Effects of Caffeine
• We can separate into 2 types
1)Positive effects
2)Negative effects
• POSITIVE EFFECTS
• Alertness/Wakefullness-this happens
when caffeine blocks the Adenosine
receptors(which signals the brain to sleep)
• Pain relief-helps by blocking the pain
receptors(used for treating
headaches,migraines,dural puncture)
• Endurance-Helps to increase glycogen
usage by muscles
Mood- It enhances our mood by
increasing levels of dopamine which makes us
happy and productive!!
• Neurological conditions- It is prooved to
delay or prevent Alzheimers disease,also
Parkinsons and some hyperactivity disorders
• Cosmetics- Caffeine is used in a lot of
cosmetics nowadays due to its high
metabolism rate, also can protect the face
from UV-Rays, slowing down the ageing!
NEGATIVE EFFECTS
• Sleeplesness-Consuming caffeine at later
times in the evening may induce
sleeplessness effect.
• Shivering-Excess caffeine may cause slight
to severe shivering of hands or jerky
movements of hands
• Addiction-Caffeine may have addictive
effects on people and maybe lethal on
high dosage.
•
Anxiety-Caffeine is known to increase anxiety
of some people or worsen the situation for
people with stress disorders.
• Heart complications-Caffeine increases the
heart as a part of sympathetic interruption
which is dangerous for people with heart
problems which can make the heart enlarge.
• Blood pressure-Caffeine increases the blood
pressure with the help of stress hormones
SYMPTOMS
• We can divide these into two types of
symptoms,1) OVERDOSE SYMPTOMS and
2)WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS.
• Overdose symptoms shows us the effects
of excessive caffeine
• The withdrawal symptoms shows us the
effects of sudden cease of caffeine
OVERDOSE SYMPTOMS
• Restlessness
• High Bp
• Anxiety
• Nausea
• Arrhythmia
• Vomiting
• Dizziness
• Cardiac arrest, all of these happenning in
this order.
WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS
Headache (particularly behind the eyes,which
moves to the front of the head)
• Sleepiness
• Irritability
• Lethargy
• Muscle cramping and fidgyness
• Flu like symptoms
• Lack of concentration
• Brain fog
• Depression and constipation,Lack of
concentration
TREATMENT
Treatment of caffeine addiction at correct time
is very important.
• We have the caffeine detox therapies at
various health care/rehabilitation centres
• We have energy drinks which mimic the
action of caffeine.
• We have to slowly reduce the amount of
caffeine day by day.
• Then we have the various types of
medications which can be used to treat the
symptoms of overdose or withdrawl
