Upton Sinclair The Jungle Analysis
Good morning Mary, Since the industrial revolution, our country has made tremendous strides to
ensure Equal Employment Opportunity and safe work environments. Horror stories of unfair
treatment and unsafe work environments are portrayed in Upton Sinclair s The Jungle . Factory
working conditions are portrayed as men, women, and child work long hours in unsafe conditions
with no worker rights whatsoever (Sinclair, 2011). As workers died in the factory or were injured,
another warm body was placed in their position (Sinclair, 2011). Wages were almost nonexistent
(Sinclair, 2011). It is because of unsafe working environments, low wages, long hours, etc. that the
government decided to intervene and create various regulatory groups. As we

Copyright In The Music Industry
Since the recording of music began, the music industry has been very dependent on record labels to
help artist reach mainstream success. The role of a record label is to assist an artist/musician in
gaining of the attention consumers. Along with that these labels also aid performers in marketing
their work through radio, magazines, newspapers, and television, but also involves the marketing of
music recordings and live performances. The majority of the time they would send artist s work to
publishers that would work on trademarks, production, manufacture, distribution, marketing,
promotion, but most importantly is the enforcement of copyrightlaws for written and sound
recordings. With that being said record labels are the ones who set the terms... Show more content on

For a jazz musician copyrights usually, applies to tunes and notes that are already written down
and not solos. Copyright laws consider most early jazz songs as derivative works. What that means
is that copyright protection and rights are based not on what the jazz musician has added, but what
he has used. Under the Copyright Act, the owner of the composition copyright has the exclusive
right to prepare derivative works based upon the copyrighted work. Categorizing jazz interpolations
as derivative works have practical consequences that do not favor the jazz musician. As an initial
matter, there is the issue of how jazz musicians must go about obtaining the rights even to record
the song. The Act creates a compulsory licensing scheme for copyrighted compositions, which
allows players to use any musical composition without having to negotiate with the copyright owner
for permission, so long as the musical work has been licensed previously to someone else for
mechanical reproduction and the musician pays a statutory royalty. Usually, all they needed was a
mechanical license to perform the works that were covered. The license would allow them to
automatically get permission from the artist from the artist and the publishers in return
guaranteeing them royalties from the cover. Musicians have more immediate access to previous
artistic works than artists in other mediums seeking to use prior works. The compulsory licensing
scheme for musical derivative works thus alleviates some of the transaction costs of bargaining. The
problem is that obtaining a compulsory license does not protect the original musical contributions
added in the subsequent artist s rendition. That is, compulsory licensees convey only the right to
record and distribute the underlying work. A separate copyright does not automatically attach
another form of the material to that copyright. If a musician wants to protect his pieces, he

How Does Beer Affect Society
Beer
a.Despite the negative connotations that come with the drink today, beer has actually played a
huge role in shaping societies. One example of this takes place with the Sumerian people of
Mesopotamia. Beer drinkers were widely depicted as drinking with a straw, this became a symbol
of hospitality and friendship, the tradition of clinking glasses when sharing alcohol also can be
traced to beer. Another subtle, yet important way that beer contributed to society is that it helped
eliminate the nomadic hunter gathering lifestyle from before.
b.Beer also helped influence the history of some societies. The constant thirst for beer led to the
creation of mash tubs made specifically for creating beer; this in turn allowed people to become
more creative. By adding things such as berries, honey, spices and herbs to the tubs, the beer
altered in taste and thus, became a drink used for different occasions. Egyptian records also refer to
beer as the beautiful and good and the heavenly . Beer was also used in religious ceremonies and
bappir or beer bread, was created and used for food shortages. ... Show more content on

The origin of Coca Cola was based on a lot of trial and error. It had first started off as soda water
and functioned medicinally. It apparently had the ability to prevent/cure putrid fevers dysentery.
As the drink evolved so did the function as well. The addition of coca leaves and kola nuts made
the drink more invigorating due to its caffeine. Now its importance and second function came in
July 1. 1886. That date marks the start of Prohibition, the drink served as an alternative to
alcoholic drinks. Fast forward to 1938 after the changes in its medicinal function, distribution,

DACA Damnation
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival program (DACA) has helped stimulate the United
States financially; by canceling it the Trump Administration has doomed our economy. Lawmakers
have quite a task ahead of them as they try to traverse the tumultuous territory that is the DACA
cancelation. However, one of the largest, if not the largest, problems that this move has created is
the threat it poses to the nation s economy. Bombastically, the Trump Administration made a move
that seemed to be supported by its followers. Yet, further analysis of the cancelation seems to
greatly cripple the United States, estimating that the nation stands to lose $215 billion if the former
DACA recipients are deported.

Psychosexual Stages And Societal Structure
Psychosexual Stages and Societal Structure
Nathanael D. Evans
Montana State University Billings Abstract
This paper assumes that Sigmund Freud s theory of psychosexual stages in childhood
development is accurate. Given the information we have on Freud s idea of fixations, and their
causes, I will explore how societal structure would need to shift towards an acute focus on
childhood in order to eliminate as much abnormality as possible from the adulthood of all
individuals that make up a society. I will also speculate on ideas for streamlining childhood
development, by treating it as an assembly line process. My points will be highly figurative, as the
implementation of the ideas contained herein would not be possible without removing rights from
the populace. However, we must assume, in the spirit of this exercise, that implementation can
occur, and that the theories being examined are accurate in all cases of abnormality. Psychosexual
Stages and Societal Structure
If we are to assume that the earliest experiences of an individual influence their later personality
traits, then it should be assumed that the structure of our society should revolve around a universal
set of guidelines for child rearing, so as to avoid abnormality in the individual in later life. On the
larger scale, if all individuals are raised in identical fashion, societal structure would be uniform.
Sigmund Freud referred to the stages of childhood development as psychosexual stages. Freud

Washington Organized An Effective Approach Of Gradualism...
Washington organized an effective approach of gradualism among blacks but was disrupted by
militant leaders like W.E.B. Dubois. After reconstruction, the hopes for full citizenship rights were
broken when the government renewed white supremacist control to the South. The government
adopted a laissez faire policy, and the Jim Crow laws brought social, occupation, and educational
discrimination to the American Negro. In 1896, the Supreme Court s decision in Plessy v.
Ferguson strengthened the segregation of public facilities in the South. Some leaders supported
violence, some urged a return to Africa, and most encouraged peaceful means to change the
conditions. Some supported a fight for civil rights, especially the right to vote and others wanted
blacks to become skilled workers. These two approaches are called the economic strategy and the
political strategy. Washington supported the gradualist economic strategy. He wanted whites to
agree to black progress in agriculture, education, and economics. He believed that African
Americans should be able to have some jobs and get some education but did not believe complete
equality was a practical goal. African Americans should work hard for a job, not have it handed to
them. Agriculture was one of the most important aspects to his idea of racial uplift. He supported
education in farming and industrial skills, crafts, and development of enterprise, patience, and
thrift. He believed they would receive respect from whites and gain

Miss Brill Isolation
The story Miss Brill was written by Katherine Mansfield in 1920. The story is about a lonely,
elderly woman making her weekly visit to the park where she spends her Sunday afternoons. She
enjoys hearing the sound of a band playing and the soothing atmosphere surrounding her, but most
importantly she enjoys engaging in the lives of other people through observing and listening. The
story focuses on Miss Brill s isolation of herself into the illusion of her own mind, an internal
conflict which is made worse by her loneliness. In the end, when Miss Brill is insulted by a couple
who questions her presence in the park, she becomes dynamic, demonstrating the story s theme that
loneliness should not allow us to isolate ourselves into the fantasies... Show more content on

The young man mocks Miss Brill as a foolish elderly woman in his conversation with his
girlfriend. Fully aware that Miss Brill overhears their conversation, the young man continues to
question her presence in the park. Why does she come here at all who wants her? Why doesn t
she keep her silly old mug at home? (Mansfield 585) The young couple s conversation, instead
fitting in with Miss Brill s conception of the situation as a stage play, he makes her realize that
her presence in the park is not wanted. When their feelings are revealed, her fantasy abruptly
comes to an end. This dynamically changes Miss Brill by discovering her part in the play, and
that she finds is now a tragedy and not a romance. Even though Miss Brill is able to deceive
herself into confronting the truth of her loneliness by reconstructing her thoughts into
perceptions that are less overwhelming to her, she sees herself for who she is truly and how the
crowd surrounding her perceives her. Regardless of how she portrayed herself in her fantasy,
Miss Brill is forced to accept the reality of her loneliness and lack of companionship. Knowing
fully well she is no longer desired to the world, Miss Brill changes her weekly routine this

Examples Of Stereotypes In Friday Night Lights
The stadium lights blind everyone. Crowds of people of all color cheering as the Pepettes stand at
the bottom of the bleachers. They shout enthusiastic cheers with bright smiles as the Permian

H.G Bissinger s Friday Night Lightsis a nonfiction novel about a small high school footballteam in
Odessa, Texas. It was focused during the year of 1988; Permian High Schoolwas desegregated a few
years earlier. Odessa came together to support the football team every week no matter what.

