracles, demonstrate God s care for his creation and show God s willingness to
intervene to change things for the better. Such examples of RSSE are not confined to the times of
Jesus, but have occurred in the fairly recent past especially in the Catholic Church (who undertake a
strict procedure in ascertaining the validity of miracles) e.g. Lourdes, The miraculous recovery of John
Fagen, which lead to the sainthood of John Ogillve etc.
Scholars such as Hume, and scientists such as Dawkins, believe that miracles have natural
explanations and are only seen as miraculous due to ignorance (as science advances forward so faith
retreats). They believe that there are no real miracles but events that can be better explained in
scientific terms (the plagues, walking on water etc) or are simply fabricated.
The German scholar Rudolf Bultmann took a similarly sceptical view of miracles and argued that the
world view of the Bible was unacceptable in a modern, scientific age. Bultmann reasoned that the

Women who have children are also restricted therefore from moving up the social ladder.
Britain is ruled by a capitalist society, where there is a clear divide between those that have; the (ruling
class), and those that don t. The ruling class hold positions of power within many societies, for
example within the: Government, Law, Criminal Justice and Education institutions, all of which have
a major influence in life chances of individuals, through the organisation and functioning of society.
The fact that there is unequal distribution of power makes way for social conflict, as stated by Karl
Marx (1848;1964,1867 1895;1967) cited in Lindsey, L(1990) conflict theory assumes that society is a
stage where the struggles for power are performed,
After the second world war Britain experienced a shortage of labor, through the increase of the service
sector, this meant that the government needed a new source of labor, which was married women and
common wealth immigrants, although this brought about an increase in female employment, married
women were expected to be financially dependent on their husbands, however despite changing
attitudes towards women s employment, there has seen a decline in male bread winner ideologies,

Dworkin Paternalism
How does Dworkin define paternalism, and when does he think it is justified?
In addressing the principle of paternalism, Dworkin notes that there may be more cases in which it
should be justified than what Mill stated. First Dworkin defines paternalism as the interference with a
person s liberty of action justified by reasons referring exclusively to the welfare, good, happiness,
needs, interests or values of the person being coerced , although he later notes that in some cases,
paternalism may also extend to interferences with the liberty of parties whose interests are not in
question . He gives various examples of paternalistic laws and restrictions, such as the laws requiring
motorcyclists to wear safety helmets, regulating the use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He does recognize that most individuals feel they have duties, whether they are religious or not, but
claims that this is a strength of the integrity argument because it allows people to understand better
why religious exemptions should be justified. Thus religious people are giving ways to better fulfill
their duties and enjoy the good of integrity than non religious people, who might feel that they need
exemptions as well to protect and enjoy theirs. Another point against religious exemptions as they are
advocated by Bou Habib is that we are meant to be equal before the law, so to exempt certain
categories of people to obey the law is undermining the concept of justice and equality. In addition,
most of the time laws are justified, meaning that exemptions are not. For example, in many countries,
including some in which Islam is the predominant religion, such as Chad, it is forbidden to hide one s
face in public areas for security reasons. So religious exemptions allowing the wearing of burkas
would undermine the efforts made to securitize societies, as it enables fugitives to hide easily amongst
many other things.
If there are cases that would justify religious exemptions and there are some , then maybe they should
not be prohibited by the law at all. Bou Habib s argument makes sense, but I maintain that religious
exemptions would have negative consequences as it would leads to

The Theory Of The Entrepreneurship Process
The entrepreneurship process is continually changing due to the aspect of globalisation. It is in this
regard that the definitive term of the entrepreneurship process is becoming hard to derive. Various
individuals are strategically coming up with innovative ideas that have effects on the economies of
various countries. Entrepreneurs are known to create various types of ventures that range from
lifestyle organisations to rapid growth corporations (Morris, Schindehutte Allen, 2005, p. 730). The
ventures can either be regarded to be a profit making venture, or a business that is more focused on
promoting certain values in the society. The basis in which an individual takes up the entrepreneurship
task depends on the motivation of the individual and the motivation that they have. There are various
theories that try to define the twenty first century entrepreneur, and these models have helped
significantly in identifying the individuals who formed the basis of this research. Many economists
describe the concept of entrepreneurship differently; additionally, the core characteristics of an
entrepreneur vary with different definitions. Kuratko (2008, p. 20) defines an entrepreneur as an
individual who comes up with products, in the form of goods and services, that are in demand by the
public but are not being supplied. The traditional ways of defining an entrepreneur is changing with
the different ventures that people are undertaking in the society today. The rise in social

