English Vowels
All vowel sounds share some articulatory properties. Unlike consonants,
vowels are produced with no significant obstruction of air that flows from the lungs.
They are made with the vocal tract more open than when it is used to produce
consonants. Moreover, the vibration of the vocal folds is the sound source for
vowels, so vowels are usually voiced. The quality of a vowel depends on the
movement and shape of the vocal tract as air passes through (Fromkin et al.
2007). For instance, certain part of the tongue is raised or lowered, and the lips are
spread or rounded when a vowel is produced.
