Citrullus vulgaris, Citrullus lanatus
Soil and Climate:
Dry, humid and sunny place requires for good cultivation. Rains and high humid conditions limits yields. it never tolerates cold. It can tolerate dry and wet temperature well.
Optimum temperature: 25-30 C
At ripening stage huge long sunlight are needed for sweetness.
Soil: Fertile loamy to sandy loam soil is perfect for cultivation. pH- 5-6.8

4. • Common Name: Carrot
• SC. name: Daucus carota
• Family: umbelliferae
• Introduction: It has Vit-A, Ca, Fe, P, CHO. It can
be stored for 6 month without losing its
nutritional status.
• Origin: Afghanistan. It distributed in West Asia
and Europe. Nowadays, It can be found
everywhere.
Carrot
5. Climate & Soil:
• Grows well in cool weather but can tolerate warm weather.
For good yield, 10-25 C is optimum.
• Rain at seedling stage is detrimental but not for mature
plant. Deep loamy soil is the best for it.
• The quality root of carrot cab be affected by temperature
and condition of soil.
• High temperature and humid conditions in soil can create
hollow in root but attains better long shape and good deep
color in cooler weather.
• Root grows well in deep loose loamy soil but can be short,
rough discoloration and delay in coloration in clay or
compact soil.
• Low pH affects yield
6. • Cultivars:
• There are no registered varieties in our country.
Popular cultivars in Bangladesh are Royal cross,
Korel cross, Kinko satine Roayel, Kuroda and
Scarlet Nantes etc.
• Propagation: By direct seeding
• Seed rate: 3-4 kg/ha
• Land preparation: 20-25 cm Deep and 4/5 times
ploughing, Loose soil are good for carrot root.
7. Sowing:
• In November. Sowing can be done on Late October to December
• Early: September to October
• Method of sowing:
• Plough well. 25-30
• Row to row: 20-25 cm
• Seeds are small so better to add ash or loose soil. Thinning should
be done after germinating seedlings and plant to plant distance 6-
7cm. light irrigation with pesticides can minimize red ant attack.
• Seed soaking:
• Quick germination enhance by 24 hours soaking of before sowing.

10. • Fertlization:
• Cowdung/Vermicompost/ACI polly Joibo:
• Cowdung: 10 t/ha
• Vermicompost: 3 t/ha
• Compost: 350-400kg/ha
• Urea: 200kg, 100kg at the time of land preparation,
after 10-12days of germination- 50 kg, after 35-40
days-rest 50 kgs
• TSP- 150kg, whole at land preparation
• MP- 200kg, 100kg at the time of land preparation, after
35-40 days of germination rest 100 kg top dressed
11. • Irrigation:
• Light irrigation after sowing, at 7 days time of
germination one more irrigation encourages good
germination. Then examining the soil moisture,
irrigation at 10-12 days interval is better.
• Thinning:
• After germination and hardened, thinning should
be done keeping the plant to plant distance of 6-
7cm.
13. • Pest & diseases:
• Less attack found as underground. Leaf
hoppers transmit yellow viruses, create curling
of young leaves. Malformation of stems and
lvs occur and plants become bushy.
Biopesticides can be applied; Rogor 40 EC
2ml/Liter water can minimize the infestation.
• Infested plant should be uprooted
• Drainage and GAP should be followed
15. • Harvesting: After 90 days of sowing harvesting
can be start but good yield can be found after
100 days. For matured and qualitative root
100-125 days may be needed.
• Yield: 20-25 t/ha depending on the
management.