Portrayal Of African Americans During The Film The...
There are many times when people say that everyone has some sort of prejudice towards an ethnic
group. A perfect example is that of the portrayal of races through stereotypes in American films that
are being made and sold to the public. Since the beginning of the silent black and white movies there
have been stereotypes that misrepresent ethnic groups, such as the negative portrayal of African
Americans in minstrel shows. Although these extreme negative racist portrayals have ended, the film
industry still insists on adding stereotypes that negatively portrays ethnic minorities, such as Asian
Americans, Hispanics Americans, and African Americans. In the movie industry, no minority has been
exempt from being negatively portrayed in films, such as the Asian Americans. During the first half of
the 1900 s, Asian Americans were victimized through racist cartoons and movies. Further negative
representation of Asian Americans gained momentum during World War 2, particularly towards
Japanese Americans. Further, in today s modern society, movies often depict Asian Americans through
stereotypes, such as Asian American women being portrayed as sexual objects, the smart Asian, and
the Wise old man who possess infinite wisdom. Asian American women have been continuously being
used as sexual objects on the big screen. Asian and Asian American women in the movies play the role
of being extremely submissive to their male counterparts. This could be noted in many films, such as

Comparing Gospels And Pride And Prejudice
The Gospels, by unknown authors, and Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen, are two very different
works. The former is a text crafted in order to spread Christianity around the world, while the latter is
a novel for noble women to read in their leisure during the Regency Era. The two texts have some
similarities, however, and the most poignant of these involve gossip and rumor. Rumor is crucial to
the characters in the Gospels and in Pride and Prejudice because it becomes their news, their fact, their
social status, their knowledge, and their power. Without it, the characters would have no connection to
each other or the world around them. Peoples lives revolve around the gossip they hear and read in the
two works, and the way this gossip ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fact that something happened is not important unless it is recognized and glorified as such. For
example, Jesus acknowledges the importance of doing acts in front of others and therefore spreading
the rumor of those deeds when he says, I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that
they may believe you sent me (John 11, 42). This shows the need to recognize something happening
before it can become important. In Pride and Prejudice, something is not acknowledged as an event
unless it is talked about in front of others. For example, Mrs. Bennet had to be sure to tell everyone
that Bingley danced with Jane the most at the ball, or else it would not have been recognized as an
event (p. 8). Also, the ladies always have to go Longbourn after a ball to discuss the evening s
happenings with the Lucases so they can gossip about the events of the evening, thus establishing
them as important (p. 14). Not only is recognizing something as an event essential in the works, but
rumor can become the event itself. In the Gospels, word, or rumor, becomes God. John opens with the
line, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (John 1, 2).
This shows that as people spread the word, it not only informs people about God, but it becomes God

Drug Patents Essay
Why do consumers purchase specific drugs for various ailments, sicknesses or diseases they might

public? Why is it that most of us can easily name specific drugs that fit the many ailments of today s
society? On the surface the answer might be as simple as good TV advertising or radio commercials or
even internet adds. The truth of matter is the major pharmaceutical manufacturers own the patents on
these drugs and this gives them all of the marketing budget and muscle they need to promote the drug
and control the pricing. The incentives for larger pharmaceutical companies are very enticing and as a

If multiple drugs are created for the treatment of similar symptoms or illnesses, they can each receive
a patent providing they are not identical in formulation and don t have the same key active ingredient
in them. A patent can only last for 20 years and as a result, new drug companies could potentially take
over the drug formulation. Given the fact that drug pharmaceuticals are always advancing, their will
most likely always be new drugs that are even better (Lehman 4).
The main purpose of creating the drug patent is to achieve market exclusivity for the product created.
With only select brands of the same drug available it is much easier to market and sell the product.
Companies are able to determine their price which allows them to achieve maximum profit. The
importance of making a large profit in the pharmaceutical industry is that drug testing and clinical
trials are extremely expensive. In many cases the profit gained by selling expensive products will be
allocated for future endeavors such as the creation of a future drug, or of the improvement of the drug
already on the market. New research is done every day to find the new miracle drug that will fix
whatever illness is at hand (FDA). If the selling price exceeds the production cost, the pharmaceutical
companies will continue to receive a large profit. Often the company will choose to continue their
research, making advancements to the existing drug, that way it can

