The Separative Self In Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar
As Plath s novel demonstrates, people often fall victim to their environments. In her article The
Separative Self in Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar Diane S. Bonds explains how The Bell Jar offers a
brilliant evocation of the oppressive atmosphere of the 1950s and the soul destroying effect this
atmosphere could have on ambitious, high minded young women like Plath (Bonds). Bonds
psychologically analyzes Esther s thoughts and actions to understand her mental decline. She makes
the claim that Esther is haunted by images suggesting the self mutilations of marriage and motherhood
(Bonds). She proves her assertion with the evidence that Esther sees the world as a series of
dismembered body parts. Esther cites the goggle eyed headlines (1) staring up at her while walking
through New York. She details her friend Doreen s physical characteristics: [she] had bright white hair
standing out in cotton candy fluff round her head and blue eyes like transparent agate marbles, hard
and polished and just about indestructible (4). When she returns home to Massachusetts, she describes
her neighbor, Dodo Conway: Not five feet tall, with a grotesque, protruding stomach (116). In all of
these instances, Esther describes human beings through highlighting their body parts; however, she
largely compares those parts to inanimate objects. She uses the word eyes to describe a headline,
which is lifeless.
Furthermore, Bonds explains Esther s repulsion with Dodo s pregnancy: Esther sees Dodo

Warrant Officer Personal Statement
I first became interested with the idea of becoming a Special Forces Warrant Officer during my
seventh deployment. At the time I had served in the army for almost 14 years, 10 of which were in
Special Operations. I was originally assigned to the infantry where I excelled in all my training and
leadership courses. This drove me to push myself further and try out for the Special Forces, eventually
being assigned to my first Operational Detachment in November 2004. While I have thoroughly
enjoyed and excelled as a Special Forces Medical Sergeant, I feel there is more room for growth in my
career and am looking forward to my next challenge.
The desire to further my career caused me to start to research the different options available to me.

This statement caught my attention right away when reading about the program on the Warrant Officer
Recruiting Website. My training in advanced special operations and past experiences while deployed
have led me to be very passionate about this. I feel very strongly that unconventional warfare is
extremely effective and is the best direction for our future military engagements.
Through the Warrant Officer Program, I will be able to further my knowledge and training in
advanced special operations and unconventional warfare which in turn will allow me to help shape our
soldiers and operational detachments to meet the challenges we will face in the future.
The Warrant Officer Program is also affords me a great opportunity to serve as a key member of the
detachment leadership. I have served on teams both with and without warrant officers and recognize
the importance of this role. The warrant officer is a key source of continuity for the detachment due to
the longevity provided to them. This allows them to pass guidance on to new team leadership and
minimize disruptions in training during leadership changes. This longevity and continuity is vital to
the shaping of the team, developing the long term path, and ensuring mission

Lincoln s view on Slavery and How it Evolved Essay
Lincoln s View on Slavery....And How It Evolved Abraham Lincoln spent most of his political career
as a member of the Whig party endorsing policies that aided economic development, supported free
soil and opposed the expansion of slavery. Lincoln was instrumental in creating the voice of the
Republican Party and during that process his own views on slavery were shaped. He played the middle
ground and therefore appealed to both former conservative northern Whigs, and radical Republicans.
The Civil War proved to be a turning point in Lincoln s view of slavery and the extent he would go to
abolish it. The Whig Party lost their political strength when the issue of slavery in the newly acquired
territories from Mexico split the party. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lincoln sought to balance the party s belief that slavery was morally wrong and oppose the expansion
of it with a promise to protect it in states where it already existed. Lincoln did not advocate political or
social equality for blacks but rather their inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
He carefully detailed his views on the limits to racial equality of black and white people. Lincoln
knew that the majority of northern voters, while not believing in slavery, considered blacks inferior
and wanted nothing to do with them. The North s strong moral opposition to slavery was due to the
influence of the Second Great Awakening which introduced the idea that slavery was a sin. This
message became accepted in the North because their economy did not rely heavily on slave labor. The
South never accepted the belief that slavery was a sin, it was too threatening to their way of life. The
differences in the economies of the North and South greatly influenced their views on slavery. On
October 13, 1858 during their sixth and seventh Lincoln Douglas debates Lincoln states that the main
difference in the views of the two parties was that Republicans believed slavery was morally, socially,
and politically wrong and Democrats believed it not to be. Lincoln stated that these ideas had stood
face to face from the beginning of time; one was the common

The Principle Of Separation Of Power
Our Founding Fathers were no strangers to the long standing care of a government. Throughout
history it has been proven over and over that when any one person is allowed to obtain and stockpile
power that he/she becomes the greatest threat to liberty. It is no wonder that the most famous and
treasured part of the Constitution, the separation of powers, was molded over hundreds of years.
The idea of separation of power is not necessarily a new concept. As far back as 350 B.C. the Greek
philosopher Aristotle made the observation in Politics that any government whether it be monarchal,
democratic, and etc. has three basic branches: the deliberative, the magisterial, and the judicative.
Today all three can be directly compared to: legislative, executive, and judicial within our modern day
governments. However, while Aristotle asserted that all three were basic components to any and all
governments, he did not specify that they should be wielded by separate entities of said governments.
It would not be until centuries after Aristotle s death that his idea of the different functions of
government would be separated into different branches. It was the French philosopher Baron de
Montesquieu put forth the idea that these powers should be separated, and no one person/branch
should hold multiple powers. Of course while John Locke had made the case for splitting the
legislative and executive powers, it was Montesquieu that gave our Founding Fathers the proof and/or
backing for a

Essay on Importance of Nothing in Shakespeare s King Lear
Importance of Nothing in William Shakespeare s King Lear
The Tragedy of King Lear has many important themes. One major theme concerns nothing. The main
focus around the discussion of nothing is that nothing is a many things. Nothing is what binds
everything.
The first mention of nothing is when King Lear asks his daughters to profess how much they love him.
The eldest daughters shower compliments upon him tickling his ears. Yet the Lear s favorite daughter
Cordelia will only speak the truth. When asked what she can say to gain her a portion of land better
than her sisters, she replies, Nothing, my Lord (1.1. ) He exclaims, Nothing! (1.1. ) and she responds,
Nothing (1.1. ). Lear s answers, Nothing will come of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then he asks Lear, Can you make no use of nothing, nuncle (1.4. )? This question should prod Lear to
think of his earlier mistake of making a big ordeal out of Cordelia s nothing. Ironically he responds,
nothing can be made out of nothing (1.4. ), echoing what he said to Cordelia in 1.1. The Fool then tells
Kent to tell him so much the rent of his land comes to (1.4. ). The answer to this, of course, would be
nothing. The King has given all his land to Goneril and Regan.
After Goneril walks into the room, he tells Lear thou art an O without a figure (1.4. ). An O without a
figure would be a zero. Thus the Fool tells Lear that he is nothing. He continues by saying
straightforwardly, I am a Fool, thou art nothing
(1.4. ). Remarks like this provide ample opportunity for Goneril to rebuke Lear for having an all licens
d Fool (1.4. ). In addition, the Fool calls Lear a sheal d peascod (1.4. ). This is another way of saying
he is empty. He is nothing.
These remarks provide a theme continuing throughout the story. The main theme is that nothing is
what binds everything together. If Cordelia had not responded nothing then the King would be happy.
He would have moved in with Cordelia and she would have supported him. Moreover, Cordelia would
have kept her portion and would have married the Duke Burgundy. Thus, her nothing changed
everything.
In addition, this nothing gives the play comic relief. The Fool

