Matthew Arnold (24 December 1822 – 15 April 1888) was an English poet and cultural critic who worked as an inspector of schools. He was the son of Thomas Arnold, the famed headmaster of Rugby School, and brother to both Tom Arnold, literary professor, and William Delafield Arnold, novelist and colonial administrator.
During this time Arnold wrote the bulk of his most famous critical works, Essays in Criticism (1865) and Culture and Anarchy (1869), in which he sets forth ideas that greatly reflect the predominant values of the Victorian era.

World Culture and Gender Roles
Gender roles have defined the freedoms of women throughout the history of the world and are shaped by the culture, religion, and traditions of many civilizations. Throughout this course, gender roles have been explored throughout many societies, particularly in India, Egypt, and Japan as shown in Mrs. Dutta Writes A Letter, Another Evening at the Club, and The Pan, The Pot, The Fire I Have Before Me. Although all these works occur in different regions on the globe and during different time periods, they all have one thing in common: the theme of gender inequality.
Feminism is the term that is used to describe the belief that men and women should be treated the same and have equal rights (Caprino). Throughout history, women in various cultures have slowly narrowed the gap between the separation of men and women’s rights. Gender roles are defined by culture more than by physical attributes and intelligence. As shown in each of the short stories mentioned, the treatment of women in society have not always been fair.
Traditional gender roles in Indian culture is exemplified through Mrs. Dutta in, Mrs. Dutta Writes a Letter. She is a traditional woman from India who leaves her country to come to America after her husband dies. Throughout the story, the reader becomes aware of her struggle against coping with the less strict gender roles in America. Indian culture does not necessarily have respect for women as individuals, but as caretakers. They oversee the duties around the household, such as cooking, cleaning, and taking care of children. The men in India, on the other hand, are more respected based on their accomplishments and achievements (Bradely). Religion is also another factor that contributes to the unequal treatment of the sexes in India. In Hinduism, it is believed that women should play a secondary role, meaning she has a limited amount of freedom and is always subject to a male (Rodrigues). For example, as a child, the girl is subject to her father, then as she ages, she is subject to her husband, or in Mrs. Dutta’s case her son since her husband died. This can also be related to the cast system that is present in India and how their entire culture is based off different levels in society. Overall, traditional Indian culture is shown to be misogynistic and heavily reliant on the women to take care of the household.
Egyptian culture is exemplified in the short story, Another Evening at the Club. This story describes a woman in an arranged marriage who is subject to her husband because he is wealthy, highly respected, and takes care of her family. Ultimately, she is trapped in order to have a “good” life and support herself and her family. Egyptian culture is affected by religion, cultural values, social class, and location, meaning urban or rural. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.

Feroza Ginwalla, a pampered, protected 16-year-old Pakistani girl, is sent to America by her parents,
who are alarmed by the fundamentalism overtaking Pakistan — and their daughter. Hoping that a few months
with her uncle, an MIT grad student, will soften the girl’s rigid thinking, they get more than they bargained for:
Feroza, enthralled by American culture and her new freedom, insists on staying. A bargain is struck, allowing
Feroza to attend college with the understanding that she will return home and marry well. As a student in a
small western town, Feroza’s perceptions of America, her homeland, and herself begin to alter. When she falls
in love with and wants to marry a Jewish American, her family is aghast. Feroza realizes just how far she has
come — and wonders how much further she can go. This delightful coming-of-age novel is both remarkably
funny and a remarkably acute portrayal of America as seen through the eyes of a perceptive young immigrant.
In ‘An American Brat’, Bapsi Sidhwa seems to be more interested in exploring
the horizons of contrast and comparison of Pakistani and American civilizations. For the sake of comparison,
Sidhwa has used basically two characters e.g. Protagonist – Feroza and her uncle Manek. This theme is also
highlighted in the short stay of Zareen in ‘New World’. In order to understand the comparison drawn by
Sidhwa, we must analyse the characteristics of both civilizations.
The Role of culture in Society:
Literature is a subsystem of a give culture. Minority discourse is characterized by an urge to adapt
and assimilate. It is also characterized by a culture of protest and resistance. “Culture is not only organizational
Principle holding together the members of a community; it is also a means of establishing its separateness from
resistance to other communities”. T.S Eliot maintains that there are 3 modes of cultural studies, as in:
1) The Culture of individual that is dependent upon the culture of a group or a class.
2) The Culture of group is dependent upon the culture of whole society to which that class belongs.
3) The Culture of whole society that depends upon the culture of that state or region.
This novel basically deals with the intercultural themes. An American Brat is the story of a young girl, Feroza,
whose journey through three cultures-her own community Parsi Culture, her country Pakistan’s Islamic Culture
and the Western culture of America. In this narrative, the West is depicted as a set of values in conflict with the
value system of East. Here the conflict between two cultures is discernible not only on the social plane but also
on the personal level leading to a quest for identity. Bapsi Sidhwa evinces a keen interest in the interaction of
two cultures that exist side by side: Feroza is caught between conservatism, which is an offshoot of the rising
wave of fundamentalism in Pakistan and progressive liberalism for which her mother Zareen stands.