North Sentinel Island Case Study
C. North Sentinel Island has an interesting geographical background and some numerous unusual
demographics. North Sentinel Island is located in the Bay of Bengal, and because of that, the
geography helped shaped their initial isolationist policies. Due to their location in the Bay of Bengal,
the island helps strengthen their isolationist principles. i. Since it is an island, the shore of North
Sentinel Island is covered and surrounded by coral reefs. ii. According to Adam Goodheart who
obtained a mass communication degree from the University of Maryland, his article published in The
American Scholar states that Because it is surrounded by the coral reefs, the place does not have
natural harbors for exports or imports, which in led to further isolation from the world (Goodheart).

However, there is more variability in wind speeds on the island due to the sea breeze, which also
causes more precipitation to occur on the island. iii. Additionally, the land is covered in a dense jungle
environment and habitat, although the shoreline has beaches. c. Sadly, there are no significant physical
features on North Sentinel Island due to their isolation. d. The economy of North Sentinel Island is
basically nonexistent. i. Due to their extreme isolation from the rest of the world, trading with other
countries is unavailable. ii. The North Sentinel society relies on traditional roles of hunting and
gathering, which would indicate that the Sentinelese people do not have current and updated
technology in comparison to the rest of the world. iii. Due to inability to land and get on the island,
people from around the world have no information on what type of goods the Sentinelese people have
and what type of plants and animals are on the island. North Sentinel Island has some significant
demographics in regards to the island as a whole. The population of the North Sentinel Island is
unknown to experts because of the strict isolation of the

Motif Of Night In Macbeth
In Shakespeare s Macbeth, the motif of night is aggressive like the murders they plot and commit.
Night dominates day throughout the play since they commit murders which disrupt the natural order
of the world. Macbeth plays God by taking someone else s life and therefore they challenge the
Elizabethan order of the world. Acts of chaos, like earthquakes and supernatural events, break loose.
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth think the night will cover their treacherous deeds. At first, the idea of
murdering Duncan frightens Macbeth, but after he kills the two guards, he begins to lose his humanity.
In the beginning, Lady Macbeth feels no remorse for the deaths they are responsible for but as the play
progresses, Lady Macbeth starts to feel remorse for her and her husband s actions. Although Lady
Macbeth and Macbeth hope the night will conceal their sins, instead it illuminates their actions and
worsens their guilt. Their actions can never fully hide since they disrupt the natural order of the world
and cause chaos.
Lady Macbeth and Macbeth call on the night before Duncan s and Banquo s murders and hope that its
darkness will be enough to cover the evil deeds they are about to commit. Before Duncan s murder,
Lady Macbeth asks the witches to thicken her blood so she does not feel remorse or guilt. She also
wishes for a dark and foggy night, when she says: Come, thick night, and pall thee in the dunnest
smoke of hell, that my keen knife see not the wound it makes (1.5.57 59). She

Sample Management Plan For Medical Equipment
2.5Maintenance Management Plan
Dyro (2004) indicates that periodic medical device management is a fundamental element of
equipment management. Arno, Dowling and Schuerger (2016) report that high reliability and low
maintenance costs are common targets for all maintenance programs. A carefully designed
preventative maintenance can reduce maintenance costs through the prevention of degradation failure
through preemptive intervention. Corrective maintenance is required when a failure occurs and it is
often more expensive than a preventative maintenance. Preventative maintenance is implemented to
decrease the probability of some particular expected failures and therefore decrease the overall
maintenance cost.
2.5.1 Preventive Maintenance
Medical equipment is usually expensive and require high mechanical precision, especially for the
equipment that produce devices that install in patients body. Fennigkoh and Smith (1989) indicate that
medical equipment needs constant maintenance to make sure that it can perform required high
requirements, which makes preventive maintenance very important in medical industry. Another
benefit of implementing preventive maintenance is that it also decreases expensive corrective
maintenance costs.
2.5.2 Preventive Maintenance Regulations for Medical Equipment
According to Centers for Medicare medicaid Services (CMS) Preventive Maintenance Regulations
(2011) Medical Equipment (e.g., laboratory equipment, IV infusion equipment, biomedical

