Carnivorous plants obtain nutrients through trapping and digesting insects and small animals because the soil in their environments is typically low in nutrients. There are several types of carnivorous plants that employ different trapping mechanisms, including pitfall traps like pitcher plants which use a slippery leaf tube to trap prey, snap traps like the Venus flytrap which closes rapidly on triggered hairs, and flypaper traps such as sundews which use sticky mucilage to ensnare insects. Students were assigned to draw their own imaginary carnivorous plant using plant parts to trap and digest prey.
