This document provides guidelines for cataloging charts and other graphic materials in a library collection. It defines different types of charts and how they should be organized and stored. Details are given on how to record physical descriptions of charts, including dimensions and number of sheets. Examples are provided of MARC catalog records for wall charts and organizational charts. Key information on the items, such as title, creator, date, physical description and summary, are included in the records.

2. Chart
• A sheet of information arranged in tabular or
graphic form produced on an opaque backing.
Charts, wall charts, and flip charts
are included under this heading and
designated by the term “chart.”
Charts may be organized as ephemeral
materials in a vertical file. Items of
permanent value to the collection should be
completely catalogued for their respective
use.
Sources of information
The container is preferred to the accompanying
data.

3. Physical description area
Extent of item. List the number of charts, flip
charts, or wall charts. (1 chart, 5 charts)
Flip charts. List in parentheses the number
or approximate number of sheets if opaque
or the number of overlays if transparent. 1

Other physical details. If appropriate, list
double sided for charts and flip charts. (1
flip chart (37 sheets): double sided)
Dimensions. Height x width are listed in
centimeters. If appropriate, height x width
when folded are listed also. 23 x 31 cm., folded
to 31 x 41 cm. in descriptive case 32 x 42 cm.