Before the time of integration, Odessa was split into two. There was a white and a minority
community which similar to the Berlin Wall had railroad tracks that inevitably ran through the
heart of town (Bissinger, 91). The famous phrase from the wrong side of the railroad tracks
describes the minority community. The black population lived in poverty, while the write
population enjoyed their riches. However, once desegregation came into Odessa, the minorities
that could afford it, moved into the rich neighborhoods and soon everything was integrated. It,
nonetheless, was not perfect, racism still ran deep within their roots, but it was progress. In the
beginning of the 1988 football season, Boobie Miles suffered from a severe ACL injury, which
forced him to quit playing this season. As a result, his assistant coach automatically thinks
poorly of Boobie, believing he is a quitter because he is no longer a star. He then compares
Boobie to a lame horse, who needs to be shot because he can no longer perform (Bissinger, 284).
This causes a lot of problems for Boobie but luckily his uncle, LV, is there to support him.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund
Animal Abuse Murder and abuse cases never fail to startle society. Moral codes are flouted with
unmatched rigorousness by these indubitable egregious crimes. Sufferers in these cases are often
people. Nonetheless, these callous obscenities should not be seen as less important when animals
are the victims. Animals undergo horrendous abuse due to barbaric individuals, greed, and
unnecessary lab testing. Animals are beaten and abused on a daily basis due to barbaric
individuals. Whether it be from harmful intentions or pure negligence most cases go unreported.
Deliberate cruelty may involve beating, shooting, stabbing animals, or setting them on fire.
Neglect is not giving a necessary food, water, shelter, or vet care (Human Society). The lack of
attention and care for these animals can often lead to severe, and sometimes irrevocable damage.
The Animal Legal Defense Fund, ALDF for short, website tells of one story where neighbors of a
farm complained to the local humane society, that the Colliers were neglecting many animals on
their farm, including dogs and horses. When they went to their property to investigate, they
discovered dogs and horses in several states of neglect and starvation and seized them out of
concern for their immediate health (ALDF). Sadly, however, it can become much worse for
animals. Owners will sometimes purposefully abuse their animals. Unfortunately, occurrences like
these are hardly uncommon. One such example, from the RSPCA of England, the Royal

Essay on Modern and Post-Modernism Architecture
There is often some confusion when people start talking about the post modernism and modernism
in architecture in terms of their philosophical terminology differences. Modern architecture is
known for its minimalism (Linder, 2004); buildings were functional and economical rather than
comfortable and beautifully decorated. The post modernismarchitecture, however, is called a neo
eclectic, significantly assuming the role of a regeneration of period styles for designing houses,
and a never ending variety of forms and characteristics, asymmetrical designs for commercial
buildings (Fullerton Heritage, 2008). An example of these two polar opposites, Less is more made

Although, most post modernist architects had been associated with modern architects in terms of
training during the twentieth century, they refused most their teachers ideas. In addition, today s
architects cannot deny the modern architecture ways of designing any building. Their design, for
instance, has many philosophical meaning such as constructional, environmental, sociological,
commercial and metaphorical meaning. The main difference between these two schools is that the
architects point of view to any design as a means of communication (Chan, 1997). Modern
architecture, for example, focus on the aesthetics of architectural language, while post modernity
adjust in constant effort to achieve what is more than unity and focus on the traditional concepts,
therefore both schools are in competition with each other. Second basic principle of modern school
is the production beauty by basic technology (Chan, 1997), and this led to a contradiction on the
post modernism architects being attempted to use primitive technology. Their particular case is to
access and change the impact of the traditional architecture through all people. Therefore, to achieve
this goal they have addressed the issues of beauty and technology within the general concept of the
design. Despite different thoughts on the features of post modernism definition, it is clearly seen
that people ,who are interested in beauties, are

During the period of 1915 1948 the British Policy toward Palestine and the creation of Israel

the British Government and their correspondences with the Jewish, Arabs and German in their
quest to gain allies and an independent Jewish State. Some of these documents include Der
Judenstaat, The McMahon Hussein Correspondence, the Balfour Declaration, the British Mandate

In October, 1915, McMahon wrote to Hussein on behalf of the British government about boundaries
of the Arab state. The main point behind this document was that Britain would the Arabs to an Arab
State, in return for their support as allies in World War One against the Ottoman Empire. In this
letter, McMahon notes a few areas of Syria that would have to be excluded from the boundaries as
they cannot be said to be purely Arab . This is the point at which the document greatly complicates
the situation as the Arabs interpreted this as Britain promising Palestine to them at the end of the
War. This document represents Britain making a series of promises to the Arab people , and
convincing the Arabs to rise up and help Britain revolt against the Ottomans and Turks so that they
could live freely. This document was written to gain allies for Britain and to help them expand their
empire by befriending the Arabs and convincing them that they could help and protect them. The
second document mentioned is the Sykes Picot Agreement, this was an agreement written in secret
between Britain and France in which they ultimately divided the Middle East between themselves
and Russia. This agreement was written whilst the McMahon Hussein Correspondence was

Alcohol In The Media Analysis
Shaken or Stirred?
How alcohol in the media affects young minds.
Media plays a big part in portraying alcohol to be something that young Australians feel they need
to try. Media does not just refer to their portrayal in television shows and movies, but also the role
advertisements have on television, radio, music, billboards, internet, signs, video games, public
transport and magazines. Television advertisement plays a major role in the attraction of alcohol to
adolescence, and a key aspect of this is the timeslot in which they are shown. The timeslot in which
television advertisements depict alcoholic beverages are more often than not in between programs
that are popular amongst the younger generations. This includes cartoons and programs ... Show

Many youth even try to study these portrayals in order to look and act like the people they see in
the ads. They often show that increased social status and an overall acceptance by society will
most certainly be the result of consumption. This gets even more complicated when celebrities
and role models often associated with adolescence are portrayed with alcohol, as the younger
generation will feel more compelled to try alcohol if their role models do. This can lead to a
subconscious abuse of alcohol simply due to the fact that they don t know any better.
Advertisements aren t the only form of media that draws younger viewers in. Movies and television
programs that depict main, or even minor, characters consuming alcohol can also cause adolescence
to feel that there must not be that many negative effects if these people are doing it, or that the
negative effects must be worth it. A study shows that 52.1% of movies contain alcohol brand name
appearances, while 83% contained the consumption of

