The topic of providing Open Educational Resources, OERs, as an alternative to costly textbooks for students in higher education is on the minds of educators, administrators, librarians, publishers, and faculty these days. All are eager to ease the cost burden of higher education by providing students with freely available, openly licensed learning materials, but each constituency faces specific barriers and has specific questions to be resolved. At Emporia State University, faculty, librarians, and administrators are at the beginning of an exploration of the advantages and disadvantages that are part and parcel of creating, adopting, storing, maintaining, and licensing OERs. A task force has been formed to "establish a baseline for current OER efforts at ESU and to initiate a process of discovery to evaluate resources and infrastructure necessary to enlarge our OER efforts beyond the current baseline" (OER Task Force charge). Some of the topics that the Task Force may consider are * Weighing the strengths and weaknesses of including OER as a strategic plan initiative; * Analyzing faculty work conditions within an OER environment; * Determining the need to adjust institutional intellectual property rights policies; * Assessing student attitudes toward OER as well as preferences for digital or print resources; * Exploring faculty incentives for assessing/adapting/authoring OER; * Assessing the financial impact of OER to the bookstore and the Memorial Union; * Developing an information campaign to educate faculty, students, and staff about OER; * Exploring software systems, like Intellus, that might facilitate OER access; * Cataloging ready-made resources, like Open Stax, for faculty availability. One thing that is clear is that the collaborations among ESU constituencies, among institutions of higher education in Kansas and the Midwest, and among educators, administrators, librarians, publishers, and faculty are necessary to the success of an OER project at ESU. In this presentation, I propose to present the experiences of the OER task force, particularly their collaborations with both internal and external stakeholders, as well as the results of their work as a case study. I will focus on sharing how collaborations with stakeholders influenced the process, the choices, and the outcomes of the work of the task force; particularly those that are transferable and may have benefits for other institutions of higher education. Strategic planning and delivery of services at the University of Auckland's Libraries and Learning Services (L&LS) is underpinned by institutional collaboration and consultation. L&LS continues to strengthen its specialist research support services with an enhanced focus on strategic partnerships. L&LS is the institutional owner of Research Outputs (Symplectic Elements), the system used by University of Auckland (UoA) researchers to record and manage their research publications and professional activities. Research Outputs is also a key data source for services that support UoA researchers increase their visibility, track and measure their research impact, and generate data for performance reviews. A reference group of senior academic and professional staff, chaired by the University Librarian, is a forum for strategic decision making on best practice use and development of Research Outputs. The UoA external facing university directory and academic profiles use a publication feed from Research Outputs and is one example of L&LS collaborating on an enterprise wide project to increase the visibility of researchers. L&LS actively contribute to several working groups including an initiative to promote ways to enhance academic reputation and profile, and increase citations. One outcome was a marked increase in deposits to the UoA research repository. A research impact publication service was launched by L&LS in 2014. The multi-faceted BiblioInformatics Service, developed with input from strategic partners and stakeholders, offers researchers consultations with librarians on how to track and maximise the impact of their research outputs and is supported by online guides. A self-service platform, drawing on Research Outputs as a data source, provides information such as h-index and top cited publications. To support strategic decision making the service also delivers benchmarking and collaboration reports to Senior Management on research and citation performance.

A presentation by Professor Simon Haslett at a Higher Education Aacdemy Wales Research-Teaching Nexus Action Set Meeting held at Aberystwyth University on 10th February 2011. Professor Haslett is Dean of the School of STEM at the University of Wales. In the presentation, Professor Haslett examines the ways in which research and teaching may be linked in academic practice in Higher Education. He attempts to unravel the various linkages through scholarship, research (both subject-based and pedagogic), and curriculum, and outlines the activity and contribution of the Higher Education Academy Research-Teaching Nexus Action Set in Wales. The presentation draws upon his recent experience as Director of the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching at the University of Wales, Newport, as a case study, and he also provides examples of research-teaching links from his own professional practice.

Creating a UK-wide network of LIS researchers

Presentation delivered at the Library Research Symposium. McMaster University, Canada, 3 November 2015. The aim of the Arts and Humanities Research Council funded Developing Research Excellence and Methods project, was to develop a formal UK-wide network of Library and Information Science (LIS) researchers (academic and practitioner). The project ran from January 2011 to August 2012, and was supported by the UK Library and Information Science Research Coalition. The initial successes of the DREaM project were reported in a paper that Hazel Hall co-authored with Alison Brettle and Charles Oppenheim and presented at QQML 2012. Three years later in summer 2015, Hall and her colleague Bruce Ryan conducted further research to explore any lasting impacts of the project. Those who attended three DREaM research methods workshops in 2011/12 were invited to complete a survey in June 2015. The survey questions focused on LIS work undertaken since the last DREaM workshop in April 2012. Respondents were asked to report on the use of the methods presented at the DREaM workshops; any new DREaM-inspired LIS research and publications, and their impacts; the influence of DREaM on individual career paths; and any on-going contact between those who developed relationships with one another over the course of the three workshops. Further data for the 2015 project – known as DREaM Again - were collected formally from focus groups and more informally through email contact with DREaM workshop participants. In this presentation the main findings of DREaM Again are discussed.

Sense About Science held a workshop on peer review in collaboration with the Research Information Network, Vitae, Elsevier and the Voice of Young Science. This afternoon event was held at the University of Sussex, Brighton on 5 March 2010 and was free and for early career researchers in all sciences, engineering and medicine (PhD students, post-docs or equivalent in ﬁrst job). The workshop discussed the process of peer review in journal publishing and explored the criticisms of the peer review process. What does peer review do for science? Does it detect fraud and misconduct? Will it illuminate good ideas or shut them down? The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence. The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth. Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration. The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority. Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages. Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024 Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error. Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials. This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