The Role Of Posttranslational Mofication In Archaea
The role of posttranslational modification (PTM) in the diverse environments of archaea diversifies
with the individual archaea. There are over 300,000 PTMs across about 5500 species of organisms.
One such PTM is reversible phosphorylation. This activity involves the activity of protein kinases and
phosphatases. Protein kinases move the Ξ³ phosphate group to another transcription factor or protein
and protein phosphatases remove a phosphate group. Reversible phosphorylation is ubiquitous in the
three domains of life and was first demonstrated around 1950 by Krebbs and Fischer in rabbit muscle
tissue. It was later demonstrated by Wang and Koshland (1978) in Salmonela typhimerium and finally
in archaea, Haloarchaea salinarium by Spudich and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Two component systems are not well studied in Euryarcheota, but extremophilic methanogens and
halophiles have been sequenced and researchers have found these types of systems are found in
Halobacterium salinarium, Halofarax volcanii, Methanosaeta harundinacea and Methanosarcina
barkeri.
Esser and colleagues also found that Tyrosine , Serine and Threonine phosphorylation are
commonalities in eukaryotes and archaea. A group of protein kinases called Hanks type kinases are
classified according to function. The kinases that phosphorylate Serine and Threonine are the most
common these are referred to in the article as STK s. STK s require autophosphorylation like other
TCS but rely on a manganese ion and substrates such as Casein and bovine serum albumen for cell
growth. Esser and colleagues cite a study by Wang et al 2010 using Sulfolobus tokodaii strain 7. This
study by Wang and colleagues shows the importance of the Manganese ion and four other amino acids
when either of them are mutated.
The function of eSTK s involve activation of the gene flaB. Once activated a complex of two protein
kinases and a phosphatase (ArnABC) along with ArnD, function in regulating motility. In a study by
Reimann et al 2012 ArnC was deleted and this resulted in sparse amounts of cell motility. However
deletion of ArnD proved to increase motility to a hyper motile state. This deletion study shows how
important phosphatases

The Gothic Elements in the Picture of Dorian Gray
Abstract In an attempt to find out the purposes of the gothic elements in The Picture of Dorian Gray,
this essay takes a close look at the three most prevailing gothic elements in the novel: the portrait,
decadence, and the gothic villain by first exploring their presence and development throughout, and
then examining their contributions to the characters, the plot development and the themes. First of all,
the unique properties and symbolic meanings of the portrait in this novel are discussed. The purpose
of the portrait is then analyzed in terms of its effect on Dorian Gray. Then, the theme of decadence is
identified in the personality of the protagonist. Its purpose is then investigated by comparing and

, was clearly reflected in his portrait. Under Lord Henry s influence, Dorian s change in his mental
state and moral values was dramatic. He learned to appreciate decadent art, to conform to the
philosophy of to cure the soul by means of senses by going to opium dens and eventually to
completely submit to sin by murdering Basil Hallward. Although Dorian s decay was hard to observe
because his beauty remained intact and thus created an innocent image of him, the portrait recorded
his inner change by altering his appearances, as we observe for the first time in the novel the touch of
cruelty round the warped lips in the painting after the death of Sybil Vane. The painting provided
Dorian a double life, as remarked in Into the Demon Universe: A Literary Exploration of Oscar Wilde:
The picture of his soul was locked safely away in a dark room while the innocent face he presented to
respectable society was only a mask. Indeed, the portrait became the spokesperson of Dorian s true
personality by altering his appearances according to his corruption of the mind.
A more convincing evidence of the portrait being a reflection of Dorian s moral decadence lies
moments before the death of Dorian. At the night of his death, Dorian attempted to convince himself
that he had indeed changed and had started committing

The Importance Of Transitioning To College
Thinking about the future can be nerve wracking and even somewhat intimidating. Transitioning from
a school where everyone knows their peers and has an overall routine to a place that is all new can be
difficult for many, especially in the beginning. However, by taking mentally challenging classes in
high school, as well as planning for what lies ahead, it has been said to be a much easier transition.
There are countless paths one can take after senior year, allowing individuals to make one of the most
important decisions of their lives; thus preparing them for adulthood and independence. Nonetheless,
even with all of these options and the considerable amount of time I have left in my high school
career, I have decided on going to college. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Good writing skills are crucial for my future plans because of college applications, essays, and even
lab reports. Although UW Madison is my top choice, I am not automatically guaranteed in. I will need
to write two essays for my application, which is probably the most important section. Furthermore,
since papers and essays are usually worth a lot of points, I will need to continue practicing writing
throughout high school so my grades won t drop both now and in the future. Likewise, since I am
going into the science field, I will need to write a lot of lab reports. However, my reports won t be
successful if they aren t thorough and clear; therefore, I must learn how to improve my writing skills
as well as be able to retain these new skills.
Ever since I started preschool, I have been preparing for graduation. I have learned many skills and
even some useless information that made me curious about the world, which is why I care so much
about school today. All these years of schooling, which has provided both academic as well as social
improvements, has helped me construct the characteristics I now possess. These qualities, as well as
continually learning by trial and error, are what will make me the successful individual I wish to be. I

Environmental Consequences Of Offshore Oil Drilling
Offshore oil drilling is a controversial topic because when oil spills, it does extensive amounts of
damage to the environment. Countries capable of mining oil in the ocean reap the economic benefits
in addition to reducing their dependency on external oil. While it is uncontroversial that offshore
drilling is a massive boon for those countries, the environmental consequences of a spill also affect the
economic welfare of nearby residents. Oil contaminates animals through a process called
biomagnification, where chemicals progressively become more detrimental to the animals the higher
they are on the food chain. When oil spills into the ocean, it impairs the growth of native species and
deteriorates the ecosystem. As a result, the livelihood of people in the tourist industry, fisherman, and
shrimpers is crippled and may take decades to recover. Presuming that a country has a coast it can use
for drilling, excavating oil from depths of up to a mile is nowhere near effortless. In addition to
common oilrig accidents, fires and spills, there are a plethora of problems that oil riggers can
encounter including severe weather storms (like hurricanes) and inexperience in the remote oceans
depths. Oilrigs are being used even deeper in the ocean creating new environmental and engineering
problems. Dr. Joseph A. Pratt of the University of Houston, highlights the problems riggers
encountered when drilling for oil in the Canadian sector of the Beaufort Sea; conditions were

