Sunk Costs, Opportunity Costs, and Accounting Costs
In order to analyze sunk, opportunity, and accounting costs, you must first understand
their meanings in the language of business. Sunk costs are costs that have been
incurred previously and present or future decisions will not change that fact (Weygandt,
Kimmel, & Kieso, 2010). They cannot be recovered. For example, a machine in your
department was repaired two months ago and it cost $750. You are currently trying to
decide which of two new machines you should buy to replace that machine. The $750 is
a sunk cost and should not affect your decision. Even though sunk costs cannot be
recovered and should not be considered in deciding between alternatives, they do have
value with respect to accountability. As you studied last week, managers should be held
accountable for past actions and expenditures.
Opportunity costs are the benefits forgone from choosing one alternative over another
(Zimmerman, 2014). If your department has a machine that is capable of making both
product A and product B, and it is being used to make product A, the benefit of making
product B is lost. Another example pertains to hiring an employee for $50,000. The
opportunity cost is that the money is no longer available for other opportunities such as
advertising, equipment purchases, etc.

- 10. 2. Decide whether you want to calculate your percentage markup based on cost or selling price. If you decide to calculate your percent markup based on cost, go on to Step 3. If you decide to calculate your percent markup based on selling price, go on to Step 4.
- 11. 3. Calculate percent markup based on cost. This is done by dividing the peso markup by the cost. Example Peso mark-up 5.00 Purchase cost/buying price ÷ 10.00 Percentage mark-up .5 or 50%
- 12. 4. Calculate your percent markup based on selling price. This is done by dividing the peso markup by the selling price. Example Peso mark-up 5.00 Purchase cost/buying price ÷ 15.00 Percentage mark-up .33 or 33%
- 13. Using selling price will give you a lower percentage markup (assuming you are making a profit), while using cost will give you a higher percentage markup.
- 14. Application: The table below ask the peso mark-up and the percentage mark-up of an item. Decide for yourself on what item you want to solve. Solve those items in your notebooks. Afterwards, choose 1 representative of each to show their answers to the board.
