Research process and research data management. Many universities are looking at how they can better serve the needs of researchers. Ken Chad Consulting worked with the University of Westminster to look the needs and attitudes of researchers and admin staff in terms of research data management (RDM). The result led the University to look first at the whole lifecycle and workflows of research administration. This in turn led to the innovative, rapid development of a system to support researchers and admin staff. The Open Data report is a result of a year-long, co-conducted study between Elsevier and the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS), part of Leiden University, the Netherlands. The study is based on a complementary methods approach consisting of a quantitative analysis of bibliometric and publication data, a global survey of 1,200 researchers and three case studies including in-depth interviews with key individuals involved in data collection, analysis and deposition in the fields of soil science, human genetics and digital humanities.
There are many online and in-person courses available for librarians to learn about research data management, data analysis, and visualization, but after you have taken a course, how do you go about applying what you have learned? While it is possible to just start offering classes and consultations, your service will have a better chance of becoming relevant if you consider stakeholders and review your institutional environment. This lecture will give you some ideas to get started with data services at your institution.

Open and reproducible research practises are increasingly recognised as important to scientific integrity. However, there are numerous barriers including research culture - whether as a sector, institution or discipline - lack of training and professional incentives and funding of infrastructure.
On 26 May 2021 Dr Marlene Mengoni was one of two speakers at an event exploring barriers to open research.
Dr Marlene Mengoni is a member of the Institute of Medical & Biological Engineering (IMBE) at the University of Leeds and is interested in theoretical aspects of musculoskeletal tissues biomechanics with a fundamental computational engineering approach.
Speaking from an engineering perspective, Dr Mengoni discussed how the research culture at the University of Leeds can help to foster open research practices, throughout the research cycle, including embedding "open" in research and training.

With the enormous growth of data, retrieving information from the Web became more desirable
and even more challenging because of the Big Data issues (e.g. noise, corruption, bad
quality…etc.). Expert seeking, defined as returning a ranked list of expert researchers given a
topic, has been a real concern in the last 15 years. This kind of task comes in handy when
building scientific committees, requiring to identify the scholars’ experience to assign them the
most suitable roles in addition to other factors as well. Due to the fact the Web is drowning with
plenty of data, this opens up the opportunity to collect different kinds of expertise evidence. In
this paper, we propose an expert seeking approach with specifying the most desirable features
(i.e. criteria on which researcher’s evaluation is done) along with their estimation techniques.
We utilized some machine learning techniques in our system and we aim at verifying the
effectiveness of incorporating influential features that go beyond publications

A year ago, in April 2016, Leiden University’s Centre for
Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) and Elsevier
embarked on a project to investigate open data practices
at the workbench in academic research. Knowledge
knows no borders, so to understand open data practices
comprehensively the project has been framed from the
outset as a global study. That said, both the European
Union and the Dutch government have formulated the
transformation of the scientific system into an open
innovation system as a formal policy goal. At the time
we started the project, the Amsterdam Call for Action on
Open Science had just been published under the Dutch
presidency of the Council of the European Union. However,

Datasets are increasingly emerging as a ‘new currency’ in collection development. While purchasing models may in some ways mirror more traditional forms of electronic information, there are many unique considerations in the collection and acquisition of datasets. The purpose of this study is to determine the extent to which academic libraries have formalized dataset collection development policies and to highlight some of the key considerations in the development of such policies. The focus here is on commercially available datasets, rather than datasets produced at home institutions.

This afternoon event was held at the University of Sussex, Brighton on 5 March 2010 and was free and for early career researchers in all sciences, engineering and medicine (PhD students, post-docs or equivalent in first job).
The workshop discussed the process of peer review in journal publishing and explored the criticisms of the peer review process. What does peer review do for science? Does it detect fraud and misconduct? Will it illuminate good ideas or shut them down?

The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. This an elaboration of the AHRC’s definition of the research process, based around the defining of research questions, the specification of a research context (why are these qns important and how do they relate to what we already know or understand), the specifying of research methods, and the generation of research outputs So access to and dissemination of information are the lifeblood of the research process; and fundamental to the reasons why research is funded as a public good. And researchers are both producers and users of information; but they are on the whole little interested in exploiting IP in their own work; and worried about the consequences of others (from outside the research community) seeking to exploit their IP Aside 1 : there are tensions in public policy between the support of research as a public good, and many of the measures used by Govt of the success of the UK research base, which tend to focus on things such as patenting, licensing, spin-out companies etc. But some signs of increasing interest in knowledge transfer as distinct from exploitation Aside 2: there are issues about the definition (lack of) of research in copyright law, and the distinction in particular between commercial and non-commercial research. Not wholly in agreement with BA report here, since it seems to me that there is no real distinction in the doing of the research itself; rather, it is how the results of the research are exploited once the research has been done (focus on the post-hoc activity rather than the intention of the researcher in starting off the research)
