Celts or Romans?
The Celts
They lived in huts
They didn’t have
main roads.
They didn’t have a
writing system.
They didn’t have a
governor, they had
chiefs.
People were not so
clean.
Amphitheaters
didn’t exist.
They had villages.
They were more
primitive.
They were fierce
warriors.
The Romans
They were more
developed.
They built main
roads.
They had a
disciplined army.
They had an
emperor.
They lived in
houses.
They had fun in the
amphitheatres they
built.
People were
cleaner and
healthier.
The most luxurious
houses had central
heating.
They had a writing
system.
Hadrian’s Wall
The Romans beat English tribes but they
couldn’t beat the Scots. The Emperor at that
time was Hadrian and he decided to protect
England by keeping away the Scots.
He asked his soldiers to build a wall from one
side of England to the other. After it was built,
the Roman army lived in forts near the wall to
defend the Empire.
Roman Legacy
• Road system and navigable onland waterways which
enabled cargoes to move inland.
• Drainage of the Fens created a complex system of
natural rivers and canals, and much still exists.
• They introduced species of fruit and vegetables to
make their diets healthier.
• Used a lot of land for farming.
• They built 50 towns, which are now modern towns
and cities.
• Built the Baths where people used to go to relax.
Now you can visit them but you can not use them.
• They went to theatres which they built to watch
sporting events such as wrestling, circuses and
gladiator fighting.
• They built big homes. These had central heating,
were grouped around a courtyard and important
rooms had floors covered with mosaic.
• The languages of modern Italian, Spanish,
Portuguese, French and Romanian derive from
Latin directly.
