The ASSURE Method: Teaching Holiday Traditions
Analyze Learners
• Twenty 4th
grade students. There are 11 girls and 9 boys, 2 Muslims, 3 Jewish, and 2
African Americans.
State Objectives
• Students will identify at least 5 holiday traditions at the end of the lesson with 95 %
accuracy.
• In small groups, students will conduct extensive research on one holiday tradition of their
choosing and present it to the class. The research collected must be 100% accurate. Each
group will research a different holiday tradition.
• Students will choose from the following resources/websites:
http://www.worldholidaytraditions.com, http://www.whychristmas.com/cultures/, and
http://www.msichicago.org/scrapbook/scrapbook_exhibits/catw2004/traditions/.
• When presenting their findings, students will either create a PowerPoint presentation or
use a poster board to display their information that contains no grammatical errors.
Select Methods, Media, and Materials
• Internet and a list of reliable sources
• Poster board
• Computer
• PowerPoint
• Printer
Stephanie Sullivan
• Coloring materials such as markers, colored pencils, rulers, and tape.
Utilize Media and Materials
• Students will use the materials listed above to create a presentation to display their
research. This will give students the opportunity to share what knowledge they found
with the rest of the class.
Require Learner Participation
• Students will be attentive when fellow classmates are presenting their findings. In order
to ensure students are paying attention, each student will be required to write three things
they learned from a presentation and turn it in at the end of the lesson.
Evaluate and Revise
• Each student will provide me with written feedback about the lesson such as what they
liked, what they didn’t like, what else did they want to do but weren’t able to.
• Students will participate in a group discussion regarding what they learned from the
presentations.
• Students will complete a short assignment where they complete one of the objectives by
naming at least 5 holiday traditions with 95% accuracy.

  • 1. Stephanie Sullivan The ASSURE Method: Teaching Holiday Traditions Analyze Learners • Twenty 4th grade students. There are 11 girls and 9 boys, 2 Muslims, 3 Jewish, and 2 African Americans. State Objectives • Students will identify at least 5 holiday traditions at the end of the lesson with 95 % accuracy. • In small groups, students will conduct extensive research on one holiday tradition of their choosing and present it to the class. The research collected must be 100% accurate. Each group will research a different holiday tradition. • Students will choose from the following resources/websites: http://www.worldholidaytraditions.com, http://www.whychristmas.com/cultures/, and http://www.msichicago.org/scrapbook/scrapbook_exhibits/catw2004/traditions/. • When presenting their findings, students will either create a PowerPoint presentation or use a poster board to display their information that contains no grammatical errors. Select Methods, Media, and Materials • Internet and a list of reliable sources • Poster board • Computer • PowerPoint • Printer

Utilize Media and Materials • Students will use the materials listed above to create a presentation to display their research. This will give students the opportunity to share what knowledge they found with the rest of the class. Require Learner Participation • Students will be attentive when fellow classmates are presenting their findings. In order to ensure students are paying attention, each student will be required to write three things they learned from a presentation and turn it in at the end of the lesson. Evaluate and Revise • Each student will provide me with written feedback about the lesson such as what they liked, what they didn’t like, what else did they want to do but weren’t able to. • Students will participate in a group discussion regarding what they learned from the presentations. • Students will complete a short assignment where they complete one of the objectives by naming at least 5 holiday traditions with 95% accuracy.