Physics of Pinball Essay
Physics of Pinball
Pinball is a fast pace game of physics and skill. With the knowledge of the mechanics and the
physics of how the game works it can be played more effectively. Friction, gravity, potential energy,
kinetic energy, circuits and momentum are just a few of the aspects of physics apply.
The first thing to do to start a game of pinball is to insert the coin. This alone requires many
fundamental aspects of physics. The player inserts the coin and lets gravity take over. Gravity
accelerates the coin to a certain speed in a specific direction or what is called velocity. The coin,
which has mass, is now moving at a certain velocity. The coin now has linear momentum. To find
the momentum of the coin we would take the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The player has now compressed the spring in the ball shooter. The ball sitting in the ball shooter
is at rest. It will be at rest until acted on by an unbalanced force. This is Newton s first law of
motion, the law of inertia (Kirkpatrick and Wheeler p31). The ball shooter is then released the
spring decompresses and strikes the ball sending it up the incline to the top of the pinball playing
field. The strike on the ball is called the impulse. The time interval it takes for the ball momentum
to change. Since the ball has no momentum because it has zero velocity the ball shooter transfers its
momentum at the impulse (The Ball Shooter 2003). This also takes place in the time frame of
about a second.
The ball now has kinetic energy. Kinetic energy like momentum in that it comes from the mass
of the object and its velocity. Kinetic energy was transferred from the plunger to the ball just
like momentum was but only if the collision was elastic. During and elastic collision kinetic
energy is conserved. The balls kinetic energy is half of its momentum squared. This means the
balls momentum is its mass multiplied by velocity, and then it is squared and divided by two. If
the velocity or speed of the ball is reduced by one half then the overall kinetic energy is reduced by
a factor of four (Kirkpatrick and Wheeler p.106)
The ball uses this kinetic energy to move up the usually 6 to 7 degree incline to the top of the
playing field. The kinetic

Yet it is still well received and becoming very popular in todays society. Now a days you can
influence anyone through media, whether it is music or even a music video Anyone can agree
that the use of violence in music today is much more prominent than it was many years ago. The
Music genre I m going to focus on is Hip Hop or Rap. My Hypothesis is to compare music from
the 1970 s to the 2000 s and prove that Hip Hop is more likely to talk about drugs, sex, and
violence in the 2000 s versus the 1970 s and how strong of an influence it has on society. The
theory I decided to go with on this research project is the Cultivation Theory Which argues media
shapes a persons sense of reality because many acquire information through mediated sources
rather than direct experience, their world view becomes influenced by these sources. For
example people who would be defined as heavy Hip Hop listeners can react to certain situations
more violently than they would of without having all the emotional influence from violent hip
hop songs. So I want to see if Hip Hop can really be influenced to commit crimes and live the
same type of way they hear through a song or treat people the way they hear through a song. Or
basically do listeners cultivate or adopt beliefs about the world that coincide with messages they
have been hearing. In the 1970 s the Hip Hop culture began in the streets of New York City. One of
the first entrepreneurs of Hip Hop was a man by the name of Kool DJ Herc. In

The Importance Of Student Apathy In School
Student apathy creates a detrimental toll on a student s mindset. An apathetic student fails to have
production in the classroom. These students would rather fail instead of trying to keep up with
their schoolwork. Failing is easier than running the rick of being seen as average or below average.
(De Lay, Swan 106). Student apathy fails to create an engaging culture in a school district. Since
students feel the affects of student apathy, they often perceive themselves as unsuccessful (De Lay,
Swan 112). In a school majorly affected by student apathy, students associate school with the
purpose of passing grades. Educationmust hold a purpose and seen as an importance to students.
Engagement and achievement in the classroom does not matter when they have passing grades
(Christman 3). When students receive their degree, they do not care how hard they worked to get
it. A degree can lead to a job, and that is what matters in the real world. Students have a
professional goal in mind whether it is a job or college. Classes that do not relate to the real world
do not matter to a majority of these students. Engagement exhibits itself in classrooms, which helps
students in everyday life (De Lay, Swan). Apathy presents itself in more than high schoolstudents.
Senioritis was once the only major apathetic problem in schools. Student apathy has crept its
way into middle and elementary grade levels. As students reach the end of their public school
education, they often slack off in their schoolwork, which is known as senioritis. With little
pressure on the seniors, they take the year off by producing as little amount of work as possible.
Students affected by senioritis are not prepared for college or the real world. Their reading and
writing skills deteriorate when they are not learning in their senior year The students who go to
college after this stay in school for longer than the usual four years (Puente 1). As student apathy
displays across all grade levels, it becomes a major problem. Relationships between students and
teachers as well as the teaching methods used highly affects the lower grade levels. Students bored
in the classroom often check out and fail to stay engaged in their class (De Lay, Swan 111). Little

complement the questionnaires and review of documentary sources. The questionnaire was
structured to a five point Likert scale, where strongly agree was assigned 1 point, agree was
assigned 2 points, neutral was assigned 3 points, disagree 4 points and strongly disagree 5 points.
Descriptive study design was adopted in conducting this research study. Descriptive research is the
process of collecting data so as to test hypotheses or in order to answer questions regarding the
current status of the variables or subjects in the study which is very useful as the respondents were
given enough time to respond to the questionnaires without any interference whatsoever or
manipulation (Williams, 2007; Ary et al., 2009). The descriptive study included survey and fact
finding enquiries. This is the most preferred research technique as it provides a more generalized
outcome of the study population. Thus this design was considered most useful for generalizing the
research findings (Sindhu, 2012).
The literature used in this study was obtained from original articles retrieved from online

Urban Sustainability And Its Impact On The Environment
Introduction Urban sustainability is a very important topic that needs to be addressed and focused
on so that cities and communities all over the world can change and reduce their harmful impact on
the environment. In order to do so, communities must develop sustainably by focusing on how to
manage resources in a way that guarantees welfare and promotes equity of current and future
generations (Elmqvist, 2013). The impact of urbanization is only going to increase, so cities
around the world need to find the means to do it in the most environmentally friendly and
sustainable ways possible (Allen, 2009). Cities are a focus for sustainability because they are a hub
of human activity and development, production, and consumption of goods (Elmqvist, 2013).
Citizens and their governments need to embrace sustainability so they can secure the means of
survival, improve the quality of the community, protect the environment, maintain healthy citizens,
and to have pride in the legacy left for future generations (Roseland, 2012, p.3). A big issue for
urban areas in developed countries is that they have become less reliant on their surrounding areas
for sustenance and are increasingly importing consumer goods, food, energy, water, and building
material from distant sources (Allen, 2009). Waste is also being exported from urban areas to
distant regions (Allen, 2009). Cities and communities should try to be more sustainable and more
self reliant by using the surrounding areas to produce

(Ashley, et al., 2001) The degree of control is significant element of sustainability and the debate is
how local communities should be involved in the sustainable development of tourism in their area.
If sustainable tourism development is successful, it may help pro poor tourism to reduce the
poverty in different levels. (Mowforth Munt, 2003) To achieve the sustainable tourism in poor
regions tourism development needs to be well planned and managed and the overall environmental
quality needs to be maintained and improved. Poverty reduction impacts should be taken into

e. Community tourism and pro poor tourism in South Africa: a critical review of practice to date
(Helin Henrietta)
In 1996 the government of South Africa published the White Paper on the Development and
Promotion of Tourism which set frameworks for South Africa s new tourism policy. (Richards
Wilson, 2007) The White Paper identifies that community based tourism has a lot of potential on
developing South Africa s economy and implies many examples of community participation
possibilities. It also recognises the difficulties of community tourism, for example a lack of
awareness, lack of information or training and lack of access to finance. (Hughes Vaughan, 2001)
Over the last decade there have been major changes in tourism development and actions in
community tourism and pro poor tourism have become more common. The

which for that time was unheard of their contributions were not limited to: textbooks of anatomy,
training for physicians, the first textbook about women s medicine and the first female medical
school faculty member named Trotula de Ruggiero (Ferraris Z. Ferraris V. 1997). For this school

notoriety throughout southern Europe (Ferraris Z. Ferraris V. 1997). The school of Salerno was

huge collections of drug remedies based largely on well known Arabic pharmacopeia, and one the

the diverse culture, architecture, and captures the spirit of these medieval towns. It also allows for

Correlation Between the Attack on Pearl Harbor and the...
The events of the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 changed not just the American way of
life, but the way in which terrorism will forever be viewed. Moments after the first plane changed
our way of life by crashing into the first tower, it also changed the way people will live their lives
for many generations from that point forward. For the first time on Continental United States soil,
America was under siege. Months after the attackmany political figures and citizens wondered
about warning signs and if there were indicators that may have identified a warning or imminent
attack. As the attacks were analyzed a correlation between the attack on Pearl Harbor and New York
City had indicators of imminent attacks.