  • 2. Managing Human Relations Definition of Human Relations In our business world today, people who enter the workforce are discovering that interpersonal skills represent a very important category of basic skills valued by employers. These skills can also help us to cope with a wide range of work life issues and conflicts that surface in our lives. Besides that, these skills will also help us in areas such as interviewing to get a job in the future, improving our personal communication skills and building and thus maintaining productive relationships with others in the workplace. These skills lead to a term which is known as human relations. Human relations is defined in its broadest sense which covers all types of interactions among people. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the reasons is because organizations are advancing more to the age of Information Technology (IT) and many things in the world nowadays are done by machines and requires a minimal amount of manpower. This will lessen the job opportunities and even those who have worked in the particular workplace will be forced to resign or quit their respective jobs. As an effect of this, many organizations will shortlist those workers who are performing at a full pace and achieving more goals than others to remain in the company and then hand in a resignation letter for those workers who are underperforming or those who failed to achieve their goals. In order to tackle this issue, many companies nowadays spend most of their time to train their employees so that they could be better workers and would help the company to achieve more success in the future. When the company trains their employees, the employees are expected to understand on what is required of them during the day at work. Employees are also required to continuously build relationships with their employers or managers of the company and also learn to accept the other employees which are working together with them. In addition, another major reason on why human relations is important in workplaces is because most companies are growing bigger and bigger compared to few years back. Many large companies ... Baseball players are now making millions of dollars to do something that they love and enjoy. It s not their fault the money they can receive has reached the million mark, even for some of the less talent of ball players. This has happened to all sports, but especially to the American pastime. Baseball is more of a business than just a game and many things have made it this way. A lot of reasons have contributed to the rising salaries there is today and it will not stop there. The amount of baseball contracts will keep rising each year. Many people believed he was crazy to spend this much money on one player, but Tom Schieffer stated that Hicks has a good understanding of the economics of sports (Rangers). Alex Rodriguez is just one example of this growing business and many other ball players are getting paid an unreasonable amount. Most teams to take care of this have raised ticket prices. Two thirds of the thirty teams in MLB have raised the cost of a ticket for the 2001 season. Baseball tickets are the cheapest among professional sports, but they re catching up(MLB). The average ticket in 2000 was 16.65 dollars, according to Team Marketing Report(MLB). Now, it costs a fan twenty dollars for a bleacher seat at Wrigley Field , 31 dollars to watch the Yankees from the cheap seats, and forty to sit in the grandstands at Fenway Park(MLB). The rise in ticket prices has contributed to the rise in the cost to have a baseball player play for your team. Many teams are coming up with other ways to be able to pay these high priced athletes without leaving out the normal fan. Several teams have increased premium seating and are offering special packages for people and corporate entertainers, who have money to spend. For example, the L.A. Dodgers have not raised ticket prices but offer a Dugout Club seat behind home plate for 225 dollars(MLB). More ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The reason being, World War II changed the possibilities of animation. Before the war, animation was only used for comedy and entertainment. Animation were these shorts played with color, music, and storytelling both hand drawn and computer animated. The attack on Pearl Harbor was a turning point in this form of entertainment because never before has the movie industry and nation been so aligned with interests and goals. Even though physical activity can reduce recurrent stroke, stroke survivors are not engaging in physical activity at optimal levels to protect against recurrent stroke. In their research, Boysen Krarup, pg. 148, (2013) found that following a stroke, sequelae such as hemiparesis and ataxia may limit the trainability of stroke patients and lead to decreasing levels of physical activity and physical performance. Historically, motivation to exercise has also been cited in the literature as a deterrent and a facilitator to exercise among the stroke survivor population (Damush, Plue, Bakas, Schmid Williams, 2007). According to a study conducted by researchers Mohan, Wolfe, Rudd, Heuschmann, Kolominsky Rabas, Grieve, (2011) patients who survive an initial stroke are at a significantly increased risk for future strokes compared with the general population; a systematic review and meta analysis showed that the cumulative risk of stroke recurrence was 3.1% at 30 days, 11.1% at 1 year, 26.4% at 5 years and 39.2% at 10 years. • 8. An Description Of An Exact Dissipation