Cesar Chavez was born in 1927 in Arizona and grew up in a family that lost their home and land during the Great Depression. He attended over 37 schools by the time he graduated 8th grade as his family moved frequently to work on farms in California. Chavez went on to create the United Farm Workers Organization to fight for better wages and living conditions for farm workers. He led non-violent protests like marches and fastings, including one that lasted 36 days. Chavez died in 1993 at age 66 and continues to be honored for his legacy, with a national day of service proclaimed in his name each March 31st.