Summary Of The Supernatural Elements Of Monkey Beach
The supernatural elements of Monkey Beach, by Eden Robinson make up a large portion of the book s
context and are the central focus of the novel. These supernatural elements force the audience to
question whether Lisamarie suffers from mental health issues, or if her experiences with the
supernatural are part of her Haisla culture. The supernatural elements Lisamarie encounters does not
suggest that Lisamarie suffers from mental health issues. A Eurocentric reading of the text would state
that Lisamarie is mentally unstable and that her visions are linked directly to her wellbeing.

If Lisamarie is unsure of certain aspects of her own culture, how are the outsiders who are not familiar
with the Haisla culture at all, supposed to understand her family s supernatural gifts. This is where the
audience viewing this book has troubles understanding Lisamaries perspective and also why many
readers take in a Eurocentric viewing of the novel. Lisas supernatural encounters are blamed on post
traumatic stress, passed on through generations in result of residential schools, drinking and drug
abuse, and grieving of dead relatives. The author Eden Robinson makes it easy for the reader to claim
that Lisa is crazy, due to all these tragedies over the course of her life. Although there is some
unproven evidence towards Lisas visions being linked to trauma, one must take a deeper look to
realize her mental health is stable.
Not only are Lisamaries supernatural visions part of her Haisla culture; they are also seen as being a
gift by some; and completely misunderstood by others. Some people decide to view these visions as a

Annotated Bibliography On Japanese And English
This commentary is compressed form of a thesis on annotated translation. The object of this task is to
present a complete annotated translation of a pamphlet that introducing Japanese culture, in particular
tea culture. The key difficulties of this translation are what issues are faced up when translating the
original texts , and how these issues are figured out in the translation .
When translation is processed, I encountered several difficult problems such as a word has two or
three definitions and meanings, a word cannot be translated literally, a peculiar idiom, and proper
nouns. Nonetheless, to state the grammatical order is different between Japanese and English. In the
following section will present these problems, and how I solve.
Occasionally a Japanese word has more than two meanings and definitions. When I encountered that
situation, I cannot translate that vocabulary immediately. To solve this issue, it is important to
recognise a sentence as well as a paragraph. For example, γŠθŒΆγ‚’γ¨γ«γ‹γγ‚ˆγι£²γ‚€ (continue to
drink and enjoy tea). In this case, I interpret γ‚ˆγ for continue to , however, definition for γ‚ˆγ is
decent or often . If I translate decent for this word, the sentence does not make sense. Therefore, it is
important to understand sentences and paragraph.
Other words for this issue remain; γ‚ˆγ‚Š, which means more or other than . でも, which means but or
even . ι–‹θŠ±, which means a flower bloom or become popular .

U.s. Foreign Policy During The Middle East
For over the last two decades the Middle East has gradually gathered attention and has come to the
forefront of U.S. foreign policy. The focus on this region began primarily after the attacks on the two
World Trade Center s in New York City on September 11th, 2001. Iraq was the initial target in the
response to the devastating tragedy. This response involved an indefinite occupation with the intention
of eliminating weapons of mass destruction , with intelligence under the Bush Administration
allegedly confirming their existence. As this undeclared war on Iraq took place, U.S. foreign policy
was initiated. It consisted of bringing down an authoritarian regime and establishing democracy within
the state of Iraq, along with decimating any potential threats to the U.S. homeland. The major threat
lying with terrorist organizations in the region such as Al Qaeda, who were to blame for the 9/11
attacks on U.S. soil. Eventually the deployment of troops into Iraq was left without any particular
cause, due to the revelation that Saddam Hussein s regime had no possession of any nuclear weapons.
And as U.S. troops struggled to figure out exactly what they were fighting for, an insurgency began to
emerge. Is the U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East the cause of insurgency in the region along with
the eventual formation of militant groups such as ISIS? The policies carried out by the United States

Still Life With Skull Essay
Still Life with Skull by Paul Cezanne was completed in 1898 during the Post Impressionist era
commonly known as the final period. The piece features a skull, fruits, and a piece of white cloth
placed on a table. It takes the vanitas genre of art, done using oil on canvas measuring 65.4 cm by 54.3
cm which is exhibited at the Barnes Foundation, Merion, Pennsylvania, USA (Lindsay 1969, 23). This
work represents a powerful and essential link between the materialistic artistic movement of
Expressionism and the ephemeral features of Impressionism. The painting features a dark background
with planes of color used in the foreground and on objects to create space and depth of perspective.
Texture is used to create a tonal harmony devoid of tactile or sensual appeal, therefore portraying
volume.
However, Cezanne leaves little room for color and volume to play their great roles as light diffuses to
the balanced tints of ochre. Space is created by the absolute stillness of the piece thereby affirming the
painter as a great master of composition, color, and design. Further, the piece features complex fields
that create an abstraction by the artist s sensitive and repetitive brushstrokes. Cezanne is portraying the
complexity of man s visual perception ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

wellness. The flowers on the background mean folly and mortal sin of laziness (Platzman 2001, 116).
The glasses are representative of vanity, as is the reflection shown on the still life with a skull and
writing quill. The empty glass is a symbol of death and fragility of human life. The bottle may also be

Assignment On Benihana Simulation

SESSION: TRIMESTER 3
BENIHANA SIMULATION REFLECTIVE JOURNAL
OVERVIEW:
BENIHANA INC, an American restaurant company was founded in 1964 in New York City and has
116 Japanese cuisine restaurants. Benihana simulation is a computer simulation of an operation
management result based on concept of Benihana restaurant in Tokyo designed by Harvard school.
The outline of the simulation is based on two seating position i.e. bar and the dining area. The target of
this restaurant based simulation is to boost utilization, nightly profit and throughput time by using
batching strategy, size of bar and cycle time and different advertising scheme. Simulation consist of 6
challenges where only 1 to 3 factor can be changed in challenges 1 to 5 whereas challenge 6 is a
combination of strategies to gain the maximum output i.e. nightly profit by using all possible factors
from 5 previous challenges.
I started simulation by testing all the possible outcomes from challenge 1 to 5 and used the best
scenario from one simulation to the other step by step and drew the conclusion at the very end.
CHALLENGE 1:
The first challenge was to determine whether or not batching dining room customer was beneficial.
Batching means that the parties must reach a number of eight before they are seated. Two scenarios
from the simulation show that batching is a better strategy that helped to increase profit. Utilization of
the restaurant capacity is largest while batching. We could place 8 people at single table rather than
placing group of 5 at one and 3 at another. The number of customers that can be served at one time
highly influences the profit. According to the simulation it is more beneficial to use batching as
average profit is $83.64 compared to average profit of $282.29 when not batched. By using batching
benihana restaurants are able to eliminate bottleneck that occurs in the waiting area/bar. By doing so
they are able to see more customers in their restaurants which can be seen in the graphs to the right.
They lose fewer customers and more diners are served. Bottleneck primarily refers to the resources

