Mir Nihal is the central character of the novel, a 62-year-old Muslim noble who believes armed revolution is needed to liberate India from British rule. His younger son Asghar prefers Western culture but finds life unsatisfying. Begum Nihal, Mir Nihal's wife, tries to convince him to allow Asghar to marry Bilqeece, a low-class religious girl. Babban Jan was a dancer Mir Nihal loved, whose death left him lonely. Bilqeece cannot impress Asghar and suffers from his inattention after their arranged marriage.
