This 12-year-old girl developed a fever and rash on her back after walking through tall grass where she had horseback riding lessons. She was diagnosed with Lyme disease caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria. Her history of being in an area with ticks and exposure to horses suggested she was infected through a tick bite. Lyme disease is transmitted through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks and causes a characteristic rash and flu-like symptoms in its early stage.