As can be imagined, positional data is at the core of robotic functions. This data type s structure is in
the format XYZWPR (X, Y, Z directional values in millimeters and their associated rotational
elements around each axis, Yaw, Pitch and Roll in degrees) where each data item is REAL [1].
Additionally, the robot arm configuration is part of the positional data, and it is defined based on the
positions of the robot wrist flip (flipped or not flipped), elbow orientation (up or down), and the
direction the robot is facing (front or back). This results in configuration values which have the
options N/F, U/D and T/B; typically we see robots with NUT configurations. There are more parts to
the robot position such as the turn count (three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is relatively simple to purchase an option from
FANUC and vastly increase this temporary storage space.
When translation is complete and the p code is loaded on to the robot controller a variable data table
which houses all the static variables necessary for the program to run is generated and stored in RAM
[1]. A few benefits that exist when the variable data is stored this way include the fact that the variable
data can be accessed easily by multiple programs or several times from the same program for reading

Additional Interesting Facts about KAREL
KAREL does have reserved words which have their own rules such as PROGRAM, CONST, TYPE,
VAR, BEGIN and END; reserved words are always all capital letters [1]. For example, the first word
in the KAREL program must be PROGRAM followed by an identifier; it is worth noting that this
identifier term cannot be used elsewhere in the program [1]. KAREL has many additional reserved
words as well. KAREL also has predefined identifies with predetermined values such as
TRUE/FALSE, ON/OFF, MAXINT and MININT (maximum and minimum integer values allowed)
[1]. System variables are predefined variables that start with a dollar sign and come with values
already set by FANUC depending on the robot model [1]. Some of these variables can be accessed via
KAREL while others cannot.
Two types of arrays are supported in KAREL and they are multi dimensional (two or three
dimensions) and

Elizabethan Era Marriage
In the Shakespearean Era, marriage was the highlight of a person s life. Marriage usually occurred at
age 24 for women and age 27 for men, though marriage was legal at age 12 for girls and 14 for boys.
Weddings had to be preceded by three crying of the banns unless a special marriage certificate was
obtained. The wedding feast was an important part of the marriage and was meticulously planned for.
Marriages often functioned as a way for families to increase their wealth, and women were expected
to bring a dowry into the marriage. After marriage, women were expected to obey their husbands and
run their household. Shakespeare was married to Anne Hathaway and had three children with her. In
Shakespearean Era England, the legal age for marriage was 12 for girls and 14 for boys. Despite this,
most people married at a later age because they had to save enough money to afford a marriage. The
average Shakespearean Era woman got married at age 24 and the average Shakespearean era man got
married at age 27. The legal age of consent was 21 years old so anyone who ... Show more content on

The Influence of Lord Henry in The Picture of Dorian...
In analyzing Oscar Wilde s The Picture of Dorian Gray, concepts such as influence and the origin of
evil in Dorian Gray play an exceptionally valuable role in understanding the motives of the characters.
Although some critics argue characters such as Lord Kelso significantly influence Dorian s corruption,
Lord Henry Wotton s toxic personality undeniably impacts Dorian the most. Throughout the course of
the novel, Lord Henry remains the ultimate source of evil and uses deception and persuasion to poison
Dorian from a naΓ―ve boy to a destructive monster. Shortly after meeting Dorian for the first time, Lord
Henry calmly declares, to influence a person is to give him one s own soul (20). In these few words,
Lord Henry foreshadows the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The colorful diction and syntax in this paragraph allow the reader to witness Lord Henry s sturdy grip
on Dorian s future as he begins to transform from virtually flawless to rotten. Word choices and
phrases such as motionless, parted lips, strangely bright, fresh influences, secret chord, vibrating,
throbbing, and curious illustrate Dorian s puzzling mood of total absorption as he stands stationary
and lifeless for ten whole minutes, a remarkably long time to comprehend a stranger s thoughts. While
Dorian initially exhibits a clueless and unenlightened perspective on life, Lord Henry s dominating
opinions strike a chord in Dorian, causing him to flood with waves of understanding about the purpose
of life. By comparing Dorian s brain to a chord, it generates a visual image of Lord Henry plucking a
single string that stimulates newborn thoughts to dance around in Dorian s mind as his angelic eyes
open up to corrupting theories about the dark world of pleasure. Although the fact that Lord Henry
generates a completely new influence over Dorian s mind is as plain as black and white, critic Esther
Rashkin asserts the abusive acts of Dorian s grandfather, Lord Kelso, plant the seed for Dorian to
eventually grow into a vile man. By blaming the tyrannical Lord Kelso for Dorian s corruption,
Rashkin demands the widely shared view that Lord Henry is the evil figure in the story who corrupts
the innocent Dorian Gray and

How Did Religion Affect European Society
The birth of modern science created conflict between religion and science in European societies. With
the conflicts, the people had started to question the church. These conflicted changes between religion

church itself. The idea that everything was to be perfect affected the communities of the people. The
ideas that the church had displayed in decades past, rejected any further discoveries or advancements

had a low profit at that reporting time. The debt to total assets ratio was .28%, which showed the

