Appalshop began in 1969 as a War on Poverty project to equip young people in Appalachia with job skills but has grown to become a nationally recognized media center focused on film, video, literature, theater and live performances based in Whitesburg, KY. The Traditional Music Project at Appalshop aims to support traditional Appalachian music, storytelling, and dance through radio broadcasts, concerts, festivals, jams, dances, workshops and working with visiting masters. Funding comes from private foundations like the Ford Foundation and Rockefeller Foundation as well as public funders like the Kentucky Arts Council, Kentucky Historical Society and various government agencies.