Encroachment of the Islamic culture throughout Pakistan:
The novel is set partly in Pakistan and partly in the USA. The time is the
late seventies. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto is in jail and Islamic fundamentalism is growing in Pakistan. Therefore,
Feroza‟s parents think that she should be saved from being further influenced by the Islamic orthodoxy. Her
mother Zareen is perturbed, because Feroza is becoming more and more backward, every day. Zareen says:
“I went to bring Feroza from school today. I was chatting with mother
Superior ... In the car, she said: “Mummy, please don‟t come to school dressed like that.” She objected to my
sleeveless sari blouse! Really, this narrow-minded attitude touted by General Zia is infecting her, too. I told her:
“Look, “Were Parsis, everybody knows we dress differently.”
Feroza‟s journey to America serves the novel in a way that It is her journey towards self-
4. discovery. Feroza‟s journey to self-awareness begins with her flight to America; practically it turns out to be a
journey from innocence to experience. The flight of the plane symbolizes the shift in culture and tradition.
Consequently, Feroza feels a sudden gravitational pull.
The humiliating mistrust that meets her at the immigration counter further shocks her solid sheath of dignity and
pushes her down. She screams: “To hell with you and your damn country. I‟ll go back." It shows the contrast
between two opposite cultures.
Homelessness and Struggle for Identity in the New Land:
The novel dwells on the motif of expatriation dealt with very extensively
by Bharati Mukherjee in her novel Jasmine, the story of an Indian immigrant‟s encounter with the new world
and her transformation as she gradually imbibes the new culture. For Sidhwa, the multi- cultural situation is not
only a theme but also a mode of perception. The clash of cultures and the need for adaptation are an integral
part of the diasporic experience. Like Feroza, Mukherjee‟s protagonist Jane in Jasmine leaves her own culture
and enters another which result in a cultural uprooting. Both the writers differ radically but both are expatriate
novelists. Sidhwa‟s roots continue to exist in Pakistan.
Feroza rises above the restraints and confines of the patriarchal Parsi society in Pakistan, and dares to question
and revolt against the tradition that bound her to her community. She succumbs to the charms of America, and
enrolls in a University, where she comes to terms with the American life style, by the help of her roommate
friend, Jo. The shy and conservative Feroza turns into a confident and self-assertive girl acts, talks and dresses
like an Amrican girl, learns to drive and shed her inhibitions to drink and dance with her fellow friends. All
Parsi customs are blown to dust within some days by Feroza.
PakistaniCulture
Inter-faith Marriage
In An American Brat, there is an ironic exposure of the Parsi attitude to inter-faith marriage.
Sidhwa has explained a very different type of the experience through Feroza‟s character. She finds Jo‟s parents
the Millers, understanding and they are not meddling in their children‟s affairs or imposing restrictions yet
remaining closely associated with them. She remembers her own family. Her parents, aunts and uncles, expect
unquestioning obedience on certain matters, like relationship between boys and girls and view with
consternation any straying from established path. When she comes to know that the children have been farmed
out by the country for a fee. Feroza becomes aware of another cultural difference between her country.
The Minority Culture in Crisis
Bapsi Sidhwa has presented that the Parsi‟s have a distinct culture and
within it there are divergent cultural mores. These minority people are found preserving their culture at every
moment. Bapsi Sidhwa has taken up the issue of the preservation of minority culture in her novels. The basic
conviction that every Parsi must cling to goes thus: Clean Thoughts, Right Words and Noble Deeds. These
values stressed in Zoroastrianism influence the daily life of the Zoroastrians. The prayer called Ashem Vohu
means: “Truth is the greatest virtue.” Then come charity, purity etc.
The Cultural Conflict between the Jews and the Parse’s:
Bapsi Sidhwa has discussed theme of love, marriage and the consequent complex
issues. When the protagonist expresses her thought about marriage to her uncle Manek, she tells him about
David despite his Jewish is origin, she has a mind to marry. Manek says thoughtfully: “It all seems wonderful
now, but marriage is something else, our cultures are very different. Of course, I‟m not saying it can‟t work, but

Through the novel Sidhwa has tried to expose the discriminatory aspects of the laws of the Parsi community
showing gender bias towards women. While men in Zoroastrianism are allowed to marry outside their
community and can retain their right to freely practice their faith. The same law does not apply to Parsi
women. If a Parsi girl marries a non-Parsi, she commits a cultural suicide, for the act bans her entry into
their Fire temple and is denied all religious rites. Her letter to her family, to seek permission from her
parents to marry David, an American Jew and the man of her heart, causes flutter in the family. It is an
attack on the Parsi culture. Her family in Pakistan is both agitated and shocked. Zareen flies to Denver to
dissuade Feroza from taking a step that would lead to her being ex-communicated and expelled from the
faith. The parents are also concerned that such a marriage would bring shame upon the family‟s honour.