Ghosts In The Illiad
Although it is unknown when people began to believe in ghosts, but from the evidences it is dated
back to ancient Mesopotamian religion as well as Egypt culture in the Bronze age (3300 1200 BC).
The belief was started by the concept of the souls from the Near East religions (which, were
influenced from the ancient Greek religion). In ancient Mesopotamian culture, death was considered
no turning back point . The land of the dead was known as Irkalla, land of no return , where the souls
reside in darkness and hunger. No soul can leave Irkalla, however, ghosts could appear to living
people to ask for proper burial or to correct what the living had done improperly to them. When one is
dead, they will turn into a Gidim (spirit), and it traveled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Homer s depiction of classical ghosts are just plain warriors mostly from Troy who would murmur
heroic deeds they did in hollow tone to each other and reside under Hades s realm for eternity. They
are not harmful to any living once the proper burials were performed and coins were placed under
their tongues. When they did appear to the living for some particular reason they are mere puffs of
smoke. Although in Illiad, Achilles is approached by his dead comrade, Patroclus, who appeared with
the same stature and clothes as a living, asking him to cremate his body. Some classical ghosts also
appear to the living to give advices as well. The early medieval ghosts, however, the phenomena were
heavily influenced by the advent of Christianity. The church, in order to attract converts, therefore
offer alternative doctrine of afterlife. It was believed that souls might be punished after death, but
eventually all will be saved. The bad souls would become demons. These ghosts would indirectly
reveal their presence, in case of report by Greek writer regarding the fourth of Nicaea, whom found
the dead bishops signatures upon the document in front of their tomb, or on some occasion, ghosts
appeared to be dirty, disfigured, and livid as in Perpetua s story when she saw her dead brother. After
that, in the early fourteen century, it was believed that ghosts are ubiquitous from the great famine and
Black Death. The theme of death were more recognized and emphasized as well as purgatory and
limbo. Most spirits communicated with the living through dreams and the subject often concerned
with confessions, consequences of not confessing their sins, and baptism, warning the living that ones
should confess their sins and baptize before they die. Then, in sixteenth century, the witches, demons,
and evil spirits waiting to trick the living are became the topic as well as the existence of

Pride And Prejudice By Elizabeth Bennet
In today s society, young girls have been taught to believe in their perfect Cinderella wedding where
they will marry their Prince Charming in a beautiful dress and eventually live happily ever after. The
film industry portrays marriage as picture perfect, in which every girl has their dream wedding and
true love always finds its way. Contrary to the media s view, marriage was not always a fairy tale
because women had the responsibility to help provide for their family. During the English Regency
period, young girls married for financial security and social benefits to improve their family s status.
In Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet rebelled against this mainstream idea of marriage set by
society, in order to marry for true love. Set during the Regency period, Pride and Prejudice focuses on
the upbringing of women in a male dominated society in which marriage was the only escape from
destitution. For women, the story emphasizes the major motives behind matrimony such as financial
stability, social pressure, and passion, but it ultimately embodies the idea that females are capable of
marrying for true love. In the following pages, this essay will first provide background information
about society during the English Regency and the marriage customs set for women during this time
period. This essay will then offer a brief summary of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Finally, this
essay will analyze the various motives of marriages presented between

What Are The Major Changes Of The Sui Tang And Song Dynasty
Major changes in political structure, social and economic life define the Sui, Tang, and Song
dynasties. Each period laid the foundation for the next, with changes and improvements to create a
new order. China is one of the world s richest historical countries boasting of ancient civilization.
China has a mysterious and long history, about 5,000 years. China traces her culture to a blend of
small tribes like any other great civilizations of the world. These small original tribes expanded to
what is China today. The history of China records that Xia Dynasty is the oldest dynasty with
Yuanmou man being the oldest hominoid in China. The country also documents a number of eminent
people who contributed to the nation s enrichment and development experienced today. However, this
essay seeks to discuss the major changes in political structures, social and economic life that occurred
during the Sui dynasty, the Tang dynasty and the Song dynasty in China. The Sui dynasty reigned
from 581 618 A.D. The emperor built monasteries for both Buddhism and Daoism throughout the
land, and appointed Buddhist monks as his key advisors. The Han system of examination based on the
Confucian classics were revived. Taxation was reformed, and a census was introduced to create
equitable tax collection. Also, a land grant was given to every taxable male. Once a male turned 60
years old, part of the land was returned to the government, the rest could be passed on to his heirs.

Persuasive Essay On Gifted Education
Ward, 2005); President Obama s defunding of the Javits Act, as part of the federal budget in 2012
(Equity) (Stephens, 2011), and the passing of the TALENT Act under the Every Student Succeeds Act
(ESSA) in 2015 (NAGC, n.d.). In short, the federal government s support for gifted education has
been inconsistent at best, and when compared to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
(IDEA), which guarantees all children between the ages of three and twenty one with specifically
identified disabilities a free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment in
conformance with an Individualized Education Program (Ward, 2005, p. 58) funding and support by
federal government is severely lacking (Brown, 2008; Ward, 2005). Nevertheless, the TALENT Act
(2015) is encouraging for gifted education as it promotes professional development to support high
ability students, seeks to recognize and respond to excellence gaps, makes student achievement data
publicly available, and advocates for research and the distribution of research that supports best
practices in gifted education (NAGC, n.d.). Likewise, the Javits Act continues to give hope to those
who have been historically underrepresented in gifted education through the first of its two priorities,
which is to support Initiatives [that] develop and scale up models serving students who are
underrepresented in gifted and talented programs (USDOE, 2017).
Nomination and Confirmatory Practices
In Comparing Apples and Oranges: Fifteen years of definitions of giftedness in research, Carman
(2013) identified nine gifted identification methods she found through reviewing 103 articles. These
methods were intelligence tests (IQ), achievement tests, academic achievement (Grades), teacher,
parent, counselor, and committee recommendation, extracurricular activities, and additional sources of
evidence (i.e. Performance Based Assessments). Carman (2013) also wrote, in her article, that there
appears to be some confusion between giftedness and intelligence since definitions of giftedness often
align more with the latter than the former. The fact that there are blurred lines between these terms
might explain why there has been an overreliance on IQ