Model For Arbitrary Referee Report: Manuscript ID# OL: 280139 PAPER DESCRIPTION In the paper titled An exact dissipation model for arbitrary photonic Fock state transport in waveguide QED systems , Chen et al. have presented a dissipation model to study the Fock and coherent state transport through waveguide QED (wQED) systems. As the main novelty of their work, they have modelled the environment as a 3D scattering channel (described in a real space picture similar to the waveguide modelling) and it has been shown that a reduced Hamiltonian can be obtained for arbitrary photon number Fock state which can describe the photonic transport with a restricted eigenstate. To illustrate, one , two , N photon and coherent state examples are presented. Finally, two simple geometries of the scattering channel are considered namely the uniform medium and a slab waveguide. Authors have also very briefly pointed out the applicability of their model in cavity QED. COMMENTS AND DECISION Overall the paper has interesting findings and is systematically presented. In particular, the modelling of the environment as a non excitable 3D scattering channel, is the key attraction in this work. Moreover, the authors have made claims which seems not to be exaggerated. However, there are some points in this work which can be ambiguous to the interested reader. Therefore, I can recommend publication of this paper in the Optics Letters, provided the authors performs the following revisions: QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. The Battle Within Bowe Bergdahl The Battle Within Bowe Bergdahl The second season of the podcast series, Serial, hosted by Sarah Koenig, an American Journalist, focuses on a soldier named Bowe Bergdahl, who, at the age of 19, enlisted into the Coast Guard. Bowe Bergdahl only lasted a couple weeks in training due to the fact that he was diagnosed with situational anxiety. Without proper guidance, the Army did not look into Bergdahl s diagnosis. Therefore, Bowe Bergdahl was able to re enlist into the army. Because the Army neglected to check Bowe s medical history, Bowe caused a Dustwun in the middle of Afghanistan in 2009, and was later captured by the Taliban. As a result, the Taliban established a trade with the United States. In exchange for Bowe Bergdahl, the Taliban wanted five of their commanders who were held by the United States in Guantanamo Bay. However, the Army could have prevented Bowe from being held captive, if the military had checked Bowe s records. Therefore, the army was at fault for allowing a mentally ill soldier to re enlist in the army. According to a study constructed by JAMA Psychiatry, a medical journal published by the American Medical Association, explained that one out of five soldiers, who have enlisted into the military have suffered from a mental disorder (Hastings). With this statistic, there are doubts regarding the military s assessments of the enlisted. In May 1992, Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch) arrives in a remote area just north of the Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska and sets up a campsite in an abandoned bus. Not long after arriving, however, he starts feeling corrupted by modern civilization and decides to leave. Later, McCandless is forced to switch his traveling method back to hitchhiking after he is beaten by the railroad police. In December 1991, McCandless arrives at Slab City in the Imperial Valley region of California, and encounters Jan and Rainey again. There, he meets Tracy Tatro (Kristen Stewart), a teenage girl who shows interest in McCandless, but he rejects her because she is underage. After the holidays, McCandless decides to continue heading for Alaska, much to everyone s sadness. While camping near Salton City, California, McCandless encounters Ron Franz (Hal Holbrook), a retired man who recounts the story of the loss of his family in a car accident while he was serving in the United States Army. • 12. Candide By Voltaire And The Song `` Pursuit Of Happiness... Throughout history people have been looking for something that made life special, spectacular, or one of a kind. Today, this search is known to the world as the pursuit of happiness . The phrase use was heightened during the enlightenment period and lingered for long after. This impact of its use did not only impact the way life was looked at but also impacted the arts during that time and for the future. Two pieces that show this evidence is the novel Candide by Voltaire and the song Pursuit of Happiness by Kid Cudi. Both of these works, even though they were published more than two centuries apart, carry the theme of the pursuit of happiness. These pieces are evidence of the unchanging pursuit that mankind goes through. The beginning of the pursuit is where both of the stories start off. Where the characters get a taste of what they believe to be pure happiness . In Kid Cudi s song, the narrator finds what they believe to be happiness in drugs and alcohol. Crush a bit, little bit, roll it up take a hit... I don t care hand on the wheel, drivin drunk I m doin my thing. In the mid 1580s, it was clear that a direct military confrontation between England and Spain was unavoidable in the near future. Word reached London that the Spanish king, Philip II, had started to assemble together an enormous fleet that would sail to the Netherlands, and join forces with a waiting Spanish army led by the duke of Parma. After joining forces, this fleet would proceed to invade and probably conquer the now protestant England. The always