INTRODUCTION
OCLC is the world’s largest, non profit, cooperative of
libraries. It facilitates library cooperation in cataloguing, inter-
library loan, virtual reference, digital archiving, and other
service. Host of the Dewey Decimal Classification and of the
world’s largest union catalog of library bibliographic data
(known as WorldCat). OCLC is also host to OCLC research
centre for libraries, archives, and other cultural heritage
institutions.
HISTORY
• Originally named the Ohio College Library Centre, OCLC
began in 1967 through a collaboration of Ohio University
President (Frederick G.Kilgour) ,vice president and Library
directors.
• The group first met on July 5, 1967 on the campus of the Ohio
state university to sign the articles of incorporation for the non
profit organization.
• The vision and thoughts came true with years and today OCLC
is connected to 30,000 plus libraries, archives and museums
from 107 plus countries around the world.
GOVERNANCE
Board of Trustees:-The OCLC is governed by comprising
of 15 Trustees members from academic, public, state and
national libraries. Board of Trustees have 4 year term.
 Six trustees from OCLC Global Council
 Nine trustees elected by the Board itself
 Four from the library community
 Five from fields outside librarianship.

PRODUCT AND SERVICES
OCLC WORLDCAT
• The service was started in 1971 with the addition of first
bibliographic to the OCLC online Union Catalog, by OCLC
staff at the Alden library at Ohio University. OCLC began the
“Open WorldCat”in 2003 with the pilot program. The web
based search facility available in 2006 by WorldCat.
• The collection of WorldCat 521 million Bibliographic records
in 483 language .

WorldShare
• OCLC WorldShare Interlibrary loan is a new service that will
replace WorldCat Resource Sharing as part of your existing
resource sharing subscription in 19 may 2014.
• The service centralizes workflows now managed in multiple
system, and provides new functionality that speeds fulfillment
of interlibrary loan request and save time for your staffs and
users.
• WorldShare metadata Collection Manager automatically
delivers WorldCat MARC records for all your electronic
materials.
LIBRARY MANAGEMENT
• OCLC provides in-house deployed and cloud-based library
management system to more than 9,000 libraries in United
states, Europe, Australia and Africa which have the
functionally of Acquisitions, circulation, inter-library loan and
cataloguing.
• Amlib is an Austrian based LMS which is implemented in
school, public and special libraries primarily in Australia,
Africa, the United kingdom and United states. The LMS is
completely web based with all modules.
ELECTRONIC COLLECTION
MANAGEMENT
 Ezproxy is a popular service which provide users with remote
based web access to licensed and subscription based content. It
is middleware solution that validates and authenticates library
patrons /users against local authentication system like IPs. The
service provides offsite access to licensed content, based on
the user’s authorisation at a physical remote location.
DIGITAL COLLECTION
MANAGEMENT
• CONTENTdm- It is digital collection management software
which handle the storage, management and delivery
of collection in any format and make these digital
collection available on the web to the users.
CATALOGUING AND METADATA
• Z39.50 Cataloguing: -It enables and provides Z39.50
compliant interface to the library through their local
cataloguing system. It help the libraries in searching and
retrieving records from World Cat for copy cataloguing.
 Accessions:-This service supplies digital/electronic list of
recently catalogued acquisition.
 Dewey Services:-OCLC provide world renowned
dynamic structure for the classification of library collection.
Dewey decimal Classification is provide online by OCLC.
CONCLUSION
• OCLC is always has been a worldwide library cooperative
which provides service and research to improve access to the
world’s information. It resource enables discovery of more
than 1.7 billion digital, electronic and physical resource in
library around the world through one step single search to both
WorldCat and the central index .