  • 4. The Separative Self In Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar As Plath s novel demonstrates, people often fall victim to their environments. In her article The Separative Self in Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar Diane S. Bonds explains how The Bell Jar offers a brilliant evocation of the oppressive atmosphere of the 1950s and the soul destroying effect this atmosphere could have on ambitious, high minded young women like Plath (Bonds). Bonds psychologically analyzes Esther s thoughts and actions to understand her mental decline. She makes the claim that Esther is haunted by images suggesting the self mutilations of marriage and motherhood (Bonds). She proves her assertion with the evidence that Esther sees the world as a series of dismembered body parts. Esther cites the goggle eyed headlines (1) staring up at her while walking through New York. She details her friend Doreen s physical characteristics: [she] had bright white hair standing out in cotton candy fluff round her head and blue eyes like transparent agate marbles, hard and polished and just about indestructible (4). When she returns home to Massachusetts, she describes her neighbor, Dodo Conway: Not five feet tall, with a grotesque, protruding stomach (116). In all of these instances, Esther describes human beings through highlighting their body parts; however, she largely compares those parts to inanimate objects. She uses the word eyes to describe a headline, which is lifeless. Furthermore, Bonds explains Esther s repulsion with Dodo s pregnancy: Esther sees Dodo ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Warrant Officer Personal Statement I first became interested with the idea of becoming a Special Forces Warrant Officer during my seventh deployment. At the time I had served in the army for almost 14 years, 10 of which were in Special Operations. I was originally assigned to the infantry where I excelled in all my training and leadership courses. This drove me to push myself further and try out for the Special Forces, eventually being assigned to my first Operational Detachment in November 2004. While I have thoroughly enjoyed and excelled as a Special Forces Medical Sergeant, I feel there is more room for growth in my career and am looking forward to my next challenge. The desire to further my career caused me to start to research the different options available to me. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This statement caught my attention right away when reading about the program on the Warrant Officer Recruiting Website. My training in advanced special operations and past experiences while deployed have led me to be very passionate about this. I feel very strongly that unconventional warfare is extremely effective and is the best direction for our future military engagements. Through the Warrant Officer Program, I will be able to further my knowledge and training in advanced special operations and unconventional warfare which in turn will allow me to help shape our soldiers and operational detachments to meet the challenges we will face in the future. The Warrant Officer Program is also affords me a great opportunity to serve as a key member of the detachment leadership. I have served on teams both with and without warrant officers and recognize the importance of this role. The warrant officer is a key source of continuity for the detachment due to the longevity provided to them. This allows them to pass guidance on to new team leadership and minimize disruptions in training during leadership changes. This longevity and continuity is vital to the shaping of the team, developing the long term path, and ensuring mission ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Lincoln s view on Slavery and How it Evolved Essay Lincoln s View on Slavery....And How It Evolved Abraham Lincoln spent most of his political career as a member of the Whig party endorsing policies that aided economic development, supported free soil and opposed the expansion of slavery. Lincoln was instrumental in creating the voice of the Republican Party and during that process his own views on slavery were shaped. He played the middle ground and therefore appealed to both former conservative northern Whigs, and radical Republicans. The Civil War proved to be a turning point in Lincoln s view of slavery and the extent he would go to abolish it. The Whig Party lost their political strength when the issue of slavery in the newly acquired territories from Mexico split the party. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lincoln sought to balance the party s belief that slavery was morally wrong and oppose the expansion of it with a promise to protect it in states where it already existed. Lincoln did not advocate political or social equality for blacks but rather their inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. He carefully detailed his views on the limits to racial equality of black and white people. Lincoln knew that the majority of northern voters, while not believing in slavery, considered blacks inferior and wanted nothing to do with them. The North s strong moral opposition to slavery was due to the influence of the Second Great Awakening which introduced the idea that slavery was a sin. This message became accepted in the North because their economy did not rely heavily on slave labor. The South never accepted the belief that slavery was a sin, it was too threatening to their way of life. The differences in the economies of the North and South greatly influenced their views on slavery. On October 13, 1858 during their sixth and seventh Lincoln Douglas debates Lincoln states that the main difference in the views of the two parties was that Republicans believed slavery was morally, socially, and politically wrong and Democrats believed it not to be. Lincoln stated that these ideas had stood face to face from the beginning of time; one was the common ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Principle Of Separation Of Power Our Founding Fathers were no strangers to the long standing care of a government. Throughout history it has been proven over and over that when any one person is allowed to obtain and stockpile power that he/she becomes the greatest threat to liberty. It is no wonder that the most famous and treasured part of the Constitution, the separation of powers, was molded over hundreds of years. The idea of separation of power is not necessarily a new concept. As far back as 350 B.C. the Greek philosopher Aristotle made the observation in Politics that any government whether it be monarchal, democratic, and etc. has three basic branches: the deliberative, the magisterial, and the judicative. Today all three can be directly compared to: legislative, executive, and judicial within our modern day governments. However, while Aristotle asserted that all three were basic components to any and all governments, he did not specify that they should be wielded by separate entities of said governments. It would not be until centuries after Aristotle s death that his idea of the different functions of government would be separated into different branches. It was the French philosopher Baron de Montesquieu put forth the idea that these powers should be separated, and no one person/branch should hold multiple powers. Of course while John Locke had made the case for splitting the legislative and executive powers, it was Montesquieu that gave our Founding Fathers the proof and/or backing for a ... • 8. Essay on Importance of Nothing in Shakespeare s King Lear Importance of Nothing in William Shakespeare s King Lear The Tragedy of King Lear has many important themes. One major theme concerns nothing. The main focus around the discussion of nothing is that nothing is a many things. Nothing is what binds everything. The first mention of nothing is when King Lear asks his daughters to profess how much they love him. The eldest daughters shower compliments upon him tickling his ears. Yet the Lear s favorite daughter Cordelia will only speak the truth. When asked what she can say to gain her a portion of land better than her sisters, she replies, Nothing, my Lord (1.1. ) He exclaims, Nothing! (1.1. ) and she responds, Nothing (1.1. ). Lear s answers, Nothing will come of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then he asks Lear, Can you make no use of nothing, nuncle (1.4. )? This question should prod Lear to think of his earlier mistake of making a big ordeal out of Cordelia s nothing. Ironically he responds, nothing can be made out of nothing (1.4. ), echoing what he said to Cordelia in 1.1. The Fool then tells Kent to tell him so much the rent of his land comes to (1.4. ). The answer to this, of course, would be nothing. The King has given all his land to Goneril and Regan. After Goneril walks into the room, he tells Lear thou art an O without a figure (1.4. ). An O without a figure would be a zero. Thus the Fool tells Lear that he is nothing. He continues by saying straightforwardly, I am a Fool, thou art nothing (1.4. ). Remarks like this provide ample opportunity for Goneril to rebuke Lear for having an all licens d Fool (1.4. ). In addition, the Fool calls