The carotid triangle is an anatomical region bounded by the sternocleidomastoid muscle posteriorly, the inferior belly of the omohyoid muscle superiorly, and the superior belly of the omohyoid muscle inferiorly. It contains major blood vessels like the common carotid artery, internal jugular vein, and nerves like the vagus nerve. The common carotid artery divides into the external and internal carotid arteries at the level of the fourth cervical vertebra. Other structures passing through the carotid triangle include the spinal accessory nerve, hypoglossal nerve, and cervical sympathetic chain.
