2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

3. Anatomists use the term triangles of the neck to
describe the divisions created by the major muscles in
the region.
The side of the neck presents a somewhat quadrilateral
outline, limited, above, by the lower border of the body
of the mandible, and an imaginary line extending from
the angle of the mandible to the mastoid process;
below, by the upper border of the clavicle; in front, by
the middle line of the neck; behind, by the anterior
margin of the Trapezius.

5. ANATOMICAL FEATURES OF NECK
NECK CONSISTS OF FOLLOWING LAYER:-
Skin
Superficial fascia
Loose connective tissue + Platysma
Deep fascia of neck (Deep cervical fascia)
i) Investing layer
ii) Pretracheal layer
iii) Prevertebral layer

8. This neck is subdivided into two large triangles by the
Sternocleidomastoid, which passes obliquely across
the neck, from the sternum and clavicle below, to the
mastoid process and occipital bone above.
The triangular space in front of this muscle is called
the Anterior triangle of the neck; and that behind it,
the Posterior triangle of the neck.

11. Subdivisions:
I- Suprahyoid region – contains:
A. Submental triangle
B. Submandibular triangle
II- Infrahyoid region – contains:
A. Carotid triangle
B. Muscular triangle

12. Suprahyoid Region (Suprahyoid muscles)
Digastric (anterior and posterior bellies)
Stylohyoid – from styloid process to hyoid bone
Geniohyoid – from inferior genial tubercles of
mandible to hyoid bone
Mylohyoid – from mylohyoid line of mandible to
hyoid bone. It forms the floor of the mouth.
Nerve supply:
Anterior belly of digastric + Mylohyoid –
nerve to mylohyoid of the inferior alveolar
nerve from the mandibular branch of CN V
Posterior belly of digastric + Stylohyoid – CN

13. SUBMENTAL TRIANGLE
The submental triangle is
located between the two
anterior digastric muscles
(abd) superior to the hyoid
bone, and the midline of the
neck, Floor is formed by the
mylohyoid muscle
Structures found here are the
submental lymph node's that
drain the floor of the mouth

14. – A single triangle inferior to the mandible
Boundaries:
• Laterally – Rt. and Lt. anterior bellies of
digastric muscle
• Base – hyoid bone
• Apex – symphysis menti
• Floor – Rt. and Lt. mylohyoid muscles that
meet in a midline fibrous raphe

15. The mylohyoid muscle (mh) arise from the body of the
hyoid bone and insert into the mylohyoid line of the
inside of the mandible. This muscle aids in swallowing
and in depressing the mandible.
Anterior jugular veins: Lying in the midline,
running from the submental triangle, they pierce the
deep fascia above manubrium. They pass between the
posterior border of the Sternocleidomastoid muscle
and the upper border of the clavicle to drain into the
external jugular veins in the posterior triangle of the
neck.

16. Submandibular (Digastric) Triangle:
It between the posterior and anterior bellies of the
digastric muscle and inferior border of the mandible.
Its floor is formed by the mylohyoid, hyoglossus and
middle constrictor muscles.
Continuous with the fossa for the parotid gland
Mylohyoid muscle lies superior to the anterior belly
of the digastric
Forms a sling passing from side to side from its
attachment to the internal surface of the mandible
(mylohyoid line)
www.indiandentalacademy.com
17. Forms the floor of mouth: It is attached from the
mylohyoid line to the superior aspect of body of
hyoid bone and the midline raphé.
Around the free edge of this muscle lies the duct of
submandibular salivary gland which occupies a
significant part of the triangle
Associated with the anterior belly of digastric, &