Lear a sheal d peascod (1.4. ). This is another way of saying he is empty. He is nothing. These remarks provide a theme continuing throughout the story. The main theme is that nothing is what binds everything together. If Cordelia had not responded nothing then the King would be happy. He would have moved in with Cordelia and she would have supported him. Moreover, Cordelia would have kept her portion and would have married the Duke Burgundy. Thus, her nothing changed everything. In addition, this nothing gives the play comic relief. The Fool ... • 9. The Role Of Posttranslational Mofication In Archaea The role of posttranslational modification (PTM) in the diverse environments of archaea diversifies with the individual archaea. There are over 300,000 PTMs across about 5500 species of organisms. One such PTM is reversible phosphorylation. This activity involves the activity of protein kinases and phosphatases. Protein kinases move the Ξ³ phosphate group to another transcription factor or protein and protein phosphatases remove a phosphate group. Reversible phosphorylation is ubiquitous in the three domains of life and was first demonstrated around 1950 by Krebbs and Fischer in rabbit muscle tissue. It was later demonstrated by Wang and Koshland (1978) in Salmonela typhimerium and finally in archaea, Haloarchaea salinarium by Spudich and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Esser and colleagues also found that Tyrosine , Serine and Threonine phosphorylation are commonalities in eukaryotes and archaea. A group of protein kinases called Hanks type kinases are classified according to function. The kinases that phosphorylate Serine and Threonine are the most common these are referred to in the article as STK s. STK s require autophosphorylation like other TCS but rely on a manganese ion and substrates such as Casein and bovine serum albumen for cell growth. Esser and colleagues cite a study by Wang et al 2010 using Sulfolobus tokodaii strain 7. This study by Wang and colleagues shows the importance of the Manganese ion and four other amino acids when either of them are mutated. The function of eSTK s involve activation of the gene flaB. Once activated a complex of two protein kinases and a phosphatase (ArnABC) along with ArnD, function in regulating motility. In a study by Reimann et al 2012 ArnC was deleted and this resulted in sparse amounts of cell motility. However deletion of ArnD proved to increase motility to a hyper motile state. • 10. The Gothic Elements in the Picture of Dorian Gray Abstract In an attempt to find out the purposes of the gothic elements in The Picture of Dorian Gray, this essay takes a close look at the three most prevailing gothic elements in the novel: the portrait, decadence, and the gothic villain by first exploring their presence and development throughout, and then examining their contributions to the characters, the plot development and the themes. First of all, the unique properties and symbolic meanings of the portrait in this novel are discussed. The purpose of the portrait is then analyzed in terms of its effect on Dorian Gray. Then, the theme of decadence is identified in the personality of the protagonist. Its purpose is then investigated by comparing and analyzing the opinions of the ... He learned to appreciate decadent art, to conform to the philosophy of to cure the soul by means of senses by going to opium dens and eventually to completely submit to sin by murdering Basil Hallward. Although Dorian s decay was hard to observe because his beauty remained intact and thus created an innocent image of him, the portrait recorded his inner change by altering his appearances, as we observe for the first time in the novel the touch of cruelty round the warped lips in the painting after the death of Sybil Vane. The painting provided Dorian a double life, as remarked in Into the Demon Universe: A Literary Exploration of Oscar Wilde: The picture of his soul was locked safely away in a dark room while the innocent face he presented to respectable society was only a mask. Indeed, the portrait became the spokesperson of Dorian s true personality by altering his appearances according to his corruption of the mind. A more convincing evidence of the portrait being a reflection of Dorian s moral decadence lies moments before the death of Dorian. At the night of his death, Dorian attempted to convince himself that he had indeed changed and had started committing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Transitioning from a school where everyone knows their peers and has an overall routine to a place that is all new can be difficult for many, especially in the beginning. However, by taking mentally challenging classes in high school, as well as planning for what lies ahead, it has been said to be a much easier transition. There are countless paths one can take after senior year, allowing individuals to make one of the most important decisions of their lives; thus preparing them for adulthood and independence. • 13. Environmental Consequences Of Offshore Oil Drilling Offshore oil drilling is a controversial topic because when oil spills, it does extensive amounts of damage to the environment. Countries capable of mining oil in the ocean reap the economic benefits in addition to reducing their dependency on external oil. While it is uncontroversial that offshore drilling is a massive boon for those countries, the environmental consequences of a spill also affect the economic welfare of nearby residents. Oil contaminates animals through a process called biomagnification, where chemicals progressively become more detrimental to the animals the higher they are on the food chain. When oil spills into the ocean, it impairs the growth of native species and deteriorates the ecosystem. As a result, the livelihood of people in the tourist industry, fisherman, and shrimpers is crippled and may take decades to recover. Presuming that a country has a coast it can use for drilling, excavating oil from depths of up to a mile is nowhere near effortless. In addition to common oilrig accidents, fires and spills, there are a plethora of problems that oil riggers can encounter including severe weather storms (like hurricanes) and inexperience in the remote oceans depths. Oilrigs are being used even deeper in the ocean creating new environmental and engineering problems. Dr. Joseph A. Pratt of the University of Houston, highlights the problems riggers encountered when drilling for oil in the Canadian sector of the Beaufort Sea; conditions were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Summary Of The Supernatural Elements Of Monkey Beach The supernatural elements of Monkey Beach, by Eden Robinson make up a large portion of the book s context and are the central focus of the novel. These supernatural elements force the audience to question whether Lisamarie suffers from mental health issues, or if her experiences with the supernatural are part of her Haisla culture. The supernatural elements Lisamarie encounters does not suggest that Lisamarie suffers from mental health issues. If Lisamarie is unsure of certain aspects of her own culture, how are the outsiders who are not familiar with the Haisla culture at all, supposed to understand her family s supernatural gifts. This is where the audience viewing this book has troubles understanding Lisamaries perspective and also why many readers take in a Eurocentric viewing of the novel. The object of this task is to present a complete annotated translation of a pamphlet that introducing Japanese culture, in particular tea culture. The key difficulties of this translation are what issues are faced up when translating the original texts , and how these issues are figured out in the translation . When translation is processed, I encountered several difficult problems such as a word has two or three definitions and meanings, a word cannot be translated literally, a peculiar idiom, and proper nouns. Nonetheless, to state the grammatical order is different between Japanese and English. In the following section will present these problems, and how I solve. Occasionally a Japanese word has more than two meanings and definitions. When I encountered that situation, I cannot translate that vocabulary immediately. To solve this issue, it is important to recognise a sentence as well as a paragraph. For example, γŠθŒΆγ‚’γ¨γ«γ‹γγ‚ˆγι£²γ‚€ (continue to drink and enjoy tea). In this case, I interpret γ‚ˆγ for continue to , however, definition for γ‚ˆγ is decent or often . If I translate decent for this word, the sentence does not make sense. The focus on this region began primarily after the attacks on the two World Trade Center s in New York City on September 11th, 2001. Iraq was the initial target in the response to the devastating tragedy. This response involved an indefinite occupation with the intention of eliminating weapons of mass destruction , with intelligence under the Bush Administration allegedly confirming their existence. As this undeclared war on Iraq took place, U.S. foreign policy was initiated. It consisted of bringing down an authoritarian regime and establishing democracy within the state of Iraq, along with decimating any potential