Simmons LIS 489: Technology Foundations for Information Science
Social and Professional Aspects Final Presentation: Automation and Integrated Library Systems. Focuses on two different automation systems used by libraries.
Libraries are rapidly changing and expanding to web-based delivery of content and related access services to cater the information needs and expectations of their modern users.
One approach is to design and develop multi tired architectures that include an integration layer providing programme level services for user level applications such as a portal.
The library portal is a tool to organize information resources and services in a way that supports the users’ needs.
LIS professionals should be aware about portal technology, its applications in academics and usability of the portal which is based on effective content management system.
Open source software for implementation of union catalogueBeatrice Amollo
Adapting open source for a union catalogue in Kenya is not impossible. This is made feasible by the fact that there exist several successful union catalogs in the world. Of importance, is the agreement between the participating libraries. This is the hurdle that must be overcome before any progress is realized in this direction.
There are libraries in Kenya that have implemented open source ILS for long enough to provide the necessary expertise or input to help in the actual implementation. Koha seems to have gained much mileage in Kenya as observed earlier on. The experiences with it by the different libraries will come in handy when deciding on which software to adapt for the union catalogue.

Koha Live CD’s are useful tools for installation and learning purpose. Availability of Koha live CD is one of the reason that increased the popularity of Koha among library professionals. With the help of Koha Live CD, library professionals can try and install Koha without having much technical know how. It also saves considerable time for the installation of Koha software during training programmes.

Online libraries became essential source for both faculty and research members in order to obtain knowledge about different fields of sciences. Students all over the world are using for their researches the materials available on online libraries so that they can accomplish their tasks and day-to-day researches.
An e-library database is used to store information according to its users. The documents stored in those database locations are called media where they are books and journals.
The e-library must keep track of the status of each media item: its location, status, descriptive attributes, and cost for losses and late returns. Books will be identified by their ID. In order to allow multiple copies of the same book or journal, each media item will have a unique ID number.

This webinar is about the Open Source software that is available to supplement your library system, regardless of whether you are using an Open Source Library System like Koha or Evergreen or a proprietary system like Millennium, CARL, or Horizon.
Software that dramatically extends and expands the capabilities of your library system software fall into two main categories: discovery interface and metasearch. While other products (e.g. content management systems) may integrate with your ILS to some degree, we will focus our attention on discovery and metasearch tools, how they work and who is using them.