ii) Thyroid and parathyroid glands.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
22. CAROTID TRIANGLE:
It lies between the posterior belly of the digastric,
superior belly of the omohyoid and deep to the
sternocleidomastoid muscle. As the vascular area of
the neck, it is most noted for the carotid sheath and
its contents :
1. Common Carotid Artery .
2. Internal Jugular Vein .
3. Vagus N.
Internal Jugular Vein collects blood from the brain,
face and neck and is usually the largest vein in the
neck.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
24. The Common Carotid Artery arises in the base of the
neck from the brachiocephalic artery on the right side
and directly from the arch of the aorta on the left side
in the superior mediastinum of the thorax. It passes
into the base of the neck through the thoracic inlet
bounded by T1 vertebral body, the sternum and first
rib and ascends into the carotid triangle.
Bifurcation into the internal and external carotid
arteries occurs at the level of the upper border of the
thyroid cartilage(C4).
www.indiandentalacademy.com
25. Deep cervical lymph nodes lie along its course.
Passes inferiorly through the carotid triangle receiving
many tributaries from surrounding structures.
The vagus has an extensive distribution as it conveys
voluntary motor and sensory nerve fibres to structures
in the neck, and viscero-motor fibres to thorax and
abdomen. It enters the neck by exiting the skull
through the jugular foramen. In the carotid triangle it
lies behind and between the carotid and jugular
vessels

28. POSTERIOR TRIANGLE
The posterior triangle is crossed,
about 2.5 cm above the clavicle,
by the inferior belly of the
Omohyoid, which divides the
space into two triangles:
an upper or occipital triangle
a lower or subclavian triangle
(or supraclavicular triangle)

34. BOUNDARIES OF OCCIPITAL TRIANGLE:
Posterior : Trapezius m.
Anterior : Sternocleidomastoid m.
Inferior : Omohyoid m.
Floor: Splenius Capitus m, Levator
Scapulae m, Scalenus Medius, and a
portion of Scalenus Anterior.
Roof: superficial layer of Deep Investing
Fascia.

36. Subclavian vein puncture :- To administer parental
fluids, central venous pressure and often is the point of
entry to venous system for central line placement.
(Infraclavicular subclavian vein approach)
Puncture of internal jugular vein
To make measurements of pressure within
the right chamber of the heart.

39. Severance of the external jugular vein
Injury by knife produces venous air
embolism.
Prominence of external jugular vein
Internal barometer, diagnostic sign of heart
failure.
The investing layer of deep cervical fascia helps
prevents the spread of abscess.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
40. The superficial layer of deep cervical fascia opposes the
extension of abscesses towards the surface, and pus
beneath it has a tendency to extend laterally. If the pus
is in the anterior triangle, it may find its way into the
mediastinum.
Pus behind the Prevertebral layer may extend towards
the lateral part of the neck and point in the lower part
of the posterior triangle or even descend in the axillary
sheath and point in the axilla. The pus may perforate
the Prevertebral layer and the buccopharyngeal fascia
to bulge into the pharynx as a retropharyngeal
abscess.

41. Injury to spinal accessory nerve can occur during
incisions given in the region of Sternocleidomastoid
for drainage of superficial abscess.
-- Wry neck Torticollis.
-- paralysis of Trapezius.
Congenital and spasmodic torticollis
www.indiandentalacademy.com
42. The internal jugular vein is important –
i) It acts as a guide for surgeons during removal of deep cervical
lymph nodes.
ii) In mitral stenosis, a thrill may be felt at the roof of neck, in
supraclavicular fossa during systole.
iii) The vein can safely cannulated in cases of cardio-vascular
collapse by introducing needle in backward and upward direction
in triangular space between two heads of sternocleidomastoid.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
43. Injury to the spinal accessory nerve in posterior
cervical triangle results in paralysis of Trapezius
muscle and shoulder dysfunction. (inability to raise the
arm above horizontal or shoulder droop)
Nerve crosses the posterior cervical triangle,
its superficial location makes it very susceptible to
injury.
Any surgery in the posterior triangle can injure the
nerve, such as cervical lymph node biopsy, excision of
benign masses and radical neck dissections for
malignancy.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
45. Iatrogenic spinal accessory nerve injuries need to be
diagnosed early and treated promptly to prevent a
severe and progressive debility of the shoulder girdle.
General practitioners need to be aware of the
possibility of injury to the spinal accessory nerve when
performing surgical procedures in the posterior
triangle of the neck. They may also perform an

accessory nerve in patients who present with shoulder
symptoms after neck
surgery.
Lymph node metastasis of cancer of floor of mouth
mainly distributes in I, II, III region; The patients with
negative cervical lymph node should be performed
lymph node dissection in I, II, III region (supra-half-
neck).

accurately localizing a wound, tumor or swelling
unless the surgeon perfectly knows the boundaries and
the contents of the triangles.