These messages, intercepted on December 3rd and 4th weren t translated until December 10th.
The messages showed Tokyo asking for information concerning Pearl Harbor. Japan had no reason
to ask for this information, unless it planned to use it to attack ships in the harbor. If translated
sooner, these messages would have warned the US of the imminent attack. Many indicators for
Pearl Harbor could have repeated before the attack on the calm morning on 9 1 1.
In the past, there were many attacks on Americans that were treated as extremist acts and
indicators of continuing attacks against Americans and their targets of opportunity. One
premonition of the 9 1 1 attacks occurred on the very site of the actual attack on 9 1 1. On
February 26, 1993, the World Trade Center was attacked by terrorists (Federal Bureau of
Investigation, 2008). They place a truck loaded with 1,500 lbs of explosive in the basement
structure of the North Tower. Their intention was to topple it into the South Tower killing
thousands. The results were six killed and almost two thousand injured when the devastation was
completed. Closer to the 9 1 1 attack, men with Middle Eastern physical traits wanted to learn how
to fly planes without learning to land them. This should have been an indicator of hidden agendas
which should have raised more alarms.
Security and Terrorism
So, with all these indicators and

Modern Society Is Unethical Using The Emulation Theory
Aristotle argues that the pattern of status competition in American society is unethical using the
emulation theory. According to Aristotle, humans are the most imitative of all creatures and status
competition is a cycle of mutual emulation. Emulation is a pain which is caused by the presence of
good things that are highly valued. How emulation works is that there is the person who is doing
the emulation, the individual who is being emulated, and then relationship between the two. The
second individual provides a model for the first individual, who then decides they are similar to the
model. Humans do not emulate individuals who have something that is deemed undesirable, the
idea is let them have it, I don t want it. Because the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Joneses are actually salesmen pretending to be a normal family while those around them
crave the items they are selling and eventually putting themselves in a serious economic
/emotional crisis. This is an example of what Aristotle means when he says emulation brings
pain, because one of the characters, Frank, ends up committing suicide because he gave into
status competition. He did not care about his wife s business, or the simple fact that he had bills
and a mortgage to pay. Instead he kept buying things, much like the Baby Boomers, and worked
his way into a debt that he could not get out of because he cared too much about his reputation
and how popular he wanted to seem to his friends. The emulators, in the movie, are the
individuals who set out to buy the items the family was selling. Aristotle also stated that some
people are only concerned with keeping up with their neighbors, copying their every move. It
becomes a life obsession, and that was the main idea of the movie. Aristotle believes in order to
follow the mean and be rational, one must avoid excess or deficiency by asking themselves if they
re emulating at the right times and places? Do you actually need to consume? Are you consuming
the right amount of goods? How will my emulating affect myself or those around me? Aristotle
reaches several conclusions on virtue and describes it as a state of character, and what it means for
a human to be virtuous. For example, the excellence of the eye

The Spiritual Practice Of Sabbath
My life is full of habits. And a lot of them. Some of them are really good habits, but,
unfortunately, some of them are really bad. One of the bad habits I ve become accustomed to
over the years is working myself to my breakpoint and not taking a chance to breathe. More than
that I tend to keep busy way more often than I should be some simply over just trivial things.
That is why I decided to choose the spiritual practice of Sabbath where I took one 24 hour period
in my week and dedicated it to simply rest and rejuvenate and nothing more. Now by rest, I don t
necessarily mean sleep, a lot of times it was just doing what brings me pleasure and replenishes me
instead of exhausting myself, or giving to me, instead of taking from me.
Although I have heard people talking about the Sabbath growing up multiple times, I have never
heard it phrased like it was in this class: as a spiritual formative practice. To my dismay, that was
all it has been until this class. My extent of knowledge about Sabbath had only came from some of
what I ve read about it in the Bible. That was when the Jews practiced Sabbath as commanded
under the Mosaic Law, given to them when they were in the wilderness. Exodus 20:8 10 shares,
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but
the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. The Jews were allowed to do no work on this
day, marked as Friday evening until Saturday evening on the Jewish calendar.

Therefore, Martin and Hitchcock both use the technique of irony to portray the ethics and
significance of those who abandon their moral values and beliefs. The novel A Game of

they are faced with hard truths. Martin portrays the protagonist Eddard Stark to be a man of
honour and respect with high ethical values, this is shown through many other characters
opinions such as Jon, Jon tells Eddard You wear your honour like a suit of armour... when
explaining the oath is a social bond that needs to be respected and upheld. Eddard is seen to be

Eddard hires soldiers to overtake the crown and kingdom. The novel states to consider duty and

Introduction If you asked me to describe my life in a short essay it would be highly difficult for
many reasons. From being a country boy from Bunn, North Carolina, to enlisting in the United
States Army, and being deployed to Afghanistan the story of my life has token many paths. In this
essay I will take you down the road of me trying to enlist in the Marine Corps and becoming a
soldier in the United StatesArmy.
The Drive to Join As a young man I have always had the ambition to serve my country. Watching
television has not made that any better for the reason when I see a commercial about the military
my motivation to join skyrockets. Walking thru Bunn High School as a senior, I remember when
the Marine recruiter used to come by in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I spent my time at Louisburg College running cross country and walked out of there with a
Associates Degree in Business Administration. After graduating, I knew that student loans were
going to be a toll and I also wanted to attend another university to gather a bachelor s degree. I
wanted to please my father and myself for the dream I always had could help me pay for college.
Presenting my father with a plan was the goal in accomplishing my dream and I knew he did not
want his son to be in debt with student loans. Gathering the information was the start so I
contacted an army recruiter to see how I was going to pay for college. He presented me with a
student loan repayment program and also an incentive how I could pay for my bachelors and
possibly masters. After he gave me the plan I presented it to my father. Again he was not for it.
He told me he could let his son be buried in a pine box for trying to defend this nation. My father
was adamant but what was the deciding factor was me letting him know I couldn t continue my
education and I was going to be in debt. He then realized and told me, son you are a man for
putting your body on the line to provide for yourself and get an education. I knew I had a winner
then. Even though I did not need his permission I wanted his condolences. I then enlisted in the
United States Army as a young man at the age of 20 with a plan for my life. I pleased my father and
also accomplished a dream that

The Authority Of Religious Elites In The 1640s Witch Hunts
The Authority of Religious Elites in the 1640s Witch Hunts The large scale witch hunts that
occurred from 1638 to 1651 gathered momentum via major happenings in the political, societal, and
religious domains developing at the time. Individuals who had either political, religious or
economic power in society, also known as elites, together had absolute control over the pursuit and
prosecution of individuals who partook in witchcraft. The clergy played a crucial role in the
witchcraft prosecutions and were slower than the state and localities to desert their beliefs in the
reality of witches as the prosecution of witchcraft was, in their eyes, an effective tool to eradicate
social deviance. Though local authorities and the Parliament did contribute to the witch hunts
significantly, without the kirk of Scotlanddeclaring and encouraging this sanction on witchcraft,
both other parties would not have taken the actions they ultimately did. This essay will provide a
brief description of events that took place from 1638 to 1651 and then utilize evidence from a
multitude of sources to argue that the religious elites were the most influential of these forces
during the witchcraft prosecutions that occurred in the 1640s. Due to the Scots dissatisfaction with
the current monarch, King Charles I, the National Covenant was formed by on February 28th in
1638 at Greyfrairs Kirk in Edinburgh. All his subjects were welcome to sign this document as it
was viewed as an irrevocable contract