threats to the U.S. homeland. The major threat lying with terrorist organizations in the region such as Al Qaeda, who were to blame for the 9/11 attacks on U.S. soil. Eventually the deployment of troops into Iraq was left without any particular cause, due to the revelation that Saddam Hussein s regime had no possession of any nuclear weapons. • 19. Still Life With Skull Essay Still Life with Skull by Paul Cezanne was completed in 1898 during the Post Impressionist era commonly known as the final period. The piece features a skull, fruits, and a piece of white cloth placed on a table. It takes the vanitas genre of art, done using oil on canvas measuring 65.4 cm by 54.3 cm which is exhibited at the Barnes Foundation, Merion, Pennsylvania, USA (Lindsay 1969, 23). This work represents a powerful and essential link between the materialistic artistic movement of Expressionism and the ephemeral features of Impressionism. The painting features a dark background with planes of color used in the foreground and on objects to create space and depth of perspective. Texture is used to create a tonal harmony devoid of tactile or sensual appeal, therefore portraying volume. However, Cezanne leaves little room for color and volume to play their great roles as light diffuses to the balanced tints of ochre. Space is created by the absolute stillness of the piece thereby affirming the painter as a great master of composition, color, and design. Further, the piece features complex fields that create an abstraction by the artist s sensitive and repetitive brushstrokes. Cezanne is portraying the complexity of man s visual perception ... Benihana simulation is a computer simulation of an operation management result based on concept of Benihana restaurant in Tokyo designed by Harvard school. The outline of the simulation is based on two seating position i.e. bar and the dining area. The target of this restaurant based simulation is to boost utilization, nightly profit and throughput time by using batching strategy, size of bar and cycle time and different advertising scheme. Simulation consist of 6 challenges where only 1 to 3 factor can be changed in challenges 1 to 5 whereas challenge 6 is a combination of strategies to gain the maximum output i.e. nightly profit by using all possible factors from 5 previous challenges. I started simulation by testing all the possible outcomes from challenge 1 to 5 and used the best scenario from one simulation to the other step by step and drew the conclusion at the very end. CHALLENGE 1: The first challenge was to determine whether or not batching dining room customer was beneficial. Batching means that the parties must reach a number of eight before they are seated. Two scenarios from the simulation show that batching is a better strategy that helped to increase profit. Utilization of the restaurant capacity is largest while batching. We could place 8 people at single table rather than placing group of 5 at one and 3 at another. The number of customers that can be served at one time highly influences the profit. According to the simulation it is more beneficial to use batching as average profit is $83.64 compared to average profit of $282.29 when not batched. By using batching benihana restaurants are able to eliminate bottleneck that occurs in the waiting area/bar. By doing so they are able to see more customers in their restaurants which can be seen in the graphs to the right. They lose fewer customers and more diners are served. This data type s structure is in the format XYZWPR (X, Y, Z directional values in millimeters and their associated rotational elements around each axis, Yaw, Pitch and Roll in degrees) where each data item is REAL [1]. Additionally, the robot arm configuration is part of the positional data, and it is defined based on the positions of the robot wrist flip (flipped or not flipped), elbow orientation (up or down), and the direction the robot is facing (front or back). In analyzing Oscar Wilde s The Picture of Dorian Gray, concepts such as influence and the origin of evil in Dorian Gray play an exceptionally valuable role in understanding the motives of the characters. Throughout the course of the novel, Lord Henry remains the ultimate source of evil and uses deception and persuasion to poison Dorian from a naΓ―ve boy to a destructive monster. • 32. Pride And Prejudice By Elizabeth Bennet In today s society, young girls have been taught to believe in their perfect Cinderella wedding where they will marry their Prince Charming in a beautiful dress and eventually live happily ever after. The film industry portrays marriage as picture perfect, in which every girl has their dream wedding and true love always finds its way. Contrary to the media s view, marriage was not always a fairy tale because women had the responsibility to help provide for their family. During the English Regency period, young girls married for financial security and social benefits to improve their family s status. In Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet rebelled against this mainstream idea of marriage set by society, in order to marry for true love. Set during the Regency period, Pride and Prejudice focuses on the upbringing of women in a male dominated society in which marriage was the only escape from destitution. For women, the story emphasizes the major motives behind matrimony such as financial stability, social pressure, and passion, but it ultimately embodies the idea that females are capable of marrying for true love. In the following pages, this essay will first provide background information about society during the English Regency and the marriage customs set for women during this time period. This essay will then offer a brief summary of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Finally, this essay will analyze the various motives of marriages presented between ... Each period laid the foundation for the next, with changes and improvements to create a new order. China is one of the world s richest historical countries boasting of ancient civilization. China has a mysterious and long history, about 5,000 years. China traces her culture to a blend of small tribes like any other great civilizations of the world. These small original tribes expanded to what is China today. The history of China records that Xia Dynasty is the oldest dynasty with Yuanmou man being the oldest hominoid in China. The country also documents a number of eminent people who contributed to the nation s enrichment and development experienced today. However, this essay seeks to discuss the major changes in political structures, social and economic life that occurred during the Sui dynasty, the Tang dynasty and the Song dynasty in China. The Sui dynasty reigned from 581 618 A.D. The emperor built monasteries for both Buddhism and Daoism throughout the land, and appointed Buddhist monks as his key advisors. • 35. Persuasive Essay On Gifted Education Ward, 2005); President Obama s defunding of the Javits Act, as part of the federal budget in 2012 (Equity) (Stephens, 2011), and the passing of the TALENT Act under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in 2015 (NAGC, n.d.). In short, the federal government s support for gifted education has been inconsistent at best, and when compared to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which guarantees all children between the ages of three and twenty one with specifically identified disabilities a free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment in conformance with an Individualized Education Program (Ward, 2005, p. 58) funding and support by federal government is severely lacking (Brown, 2008; Ward, 2005). Nevertheless, the TALENT Act (2015) is encouraging for gifted education as it promotes professional development to support high ability students, seeks to recognize and respond to excellence gaps, makes student achievement data publicly available, and advocates for research and the distribution of research that supports best practices in gifted education (NAGC, n.d.). Likewise, the Javits Act continues to give hope to those who have been historically underrepresented in gifted education through the first of its two priorities, which is to support Initiatives [that] develop and scale up models serving students who are underrepresented in gifted and talented programs (USDOE, 2017). Nomination and Confirmatory Practices In Comparing Apples and Oranges: Fifteen years of definitions of giftedness in research, Carman (2013) identified nine gifted identification methods she found through reviewing 103 articles. These methods were intelligence tests (IQ), achievement tests, academic achievement (Grades), teacher, parent, counselor, and committee recommendation, extracurricular activities, and additional sources of evidence (i.e. Performance Based Assessments). Carman (2013) also wrote, in her article, that there appears to be some confusion between giftedness and intelligence since definitions of giftedness often align more with the latter than the former. The fact that there are blurred lines between these terms might explain why there has been an overreliance on IQ ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