conservative queen reluctantly had authorized sufficient funds to maintain a fleet of maneuverable, well armed fighting ships, to which other ships from the merchant fleet would be added. In July 1588, the Invincible Armada reached the English water and the queen s ships. In one of the most famous naval encounters of history, the queen s ships defeated the enemy fleet, which then in an attempt to return to Spain, was all but destroyed by terrible storms. Although final exit is not the only way out there are other organizations that will do the same thing. Among them Dignitas, Compassion and choices, dignity in dying, exit, and the world federation of right to die societies are to name some. What all these organizations have in common is there want to allow others a death with dignity. They give those who are suffering a way out, when death is far better choice than living. Dignitas Began in 1998 in Forch Switzerland. They open their doors with the statement to live with dignity to die with dignity (Dignitas). The researcher will look into this by contrasting Lyubomirsky s ideas on the body and soul connection with her own experience. In 1949 Campbell introduced the concept of the hero s journey in his book The hero with a thousand faces which emerged from his studies of comparative mythologies. He asserted that we think in story and that our stories have patterns that evolve over time. This honor code is supposed to prevent cheating on a test, assignments and other academic work. This approach is solely based on the morals of its students and how admirable they are. Now, this could work on some student, but not all of them because some people don t care about their own principles; therefore, it wouldn t be as effective as much as people think. The honorary system is really flawed in most ways, rather than stopping people from cheating. This honor system doesn t send a strong enough message, it doesn t better them as a person, and it doesn t stop the kids from cheating. If a kid decides to cheat on a test or a worksheet it s most likely they ll do it again. Especially if they don t get caught cause it will excel their cheating habits even more. Giving them aspirations that they won t get caught and they can get away from not doing any work and the honor code let s them do that. It makes it easier for them to do this stuff and get away with it cause all they have to do is lie, and some people are okay with that. Cost curbing measures and reductions in health insurance costs for many Americans due to subsidies help to insure tens of millions by expanding coverage options. This expansion could potentially result in an overall net decrease of the deficit by driving health care costs down over time. Obamacare was originally projected to cut the national deficit by over $200 billion during its first 10 years, and by over $1 trillion over the next two decades in March of 2012. Although estimates have changed, the law s provisions continue to curb healthcare costs. This helps offset the current estimated $1.207 trillion net cost of ObamaCare s insurance related provisions. O Pioneers! is a novel in which several of the key concepts and character qualities can be better understood by learning more about the life of Willa Cather. Aspects of O Pioneers! that involve the life of Willa Cather include where the novel is taking place, the description of Alexandra s disposition, and the dominance Alexandra exhibits in her family. Willa Cather decides to have the setting of the novel take place in Hanover, Nebraska. She is very familiar with Nebraska because after her family moved from Virginia, this is where she grew up as a young child and attended school (Baughman par. 2). At the start of the novel, Hanover, Nebraska is, A cluster of low drab buildings huddled on the gray prairie, under a gray sky (Cather 1.1.1). • 23. Essay On Sociology Is The Father Of Sociology Sociology 1. What is the science of sociology? Sociology is defined as a systematic arrangement of knowledge that indicates operations in consideration to the general laws. In a general approach, sociology is defined briefly as the study of how human interact in their daily social life. The word sociology is developed from two main other words socio and logos . The meaning of socio is society and the meaning of logos is science. That means sociology is the science used to study human social life. In addition to this sociology is not concerned with only the social interaction but also the daily social changes. Different approaches have been developed for the study and examination of sociology but never has there been an acceptable concept to this study. The reason is that sociology involves a study of human lives and the behaviors and therefore, it is a very complicated topic to study. Sociology is composed by various sociological theories which in many cases they contradict each other leading to a lot of issues about this topic (Horowitz, 2017). • 24. Satire In A Modest Proposal By Jonathan Swift There s a Black Friday sale on babies this weekend; eat up! Satire can point out societal inadequacy and ridicule political policies in a way that is humorous in its absurdity while masking its true intent. In A Modest Proposal, Jonathan Swift uses exaggeration and irony to draw attention to the meaningless lives of the Irish poor under English rule. Thus, giving his work a wider audience while also serving as a furtherment of Swift s typical derisiveness. A Modest Proposal comments on the harm caused by the Declaratory Act of 1720, an act that allowed Great