Summary Of Marrying Absurd
In Marrying Absurd , Joan Didion illustrates the nonsensical circus that marriage in Las Vegas is.
The city makes the ceremony of marriage out to be the clown at the circus, and there is no
respect for it. Using Las Vegas and its dysfunctional behavior as its backdrop, Didion was able to
cleverly ridicule marriageas an institution and the wedding industry as a whole. She was able to
say that if marriage was allowed in the city where Dressing Rooms, Flowers, Rings , and other
services were a common staple, then there was something wrong with the institution as a whole.
Didion effectively argued that unrealistic expectations were just used as a cash cow for the wedding
industry and the Strip chapels . Throughout the essay, Didion

Finding Rhetoric in Our Lives
The commercial of my choice was the Old Spice ad that is advertising their new line of body
wash that is advertised having odor block power. The commercial is made by old spice and has a
lot of ethos, pathos, and logos throughout the commercial, and is very effective at all three. I think
that the commercial works and gets straight to the point in a very short time. Its main goal is to
sell and make money off their product that is said to keep you smelling god and stopping odor from
coming off you. They use a very famous actor, Terry Crews, to tell you that the product works and
he even shows how it blocks the odor, and it uses logos by giving off the time it ... Show more

It demonstrates how he washes his body and it takes immediate effects in stopping the odor.
Another instance of the commercial using ethos is how often the ad and all the diversity in
each one being played everywhere on everything, which shows that they have a good feeling that
people will see this and purchase the product from them as soon as possible. The brand of Old
Spice already does have a good reputation and is one of the leading brands in men s health and
cleanliness behind Axe brand. So it doesn t need as many appeals to ethos because they already
have good credibility and most people know the name and will trust them. The uses of pathos is
how he seems to be screaming at the audience which may seem to intimidate them into buying the
old spice body wash. He seems over excited and is very big which may make you feel like if you
don t buy it then he ll do something about it. There are a lot of different emotional appeals through
this commercial that will affect many people in different emotional states while hearing the
commercial. It is very effective and is the most predominately used rhetoric device used in the
commercial. Another emotional response you feel would be happiness because the commercial is
overall a comedic ad that wants to make you feel happy and make you feel like you can trust them
and their product. They portray this by having him express his opinions on odor and why you

Bronchitis And Its Effect On The Respiratory System
Many things can have a negative effect on the respiratory system; ranging from irritants to genetic
causes. Asthma is a disease that causes the lungs to become inflamed. With asthma when the lungs
come in contact with irritants such as smoke or dust the airways to tighten and narrow. Another
problem that could occur with the respiratory systemis bronchitis. When a human has got
bronchitis, the membrane lining of the bronchial tubes becomes inflamed and more mucus is
produced. One of the main causes for bronchitis is smoking. Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease
affecting the lungs. Cystic Fibrosis causes mucus in the body to be abnormally thick. The mucus
can clog the airways in the lungs and therefore make people more prone to getting

England Vs Lutheranism
Differences of the Church of England and Lutheranism The Church of England was church
started by King Henry the VII during the 1500 s. Henry created this church because the Pope
wouldn t let him divorce, so after he built the church, he got divorced. This lead to King Henry
the VII having six wives the first, wife he divorced was Catherine of Aragon. His goal was to
have one son so he could run the throne. Sadly his third wife, Jane had a son, but because of that
Jane died. His son died at the age of 15, because of tuberculosis. He had another wife named
Anne of cleves which King Henry called of the wedding but made her, his loyal sister. Anne
Boleyn was Henry s second wife, out of this marriage caused the birth of Bloody Mary. Lutheranism

Fast Food And The Food Meal Essay
A fast food meal may not be so simple after all considering the ingredients that go into a meal. We
aren t fully aware of what all the ingredients are in our food. We just see either a short or a long
list of words that is just scientific jargon to us. We do become more concerned of what we are
eating if there is a long endless list of contents. One ingredient that we all know if high fructose
corn syrup. There are high amounts of it in our fast foodwhich explains why we can get so
addicted to fast food. Earlier I said most of what a fast food meal is comprised of is sugar, carbs,
and sodium. Sugar and fat are the leading ingredients that give us an energy boost. They make
energy dense foods which is what fast food is an energy dense food. Energy dense foods are
inexpensive to produce. Pollan says one reason that obesity and diabetes become more prevalent
the further down the socioeconomic scale you look is that the industrial food chain has made
energy dense foods the cheapest foods in the market (107). Sugar is pretty cheap and it makes
sense to price a meal at a low rate. We can t forget that most of a meal is also comprised of corn
which make it cheaper too. Because they are inexpensive, their price isn t sky high which makes
it ideal for low income families. They are able to afford a high calorie meal at a low price. This
explains why obesity tends to be more prevalent in low income households. As we can see, the low
price of fast food contributes to the weight gain

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Semisolid Processing
2.1THE BEGINNING OF SEMISOLID PROCESSING
Semisolid processing originates with the research at MIT on the viscosity behavior of tin/lead
alloys during solidification, published by Spencer,Mehrabian, and Flemings in 1972.The original
purpose was to examine the shear stress of semisolid structures with a view to shedding light on hot
tearing mechanisms in solidifying alloys, but it was discovered that the process of shearing clearly
altered the microstructure, changing the dendritic morphology of the solid into more spherical
form that brought about a dramatic fall in shear stress and viscosity. This is of course the
phenomenon of Thixotropy, well known to ceramicists and polymer scientists, but until then not
observed in metallic systems. This discovery at MIT initiated an in depth study of thixotropy in
alloys, and the awareness that stirred semisolid alloys could be injected as in die casting into molds
with certain advantages: The controlled higher viscosity flow meant that less air ... Show more

Semi solid metal processing enables us to manufacture complicated shape components with near net
wall, good mechanical properties and high dimension tolerance accuracy [34]. SSP has some
advantages in comparison with conventional casting, such as decreasing the macrosegregation and
solidification shrinkage and reducing forming temperature [35]. Because of the absence of the
dendritic solid phase in the semi solid state, the alloy is easily shaped. The nondendritic
microstructure contains solid phase globules suspended in the liquid phase [33, 36].
The main advantages and disadvantages of SSM, relative to die casting, have been summarized by
Atkinson [37] to be as follows:
Advantages of SSM:
пѓ Energy efficiency: metal is not being held in the liquid state over long periods of

Keyshawn Narrative
Grumpy and already five precious minutes late for his afternoon snack, Keyshawn glanced
quickly at the words in the column to the left and started to write simple sentences using those
words: I piled up all the dishes in the dish rack. I mopped up all the water and I dried the floor.
Imagine that you re a housekeeper , the spelling homework instructions had read. It was hard to
tell who was more fed up with the assignment, the hungry Keyshawn, or I, his frustrated tutor.
What do you say we make this a little more interesting? I asked. Keyshawn put his head down on
his desk and groaned. I don t want to, I want my snack. C mon, I encouraged, just three more
sentences! Make em count. Keyshawn picked up his pencil, started to write, and immediately
erased his progress. His face lit up. He scribbled the next few sentences so quickly they were almost
illegible: A small dinosaur popped out of the toilet and pushed down all the soap so I carried him to
the forest. I rubbed his back so he fell asleep. I stacked blankets on him so he could keep warm.
Then, I dusted off his little ashy head. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

students, like Keyshawn, who are struggling to maintain passing grades in standard level classes.
Students like Keyshawn are not told they can handle high school level math in seventh grade.

