This document summarizes research analyzing polarization and communication networks on Hong Kong Facebook pages during the 2014 Umbrella Revolution. The researchers identified six communities within the Facebook sharing network, including a giant component focused on news/memes, an activists community, and two pro-Beijing communities. They found the activists community's activities correlated the most with fluctuations in Chief Executive CY Leung's approval ratings, suggesting influence over public opinion. The researchers are working to better analyze long-term relationships and improve their sentiment analysis tools for these social media pages.