The family‟s opposition to Feroza‟s impending marriage represents the predominant traditional view of the
Parsi community to such inter- community marriage.
An American Brat has been noted for its examination of cultural conflicts. Sidhwa is also called a post-
colonial feminist writer depicting issues like cultural differences and the place of women in Indian and
Pakistani society.
Disintegration of Self and the Society
Self-realization is a very strong trait of Feroza‟s character. Feroza, in
spite of enormous pressure at her home, becomes American. Thus, Sidhwa‟s women are strong-willed,
assertive, and courageous. They resolve their crisis in their own way. Speaking about man‟s quest for
happiness. Bertrand Russell observes:
“All happiness depends upon some kind of disintegration within the self through lack of coordination
between the conscious and unconscious mind; there is lack of integration between the self and society
where the two are not knit together by the force of objective interests and affections... Joy is to be found.”
In Feroza, there is such a lack of integration between the self and society: However, she achieves the fruitful
fusion of heart and mind emphasized by Russell and thus resolves the moral crisis in her life. Feroza‟s
mental turmoil typifies the predicament of the modern multicultural society. She is surer of herself and her
choices. She also understands that no one can take away her religious beliefs. An American Brat is of
course, a powerful and moving tale story of a Parsi family and presents also the heart-rending real and
intimate accounts of cultural, traditional norms of the Parsi community. So, Sidhwa, all through the novel,
presents the cultural dilemma of the inclination to move beyond the customary boundaries on the one hand
and their longing back for the Parsi tradition on the other.
Family Structure and Parental Order:
In Pakistani civilization family structures are very strong and parental orders cannot
be denied. Even Zareen has to answer her mother when she decided to send her daughter to America
Kuttibai asked her in satirical tone.
Strong Religious and Moral Institution:
Religion and morality are these institutions which cannot be questioned in
Pakistani civilization. One cannot compromise on religion and moral values in Pakistan. Feroza was unable
to marry according to her happiness because of her religious restrictions. David’s parents can permit him to
marry outside their religion but Zareen is horrified with the thought that Feroza will marry any one other
than Parsee.
Economic Dependence of Women
In Pakistani set up women are completely dependent on men not only economically, but also emotionally
and psychologically. In the introductory chapter, Sidhwa used ‘high heels’ as a symbol ofquest of men to
become equal. She writes about Zareen:“Her high-heeled slippers clicking determinedly beneath the hem
of the printed silk caftan she usually wore in the house, Zareen followed her husband into the bedroom.
She always wore high heels, "to measure up to my husband," and removed them only when she got into
bed or stepped into her bath.”
6. Secularism:
AmericanCivilization
Americans are more tolerant in the case of religion. They think religion as a personal matter of
everyone. David’s parents feel nothing bad about their son marrying a girl outside their religion. But Zareen
and Cyrus cannot tolerate this decision and Zareen has to fly to America in order to intervene the decision.
Independence:
In the character of Jo, Sidhwa has shown the independence of American girls. While Feroza was
dependent on her parents and for sometimes on her uncle Manek. But Manek taught her to be independent.
All American characters are free and independent to take their own decisions as opposed to those of
Pakistani culture where women are still dependent and unable to take their decisions.
Family Structure
American family setup is absolutely shattered and broken. Children are supposed to live alone and
independently. While old parents live separately and have their own activities. This characteristic of
American family system of Jo where parents run their own restaurants while their sons and daughters used to
live separately.
Zero Interference
Everyone is free to take decision. There is no interference of any one into the decisions taken
by American people. They not even let the religion or moral values to interfere in their personal matters.
David needs no permission from his parents or religious scholars while Feroza needs to take permission on
every level. But in the end, she was independent enough to take her own decisions.
The cross-cultural effects on Feroza:
The cross-cultural effects on Feroza were that she became independent, obsessed, powerful,
experienced, confident and secular. There are a lot many effects on Feroza’ mind set after experiencing the
two contrasting sets of civilizations. Her relation with David and her liberties with him are ample proof of
her mental advancement
Linguistic Changes
When she first got change to have conversation with ordinary people, they thought her very
artificial because of her accent and word choice. Jo helped her a lot in improving her pronunciation and made
her speak in an accent nearer to the native Americans.
Conclusion:
By analyzing various characters in Bapsi Sidhwa‘s novels we can say that she is one of the
distinguished postcolonial feminist writer who provides the strength to the voiceless to have their own voice. By
creating such strong, feminist characters, she is able to portray the nature of women where they do not want to
lose their cultural identity but at the same time do not want to get oppressed also for following irrational and
more or less redundant cultural norms. She makes a valid point that one can’t judge an individual without
even knowing their background in its totality.