  • 2. Upton Sinclair The Jungle Analysis Good morning Mary, Since the industrial revolution, our country has made tremendous strides to ensure Equal Employment Opportunity and safe work environments. Horror stories of unfair treatment and unsafe work environments are portrayed in Upton Sinclair s The Jungle . Factory working conditions are portrayed as men, women, and child work long hours in unsafe conditions with no worker rights whatsoever (Sinclair, 2011). As workers died in the factory or were injured, another warm body was placed in their position (Sinclair, 2011). Wages were almost nonexistent (Sinclair, 2011). It is because of unsafe working environments, low wages, long hours, etc. that the government decided to intervene and create various regulatory groups. As we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Copyright In The Music Industry Since the recording of music began, the music industry has been very dependent on record labels to help artist reach mainstream success. The role of a record label is to assist an artist/musician in gaining of the attention consumers. Along with that these labels also aid performers in marketing their work through radio, magazines, newspapers, and television, but also involves the marketing of music recordings and live performances. The majority of the time they would send artist s work to publishers that would work on trademarks, production, manufacture, distribution, marketing, promotion, but most importantly is the enforcement of copyrightlaws for written and sound recordings. With that being said record labels are the ones who set the terms... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For a jazz musician copyrights usually, applies to tunes and notes that are already written down and not solos. Copyright laws consider most early jazz songs as derivative works. What that means is that copyright protection and rights are based not on what the jazz musician has added, but what he has used. Under the Copyright Act, the owner of the composition copyright has the exclusive right to prepare derivative works based upon the copyrighted work. Categorizing jazz interpolations as derivative works have practical consequences that do not favor the jazz musician. As an initial matter, there is the issue of how jazz musicians must go about obtaining the rights even to record the song. The Act creates a compulsory licensing scheme for copyrighted compositions, which allows players to use any musical composition without having to negotiate with the copyright owner for permission, so long as the musical work has been licensed previously to someone else for mechanical reproduction and the musician pays a statutory royalty. Usually, all they needed was a mechanical license to perform the works that were covered. The license would allow them to automatically get permission from the artist from the artist and the publishers in return guaranteeing them royalties from the cover. Musicians have more immediate access to previous artistic works than artists in other mediums seeking to use prior works. The compulsory licensing scheme for musical derivative works thus alleviates some of the transaction costs of bargaining. The problem is that obtaining a compulsory license does not protect the original musical contributions added in the subsequent artist s rendition. That is, compulsory licensees convey only the right to record and distribute the underlying work. A separate copyright does not automatically attach another form of the material to that copyright. If a musician wants to protect his pieces, he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. How Does Beer Affect Society Beer a.Despite the negative connotations that come with the drink today, beer has actually played a huge role in shaping societies. One example of this takes place with the Sumerian people of Mesopotamia. Beer drinkers were widely depicted as drinking with a straw, this became a symbol of hospitality and friendship, the tradition of clinking glasses when sharing alcohol also can be traced to beer. Another subtle, yet important way that beer contributed to society is that it helped eliminate the nomadic hunter gathering lifestyle from before. b.Beer also helped influence the history of some societies. The constant thirst for beer led to the creation of mash tubs made specifically for creating beer; this in turn allowed people to become more creative. By adding things such as berries, honey, spices and herbs to the tubs, the beer altered in taste and thus, became a drink used for different occasions. Egyptian records also refer to beer as the beautiful and good and the heavenly . Beer was also used in religious ceremonies and bappir or beer bread, was created and used for food shortages. ... • 7. Psychosexual Stages And Societal Structure Psychosexual Stages and Societal Structure Nathanael D. Evans Montana State University Billings Abstract This paper assumes that Sigmund Freud s theory of psychosexual stages in childhood development is accurate. Given the information we have on Freud s idea of fixations, and their causes, I will explore how societal structure would need to shift towards an acute focus on childhood in order to eliminate as much abnormality as possible from the adulthood of all individuals that make up a society. I will also speculate on ideas for streamlining childhood development, by treating it as an assembly line process. My points will be highly figurative, as the implementation of the ideas contained herein would not be possible without removing rights from the populace. However, we must assume, in the spirit of this exercise, that implementation can occur, and that the theories being examined are accurate in all cases of abnormality. Psychosexual Stages and Societal Structure If we are to assume that the earliest experiences of an individual influence their later personality traits, then it should be assumed that the structure of our society should revolve around a universal set of guidelines for child rearing, so as to avoid abnormality in the individual in later life. On the larger scale, if all individuals are raised in identical fashion, societal structure would be uniform. Sigmund Freud referred to the stages of childhood development as psychosexual stages. • 8. Washington Organized An Effective Approach Of Gradualism... Washington organized an effective approach of gradualism among blacks but was disrupted by militant leaders like W.E.B. Dubois. After reconstruction, the hopes for full citizenship rights were broken when the government renewed white supremacist control to the South. The government adopted a laissez faire policy, and the Jim Crow laws brought social, occupation, and educational discrimination to the American Negro. In 1896, the Supreme Court s decision in Plessy v. Ferguson strengthened the segregation of public facilities in the South. Some leaders supported violence, some urged a return to Africa, and most encouraged peaceful means to change the conditions. Some supported a fight for civil rights, especially the right to vote and others wanted blacks to become skilled workers. These two approaches are called the economic strategy and the political strategy. Washington supported the gradualist economic strategy. He wanted whites to agree to black progress in agriculture, education, and economics. He believed that African Americans should be able to have some jobs and get some education but did not believe complete equality was a practical goal. African Americans should work hard for a job, not have it handed to them. Agriculture was one of the most important aspects to his idea of racial uplift. He supported education in farming and industrial skills, crafts, and development of enterprise, patience, and thrift. He believed they would receive respect from whites and gain ... The story is about a lonely, elderly woman making her weekly visit to the park where she spends her Sunday afternoons. She enjoys hearing the sound of a band playing and the soothing atmosphere surrounding her, but most importantly she enjoys engaging in the lives of other people through observing and listening. The story focuses on Miss Brill s isolation of herself into the illusion of her own mind, an internal conflict which is made worse by her loneliness. Sufferers in these cases are often people. Nonetheless, these callous obscenities should not be seen as less important when animals are the victims. Animals undergo horrendous abuse due to barbaric individuals, greed, and unnecessary lab testing. Animals are beaten and abused on a daily basis due to barbaric individuals. Whether it be from harmful intentions or pure negligence most cases go unreported. Deliberate cruelty may involve beating, shooting, stabbing animals, or setting them on fire. Neglect is not giving a necessary food, water, shelter, or vet care (Human Society). The lack of attention and care for these animals can often lead to severe, and sometimes irrevocable damage. The Animal Legal Defense Fund, ALDF for short, website tells of one story where neighbors of a farm complained to the local humane society, that the Colliers were neglecting many animals on their farm, including dogs and horses. When they went to their property to investigate, they discovered dogs and horses in several states of neglect and starvation and seized them out of concern for their immediate health (ALDF). Essay on Modern and Post-Modernism Architecture There is often some confusion when people start talking about the post modernism and modernism in architecture in terms of their philosophical terminology differences. Modern architecture is known for its minimalism (Linder, 2004); buildings were functional and economical rather than comfortable and beautifully decorated. The post modernismarchitecture, however, is called a neo eclectic, significantly assuming the role of a regeneration of period styles for designing houses, and a never ending variety of forms and characteristics, asymmetrical designs for commercial buildings (Fullerton Heritage, 2008). In addition, today s architects cannot deny the modern architecture ways of designing any building. The main difference between these two schools is that the architects point of view to any design as a means of communication (Chan, 1997). Modern architecture, for example, focus on the aesthetics of architectural language, while post modernity adjust in constant effort to achieve what is more than unity and focus on the traditional concepts, therefore both schools are in competition with each other. Second basic principle of modern school is the production beauty by basic technology (Chan, 1997), and this led to a contradiction on the post modernism architects being attempted to use primitive technology. Their particular case is to access and change the impact of the traditional architecture through all people. The