Researchers are heavy users of e-journals, with 98% of titles in institutions being used over a 4 month period and annual growth rates of 21.7%. However, per capita usage varies and the profile of journals used also differs. There are correlations between journal usage, research outputs, and outcomes. As research investment increases, the volume of publications grows at a rate of around 2.5% per year. Scholarly journals remain most important across disciplines, though many other forms of publication like book chapters, open access repositories, blogs, and forums are also considered valuable. There are several factors that universities consider regarding open access publication policies. These include disseminating research as part of their institutional purpose, obligations to funders who mandate open access, and different approaches to publication and dissemination of research. Universities also weigh the drivers of open access like funder mandates against potential inhibitors such as additional costs. Funding open access presents challenges as the costs shift from consumers to producers and there are questions around how to establish budgets to cover publication fees given other funding priorities. Universities must determine their level of involvement with issues like establishing policies, raising awareness, and setting up repositories.

Why students use university libraries and what they use them for

This doctoral thesis by Pablo Migliorini examines the creation and development of university-based companies using evidence from Spain. The thesis contains 5 chapters that study different aspects of university-based companies from macro, meso, and micro levels. The first chapter provides a literature review of over 300 publications on university-based companies and analyzes the evolution and impact of publications, authors, and journals in the field. The following chapters analyze factors influencing the creation and survival of university-based companies from both parent universities and individual founders.
Supporting Open Educational Practices (OEP) through Open Textbooks: A survey ...
Paper presented at Open Education Global 2019. The Hewlett funded UK Open Textbooks project (2017-2018) had two aims. First, to investigate awareness of open textbooks within UK Higher Education (HE). Second, to test two highly successful open textbook models of adoption (OpenStax; Open Textbook Network) to assess their transferability to the UK context. To better understand textbook use patterns and the issues faced by students and educators, UK Open Textbooks conducted an incentivised survey of UK educators in September 2018. This presentation will report on the findings of this survey which focused on awareness of open educational resources (OER), textbook use and rationale, awareness and use of open textbooks and open licensing.
The survey work carried out by UK Open Textbooks, and the experience of testing two methods of raising awareness and adoption through workshops and promotional activity, reveal a fertile ground for open textbook adoption with the potential to support a wide range of associated open educational practices. Our findings indicate that the same challenges are consistently experienced across the whole of the UK and indicate possible strategies for raising awareness and supporting pedagogical innovation and student access through the mainstream adoption of open textbooks.

The British Library conducted a survey of 600 readers in January/February 2015 to understand who uses the reading rooms and how. Key findings include:
1) Most readers were from higher education or conducting professional research. Over half were London-based.
2) Readers primarily used the reading rooms for academic works, research degrees, and personal interest. Printed books and journals remained the most used materials.
3) Dedicated reading rooms for specific disciplines remained important for many readers to have materials and support in one place. However, remote access to electronic resources was the most requested improvement.

Transitional agreements were developed in response to funder policy and institutional demand to constrain costs and facilitate funder compliance. They have since become the dominant model by which UK research outputs are made open access. In January 2023, Jisc instigated a critical review of TAs and the OA landscape to provide an evidence base to inform a conversation on the desired future state of research dissemination. This document summarizes the current status of open access to scholarship in Japan. UK researchers are becoming slightly more open in their data sharing practices over recent years. Younger researchers and those at earlier career stages are more likely to engage with open data sharing tools like blogs and wikis. However, many researchers remain reluctant to openly share their data due to concerns about intellectual property, inappropriate use, and lack of reward. Recommendations to promote open data practices include developing infrastructure and skills training, establishing policies on data sharing, and providing recognition and incentives for researchers who engage with open science principles.

Sense About Science held a workshop on peer review in collaboration with the Research Information Network, Vitae, Elsevier and the Voice of Young Science.
This afternoon event was held at the University of Sussex, Brighton on 5 March 2010 and was free and for early career researchers in all sciences, engineering and medicine (PhD students, post-docs or equivalent in first job).
The workshop discussed the process of peer review in journal publishing and explored the criticisms of the peer review process. What does peer review do for science? Does it detect fraud and misconduct? Will it illuminate good ideas or shut them down?
The RIN’s Liason and Partnerships Officer, Branwen Hide, spoke at the event on ‘The changing scholarly communications landscape: What does this mean for peer review?’

- So, £175bn for the system as a whole, the vast majority for the doing of research itself; just under £60bn (£58.9bn) for everything else, from publication to reading of journal articles Research costs covers that part of overall R&D investment as recorded by the OECD that is conducted by active researchers and authors who are part of what in the UK is called the research base (mainly in universities). So what we are trying to capture here is only that part of the investment in research that results in papers in journals.
