Pachucos were Mexican American youths who developed a distinctive subculture in the 1930s-40s Southwest US, wearing zoot suits and their own dialect. Due to racism and marginalization, they were often associated with gangs. The zoot suit style originated in El Paso and spread to LA, where the Sleepy Lagoon murder case in 1942 led to the arrests and convictions of 12 Mexican American youth despite lack of evidence. The Sleepy Lagoon Defense Committee was formed to appeal the case. In 1943, riots erupted in LA as sailors attacked and stripped zoot suiters, with police failing to intervene. The riots targeted the Mexican American community.