balls kinetic energy is half of its momentum squared. This means the balls momentum is its mass multiplied by velocity, and then it is squared and divided by two. If the velocity or speed of the ball is reduced by one half then the overall kinetic energy is reduced by a factor of four (Kirkpatrick and Wheeler p.106) The ball uses this kinetic energy to move up the usually 6 to 7 degree incline to the top of the playing field. Now a days you can influence anyone through media, whether it is music or even a music video Anyone can agree that the use of violence in music today is much more prominent than it was many years ago. The Music genre I m going to focus on is Hip Hop or Rap. My Hypothesis is to compare music from the 1970 s to the 2000 s and prove that Hip Hop is more likely to talk about drugs, sex, and violence in the 2000 s versus the 1970 s and how strong of an influence it has on society. The theory I decided to go with on this research project is the Cultivation Theory Which argues media shapes a persons sense of reality because many acquire information through mediated sources rather than direct experience, their world view becomes influenced by these sources. For example people who would be defined as heavy Hip Hop listeners can react to certain situations more violently than they would of without having all the emotional influence from violent hip hop songs. So I want to see if Hip Hop can really be influenced to commit crimes and live the same type of way they hear through a song or treat people the way they hear through a song. Or basically do listeners cultivate or adopt beliefs about the world that coincide with messages they have been hearing. In the 1970 s the Hip Hop culture began in the streets of New York City. The Three Major Battles Of The Vietnam War The Vietnam war, also known as the Second Indochina war, was a very dark time. The war was between Northern Vietnam and the PAVN (People s Army of Vietnam) supported by China, and Southern Vietnam and the ARVN (The Army of the Republic of Vietnam) supported by the United States. And the war consisted of three major battles. There was the battle of Ap Bac (the very first battle of the war and a major loss for the Southern Vietnam), the battle of Khe Sanh (the middle of the war and the turning point of the war for Northern Vietnam), and the battle of Xuan Loc (the very end of the war and another victory for Northern Vietnam). This was a controlling time for Vietnam. The battle of Ap Bac as the very first battle of the Vietnam war. It was fought by the ARVN and the PAVN. The battle ended with a surprising loss for the ARVN, consisting an army of 2,500 troops who failed to defeat 350 Northern Vietnam guerrillas. • 22. The Importance Of Student Apathy In School Student apathy creates a detrimental toll on a student s mindset. An apathetic student fails to have production in the classroom. These students would rather fail instead of trying to keep up with their schoolwork. Failing is easier than running the rick of being seen as average or below average. (De Lay, Swan 106). Student apathy fails to create an engaging culture in a school district. Since students feel the affects of student apathy, they often perceive themselves as unsuccessful (De Lay, Swan 112). In a school majorly affected by student apathy, students associate school with the purpose of passing grades. Educationmust hold a purpose and seen as an importance to students. Engagement and achievement in the classroom does not matter when they have passing grades (Christman 3). When students receive their degree, they do not care how hard they worked to get it. A degree can lead to a job, and that is what matters in the real world. Students have a professional goal in mind whether it is a job or college. Classes that do not relate to the real world do not matter to a majority of these students. Engagement exhibits itself in classrooms, which helps students in everyday life (De Lay, Swan). Apathy presents itself in more than high schoolstudents. Senioritis was once the only major apathetic problem in schools. Student apathy has crept its way into middle and elementary grade levels. As students reach the end of their public school education, they often slack off in their schoolwork, which is known as senioritis. With little pressure on the seniors, they take the year off by producing as little amount of work as possible. Students affected by senioritis are not prepared for college or the real world. Their reading and writing skills deteriorate when they are not learning in their senior year The students who go to college after this stay in school for longer than the usual four years (Puente 1). As student apathy displays across all grade levels, it becomes a major problem. Relationships between students and teachers as well as the teaching methods used highly affects the lower grade levels. Students bored in the classroom often check out and fail to stay engaged in their class (De Lay, Swan 111). Little ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The questionnaire was structured to a five point Likert scale, where strongly agree was assigned 1 point, agree was assigned 2 points, neutral was assigned 3 points, disagree 4 points and strongly disagree 5 points. Descriptive study design was adopted in conducting this research study. Descriptive research is the process of collecting data so as to test hypotheses or in order to answer questions regarding the current status of the variables or subjects in the study which is very useful as the respondents were given enough time to respond to the questionnaires without any interference whatsoever or manipulation (Williams, 2007; Ary et al., 2009). • 27. Urban Sustainability And Its Impact On The Environment Introduction Urban sustainability is a very important topic that needs to be addressed and focused on so that cities and communities all over the world can change and reduce their harmful impact on the environment. In order to do so, communities must develop sustainably by focusing on how to manage resources in a way that guarantees welfare and promotes equity of current and future generations (Elmqvist, 2013). The impact of urbanization is only going to increase, so cities around the world need to find the means to do it in the most environmentally friendly and sustainable ways possible (Allen, 2009). Cities are a focus for sustainability because they are a hub of human activity and development, production, and consumption of goods (Elmqvist, 2013). Citizens and their governments need to embrace sustainability so they can secure the means of survival, improve the quality of the community, protect the environment, maintain healthy citizens, and to have pride in the legacy left for future generations (Roseland, 2012, p.3). A big issue for urban areas in developed countries is that they have become less reliant on their surrounding areas for sustenance and are increasingly importing consumer goods, food, energy, water, and building material from distant sources (Allen, 2009). Waste is also being exported from urban areas to distant regions (Allen, 2009). • 32. Modern Society Is Unethical Using The Emulation Theory Aristotle argues that the pattern of status competition in American society is unethical using the emulation theory. According to Aristotle, humans are the most imitative of all creatures and status competition is a cycle of mutual emulation. Emulation is a pain which is caused by the presence of good things that are highly valued. How emulation works is that there is the person who is doing the emulation, the individual who is being emulated, and then relationship between the two. The second individual provides a model for the first individual, who then decides they are similar to the model. Humans do not emulate individuals who have something that is deemed undesirable, the idea is let them have it, I don t want it. Because the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Joneses are actually salesmen pretending to be a normal family while those around them crave the items they are selling and eventually putting themselves in a serious economic /emotional crisis. This is an example of what Aristotle means when he says emulation brings pain, because one of the characters, Frank, ends up committing suicide because he gave into status competition. He did not care about his wife s business, or the simple fact that he had bills and a mortgage to pay. Instead he kept buying things, much like the Baby Boomers, and worked his way into a debt that he could not get out of because he cared too much about his reputation and how popular he wanted to seem to his friends. The emulators, in the movie, are the individuals who set out to buy the items the family was selling. Aristotle also stated that some people are only concerned with keeping up with their neighbors, copying their every move. It becomes a life obsession, and that was the main idea of the movie. Aristotle believes in order to follow the mean and be rational, one must avoid excess or deficiency by asking themselves if they re emulating at the right times and places? Do you actually need to consume? Are you consuming the right amount of goods? How will my emulating affect myself or those around me? One of the bad habits I ve become accustomed to over the years is working myself to my breakpoint and not taking a chance to breathe. More than that I tend to keep busy way more often than I should be some simply over just trivial things. That is why I decided to choose the spiritual practice of Sabbath where I took one 24 hour period in my week and dedicated it to simply rest and rejuvenate and nothing more. Now by rest, I don t necessarily mean sleep, a lot of times it was just doing what brings me pleasure and replenishes me instead of exhausting myself, or giving to me, instead of taking from me. Although I have heard people talking about the Sabbath growing up multiple times, I have never heard it phrased like it was in this class: as a spiritual formative practice. That was when the Jews practiced Sabbath as commanded under the Mosaic Law, given to them when they were in the wilderness. Exodus 20:8 10 shares, Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Prior to this shift, the industry has been riddled with discrimination against many different individuals based on sex, gender, and race. While this still occurs today we have many companies and leaders making a push to diversify and include all the members of the gamingcommunity. Gabrielle Toledano is the chief talent officer at EA, also know at Electronic Arts, and she is one of the many leaders pushing for diversity and inclusion in our virtual spaces. Listed as one of Forbes most powerful women in 2008, Gabrielle has been on a career path intertwined with inclusion for many years. She originally started as an HR business partner with oracle