Modified chena cultivation involves using machines and technology to increase yields from traditional slash and burn agriculture. Farmers now use tractors, imported seeds, fertilizers and pesticides to cultivate one or two commercial crops rather than many varieties. This provides higher incomes for farmers. While it protects biodiversity by reducing the need to clear new forests, overuse of chemicals pollutes the environment and reduces soil quality by eliminating fallow periods between plantings.

Primary tillage like ploughing is used to open up land for crop production while secondary tillage implements such as disc harrows and cultivators are used for finer soil operations after primary tillage. Different tillage implements are made of materials suitable for their various components and functions.

Pigeon pea is an important pulse crop grown in India. It is rich in protein and iron. The major producing states are Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka. - 2. Traditional Chena Modified Chena Why? “Agriculture is not a life style anymore, now it is an enterprise….” As the other areas of agriculture, chena cultivation has become profitable enterprise due to market oriented economy. Willingness of farmers to have a good living standard. What are the modifications? More attention to use of new technical methodology to increase the yield of chena. Use machines to cut the forest. Tractors are used for land preparation. Imported seeds and chemical fertilizer are also used. After preparation of land, cultivate only one or wo crops as commercial crops.
- 3. All together what is the modified chena cultivation? What are the reasons for those modifications? Increased demand in the local market for chena products. Lack of family labor to carry out chena cultivation as a traditional system. Many facilities to use machines for chena cultivation such as chain saw, bush cutters, tractors, chemical spray machines etc. As a government policy a decision was taken to allow the fertilizer subsidy for all cultivation and to buy the chena products at a high price in the market.
- 4. Benefits The farmers gain a higher income from the one or two crops cultivated, rather than merely from paddy because there is a reasonably high price for these products from both the government & private sector. Farmers don’t shift from their chena plot annually to a new chena plot, because they try to develop the same land. That results in reduced slash new forest area for chena, therefore it is an opportunity to protect the bio-diversity. Adverse effect Reduces the natural soil fertility process because over 95% chena farmers cultivate the same chena plot every year without allowing for a fallow period. Pollution of water bodies & soil because over 95% chena farmers have used chemical fertilizers, herbicides & insecticides. Badly affects the fauna.
