2. My original script was
analysed from a live feed
and I am unable to find a
repeat of the video.
So, for this presentation I
will be analysing a
different news broadcast.
3. The two C&C used here are: Studio news readers and Mode of address.
Here we have a screen grab of a studio news reader. She summarises the main headlines
with a clear voice and welcomes the viewers by saying “Good evening and welcome to
the BBC News” while staring down the camera to grab our attention and keep an equal
relationship between the viewer and herself. This shows she has good communication
skills and follows the basic fundamental rule of mode of address.
Her appearance is that of a typical newsreader, neat haircut and is wearing a smart
dress to look respectable and smart. Her position is to the of the screen showing the
graphic (BBC NEWS). This is done because she goes later to explain the main headline
while relevant images slowing play on the screen behind her to give the audience a
visual understanding as well as a spoken one. The lighting is also very smooth, making
her skin look softer and her face overall, look brighter.
4. The two C&C being used here are: Actuality Footage and Report Structure
This is a screen grab of actuality footage from the chemical attack in Syria. The producers
Decide to show a montage of people affected by the chemical attack before switching to
The White House and what they are going to do about it. The actuality footage is used here
yet again to the audience of visual understanding of what‟s going on and to bring forth a
emotional response from them. The footage also added credibility to the V/O.
The V/O talks about the victims while the footage of the victims is playing and then subtlety
changes the topic for the next transition of video.
5. The C&C used here are/is: Contributor
Here we have a contributor/expert. The camera angle is set at a MCU to show he is the main
subject at the moment and there is also a text graphic below his neck, telling the audience
what his name is and what‟s his job.
In this particular scene, the contributor is someone who has in-depth knowledge of the
situation
and is providing the audience with a professional opinion. This then gives the story a bit more
backbone or credibility.
6. The two C&C used are: Link to Studio and Studio News Presenter
In this screenshot, we have the transition between two studios, The Broadcasting
Centre in Central London to another studio in Westminster. In the scene we just
have a political correspondent providing additional information to the audience
who may find useful to know.
He also follows the visual code of a Studio News Reader even though he isn‟t. He
has a neat haircut and is wearing a smart suit to look respectable and smart. He is
positioned in the middle of the screen to show his importance to the current
scene. The background is also tinted in black so it doesn‟t dominate him. The
lighting is also used here on his body make him stand out against the dark
background.
7. The two C&C used here are: Field Reporters and Mode of Address
This particular scene has a lot MES to talk about. First, the set he is reporting from is a
hospital, which is relevant to the story he is explaining. Next, his attire. His top button is
undone showing he isn‟t too concerned with looking super-smart and wants to show off his
relaxed persona. Third, positioning. He doesn‟t stay in one spot when he is talking, he walks
from one to another room then stops to finish his explanation to they can move to the next
„segment‟ of the story. Finally, he does a lot s subtle hand gestures. He shakes his hands up
and down several times but I do not know why, most likely it was out of habit. He also
doesn‟t stop staring straight down the camera which shows he also has good communication
skills and wants to stay on equal level with the audience.