in 1991, leading to a senior HR business partner position with the Microsoft Corporation in 1996. While she enjoyed this position and the people that she worked with, she didn t feel challenged nor did she feel that she had a clear and fast enough moving career path. As such she began to take calls from recruiters. This resulted in a call from Siebel systems with an offer of CHRO. She was concerned that her current position with in Microsoft left her under qualified for the position. There was a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I spent my time at Louisburg College running cross country and walked out of there with a Associates Degree in Business Administration. After graduating, I knew that student loans were going to be a toll and I also wanted to attend another university to gather a bachelor s degree. I wanted to please my father and myself for the dream I always had could help me pay for college. Presenting my father with a plan was the goal in accomplishing my dream and I knew he did not want his son to be in debt with student loans. Gathering the information was the start so I contacted an army recruiter to see how I was going to pay for college. He presented me with a student loan repayment program and also an incentive how I could pay for my bachelors and possibly masters. After he gave me the plan I presented it to my father. Again he was not for it. He told me he could let his son be buried in a pine box for trying to defend this nation. My father was adamant but what was the deciding factor was me letting him know I couldn t continue my education and I was going to be in debt. He then realized and told me, son you are a man for putting your body on the line to provide for yourself and get an education. I knew I had a winner then. • 41. The Authority Of Religious Elites In The 1640s Witch Hunts The Authority of Religious Elites in the 1640s Witch Hunts The large scale witch hunts that occurred from 1638 to 1651 gathered momentum via major happenings in the political, societal, and religious domains developing at the time. Individuals who had either political, religious or economic power in society, also known as elites, together had absolute control over the pursuit and prosecution of individuals who partook in witchcraft. The clergy played a crucial role in the witchcraft prosecutions and were slower than the state and localities to desert their beliefs in the reality of witches as the prosecution of witchcraft was, in their eyes, an effective tool to eradicate social deviance. Though local authorities and the Parliament did contribute to the witch hunts significantly, without the kirk of Scotlanddeclaring and encouraging this sanction on witchcraft, both other parties would not have taken the actions they ultimately did. This essay will provide a brief description of events that took place from 1638 to 1651 and then utilize evidence from a multitude of sources to argue that the religious elites were the most influential of these forces during the witchcraft prosecutions that occurred in the 1640s. Due to the Scots dissatisfaction with the current monarch, King Charles I, the National Covenant was formed by on February 28th in 1638 at Greyfrairs Kirk in Edinburgh. • 42. Summary Of Marrying Absurd In Marrying Absurd , Joan Didion illustrates the nonsensical circus that marriage in Las Vegas is. The city makes the ceremony of marriage out to be the clown at the circus, and there is no respect for it. Using Las Vegas and its dysfunctional behavior as its backdrop, Didion was able to cleverly ridicule marriageas an institution and the wedding industry as a whole. She was able to say that if marriage was allowed in the city where Dressing Rooms, Flowers, Rings , and other services were a common staple, then there was something wrong with the institution as a whole. Didion effectively argued that unrealistic expectations were just used as a cash cow for the wedding industry and the Strip chapels . Throughout the essay, Didion ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Analysis Of Writing Our Lives Ebrahim Ziba 10/16/14 English 101 Paper #2 Finding Rhetoric in Our Lives The commercial of my choice was the Old Spice ad that is advertising their new line of body wash that is advertised having odor block power. The commercial is made by old spice and has a lot of ethos, pathos, and logos throughout the commercial, and is very effective at all three. I think that the commercial works and gets straight to the point in a very short time. Its main goal is to sell and make money off their product that is said to keep you smelling god and stopping odor from coming off you. They use a very famous actor, Terry Crews, to tell you that the product works and he even shows how it blocks the odor, and it uses logos by giving off the time it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It demonstrates how he washes his body and it takes immediate effects in stopping the odor. Another instance of the commercial using ethos is how often the ad and all the diversity in each one being played everywhere on everything, which shows that they have a good feeling that people will see this and purchase the product from them as soon as possible. The brand of Old Spice already does have a good reputation and is one of the leading brands in men s health and cleanliness behind Axe brand. So it doesn t need as many appeals to ethos because they already have good credibility and most people know the name and will trust them. The uses of pathos is how he seems to be screaming at the audience which may seem to intimidate them into buying the old spice body wash. He seems over excited and is very big which may make you feel like if you don t buy it then he ll do something about it. There are a lot of different emotional appeals through this commercial that will affect many people in different emotional states while hearing the commercial. It is very effective and is the most predominately used rhetoric device used in the commercial. Another emotional response you feel would be happiness because the commercial is overall a comedic ad that wants to make you feel happy and make you feel like you can trust them and their product. They portray this by having him express his opinions on odor and why you ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 46. Fast Food And The Food Meal Essay A fast food meal may not be so simple after all considering the ingredients that go into a meal. We aren t fully aware of what all the ingredients are in our food. We just see either a short or a long list of words that is just scientific jargon to us. We do become more concerned of what we are eating if there is a long endless list of contents. One ingredient that we all know if high fructose corn syrup. There are high amounts of it in our fast foodwhich explains why we can get so addicted to fast food. Earlier I said most of what a fast food meal is comprised of is sugar, carbs, and sodium. Sugar and fat are the leading ingredients that give us an energy boost. They make energy dense foods which is what fast food is an energy dense food. Energy dense foods are inexpensive to produce. Pollan says one reason that obesity and diabetes become more prevalent the further down the socioeconomic scale you look is that the industrial food chain has made energy dense foods the cheapest foods in the market (107). Sugar is pretty cheap and it makes sense to price a meal at a low rate. We can t forget that most of a meal is also comprised of corn which make it cheaper too. Because they are inexpensive, their price isn t sky high which makes it ideal for low income families. They are able to afford a high calorie meal at a low price. This explains why obesity tends to be more prevalent in low income households. As we can see, the low price of fast food contributes to the weight gain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Semisolid Processing 2.1THE BEGINNING OF SEMISOLID PROCESSING Semisolid processing originates with the research at MIT on the viscosity behavior of tin/lead alloys during solidification, published by Spencer,Mehrabian, and Flemings in 1972.The original purpose was to examine the shear stress of semisolid structures with a view to shedding light on hot tearing mechanisms in solidifying alloys, but it was discovered that the process of shearing clearly altered the microstructure, changing the dendritic morphology of the solid into more spherical form that brought about a dramatic fall in shear stress and viscosity. This is of course the phenomenon of Thixotropy, well known to ceramicists and polymer scientists, but until then not observed in metallic systems. This discovery at MIT initiated an in depth study of thixotropy in alloys, and the awareness that stirred semisolid alloys could be injected as in die casting into molds with certain advantages: The controlled higher viscosity flow meant that less air ... Semi solid metal processing enables us to manufacture complicated shape components with near net wall, good mechanical properties and high dimension tolerance accuracy [34]. SSP has some advantages in comparison with conventional casting, such as decreasing the macrosegregation and solidification shrinkage and reducing forming temperature [35]. Because of the absence of the dendritic solid phase in the semi solid state, the alloy is easily shaped. The nondendritic microstructure contains solid phase globules suspended in the liquid phase [33, 36]. The main advantages and disadvantages of SSM, relative to die casting, have been summarized by Atkinson [37] to be as follows: Advantages of SSM: пѓ Energy efficiency: metal is not being held in the liquid state over long periods of ... Keyshawn Narrative Grumpy and already five precious minutes late for his afternoon snack, Keyshawn glanced quickly at the words in the column to the left and started to write simple sentences using those words: I piled up all the dishes in the dish rack. I mopped up all the water and I dried the floor. Imagine that you re a housekeeper , the spelling homework instructions had read. It was hard to tell who was more fed up with the assignment, the hungry Keyshawn, or I, his frustrated tutor. What do you say we make this a little more interesting? I asked. Keyshawn put his head down on his desk and groaned. I don t want to, I want my snack. C mon, I encouraged, just three more sentences! Make em count. Keyshawn picked up his pencil, started to write, and immediately erased his progress. His face lit up. He scribbled the next few sentences so quickly they were almost illegible: A small dinosaur popped out of the toilet and pushed down all the soap so I carried him to the forest. I rubbed his back so he fell asleep. I stacked blankets on him so he could keep warm. Then, I dusted off his little ashy head. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