Britain s parliament to legislate over Ireland with no input from the Irish House of Lords, leaving Ireland in severe economic distress. Swift contrasts his calm, yet harsh criticism of English politics and the rich upper class with his own passionate beliefs. Swift s satiric pamphlet was not only effective at the time it was published but also in modernity; it remains one of the most well known satiric works in literature today. One of the reasons Swift s writing was so popular was because he wrote in a way people were familiar. A Modest Proposal was written as a pamphlet with the same title common of pamphlets at the time (Williams 51). Before reading through Swift s proposal the work would seem to be ordinary and tired. Swift keeps with the familiarity of the people in his style. Swift masks his satire with a style reminiscent of metaphysical poetry, a style popular in the late 1600s. While A Modest Proposal undoubtedly is not a poem, it mimics the main themes of metaphysical poetry. This style starts and remains a complex work through its entirety, relying heavily on the use of paradox and violence. These cannot be overlooked in Swift s piece; his major plot is killing and eating infants. What separates both metaphysical poetry and Swift s work from other works is its argumentative stance. Most pamphlets of the time would simply offer a humble solution while Swift fights not only with the audience but with himself to embed his main purpose into the audience s brain. When reading metaphysical poetry, the reader is trained to think thoroughly about what is offered in the piece and moreover, the author s true intent. In keeping with this style, Swift ... It is with this definition of miracles that the majority of arguments occur, with some claiming them to be obvious signs of God s reality and active presence within the world, with some such miracles being incorporated in arguments for religious experience. We see examples of such RSSE in the gospels. For many Christian s miracles, demonstrate God s care for his creation and show God s willingness to intervene to change things for the better. Such examples of RSSE are not confined to the times of Jesus, but have occurred in the fairly recent past especially in the Catholic Church (who undertake a strict procedure in ascertaining the validity of miracles) e.g. Lourdes, The miraculous recovery of John Fagen, which lead to the sainthood of John Ogillve etc. Scholars such as Hume, and scientists such as Dawkins, believe that miracles have natural explanations and are only seen as miraculous due to ignorance (as science advances forward so faith retreats). They believe that there are no real miracles but events that can be better explained in scientific terms (the plagues, walking on water etc) or are simply fabricated. The German scholar Rudolf Bultmann took a similarly sceptical view of miracles and argued that the world view of the Bible was unacceptable in a modern, scientific age. Bultmann reasoned that the ... Thus religious people are giving ways to better fulfill their duties and enjoy the good of integrity than non religious people, who might feel that they need exemptions as well to protect and enjoy theirs. Another point against religious exemptions as they are advocated by Bou Habib is that we are meant to be equal before the law, so to exempt certain categories of people to obey the law is undermining the concept of justice and equality. In addition, most of the time laws are justified, meaning that exemptions are not. For example, in many countries, including some in which Islam is the predominant religion, such as Chad, it is forbidden to hide one s face in public areas for security reasons. So religious exemptions allowing the wearing of burkas would undermine the efforts made to securitize societies, as it enables fugitives to hide easily amongst many other things. A perfect example is that of the portrayal of races through stereotypes in American films that are being made and sold to the public. Since the beginning of the silent black and white movies there have been stereotypes that misrepresent ethnic groups, such as the negative portrayal of African Americans in minstrel shows. The two texts have some similarities, however, and the most poignant of these involve gossip and rumor. Rumor is crucial to the characters in the Gospels and in Pride and Prejudice because it becomes their news, their fact, their social status, their knowledge, and their power. For example, Jesus acknowledges the importance of doing acts in front of others and therefore spreading the rumor of those deeds when he says, I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe you sent me (John 11, 42). This shows the need to recognize something happening before it can become important. In Pride and Prejudice, something is not acknowledged as an event unless it is talked about in front of others. For example, Mrs. Bennet had to be sure to tell everyone that Bingley danced with Jane the most at the ball, or else it would not have been recognized as an event (p. 8). Also, the ladies always have to go Longbourn after a ball to discuss the evening s happenings with the Lucases so they can gossip about the events of the evening, thus establishing them as important (p. 14). Not only is recognizing something as an event essential in the works, but rumor can become the event itself. In the Gospels, word, or rumor, becomes God. Given the fact that drug pharmaceuticals are always advancing, their will most likely always be new drugs that are even better (Lehman 4).
