Brigada Eskwela is a program launched by the Department of Education that brings together teachers, parents, and community members every third week of May to prepare public schools for the upcoming school year. Volunteers conduct minor repairs, painting, and cleaning during this week-long event. In 2007, 90% of school communities participated in Brigada Eskwela, generating over $2.5 billion worth of support and volunteer hours. The program has proven effective at garnering support from corporations, organizations, and individuals to improve public education through partnership.

Vulnerability of Children in Disaster Situation

Urdaneta City Schools Division in the Philippines conducted its annual Brigada Eskwela school cleaning activity from May 30 to June 4, 2016 to prepare all 63 of its schools for the opening of the school year in June. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that hinder effective implementation of special needs education policies and management in Port Harcourt. Specifically, the study sought to investigate the correlation between inadequate funding and implementation special needs education policies and management. It was hypothesized that there is no significant relationship between inadequate funding and implementation of special needs education policies and management. Data were collected via structured questionnaire issued to 120 special education stakeholders which represents 94.1 percent of the population. The data were analyzed, and hypothesis tested using appropriate statistical tests including Pearson Product Moment Correlation Analysis in Statistical Package for Social Sciences SPSS software. The result revealed that inadequate funding had a mean of 13.73 and SD of 4.56 while implementation of special needs education policies and management had a mean of 12.32 and SD of 5.11. We further found that at p value of 0.002 and r = 0.49 inadequate funding was significantly related with implementation of special needs education policies and management. Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected with an affirmation that inadequate funding of education was a barrier to implementation of special needs education policies and management. The more there is lack of fund provision, the greater barrier it poses to the implementation of special needs education policies and management. The result concluded that adequate funding is very vital to implementing special needs education policies and management. The study recommended that Government, NGOs and individuals with philanthropic mindset should redirect their attention to providing the required funding that ensures cost effective special needs education for children with disabilities. Sierra Leone is a signatory to international protocols which obliges her to be committed to basic education being made free and compulsory. Laws, strategies and partnerships with donor communities have helped to significantly improve basic education. Challenges identified include: gender and rural disparities in access to education and pervasive poverty as key factors that inhibit it achieving the 100 percent enrolment for basic education for children. The paper ended by supporting the inclusion of the community in enhancing and sustaining basic education in the country.

Leveraging Generative AI to Drive Nonprofit Innovation

- 2. BRIGADA ESKWELA BACKGROUND The education of the Filipino youth is everybody’s concern. While government is tasked to provide free and quality education to every Filipino child and youth, the community where they grow is an important stakeholder in their education. The private sector, which will sooner or later employ these young Filipinos, is also an important stakeholder in their education. The successful collaboration of all these stakeholders is therefore pivotal in ensuring that Filipino children and youth go to school, remain in school and learn in school. It poses a great challenge to educational stakeholders. It was with this spirit of volunteerism and public-private partnership for education that Republic Act 8525, or the “Adopt-A-School Act” was made in 1998. Through the Adopt-A-School Program (ASP), private sector companies and professionalsare given the opportunity to contribute in improving the public education system of the country. To recognize their goodwill, they can avail of tax incentives of up to 150%. Over the yea rs, the Adopt-A-School Program has attracted more than 200 partners, generating some P6 billion worth of projects and interventions. In its effort to bring the spirit of the Adopt-A-School Program to the community level and maximize civil participation and utilize local resources to improve the public schools, the Department of Education launched the National Schools Maintenance Week in May 2003. Dubbed, Brigada Eskwela, the program brought together teachers, parents and community members every third week of May to work together in repairing and preparing public schools for school opening. In the spirit of bayanihan, private institutions/individuals and even the local government units contributed in generating resources for the effort. During the week-long event, volunteers take time out in doing minor repairs, painting, and cleaning of school campuses. In 2007 alone, Brigada Eskwela hita record high of 90% participation among school communities, generating more than P2.5 billion worth of support-inkind and volunteer man-hours. It has proven to continue to gain more mileage among communities, corporations, small-medium enterprises, government and non-government organizations and private individuals. Indeed, Brigada Eskwela is becoming DepEd’s model of genui ne public and private partnership in action. As the Department endeavors to solvethe many challenges facingPhilippineeducation,Brigada Eskwela will serve as one of its frontline initiatives reminding each and every Filipino that we are all stakeholders in education. 4. Recording of Daily Accomplishments Documentation is an integral part of Brigada Eskwela to be done by the Documentation Committee. This will provideinformation in monitoringthe school’s progress in accomplishingthe BE work plan. These data will also be the basis for the drafting and finalization of school’s accomplishment reports to be submitted to the district and division offices at the end of the Brigada Eskwela. What should be particularly documented/recorded for each day are: - all volunteers, including the nature and duration of their services/participation (BE Form 04) - all resources received (BE Form 05) - all works/tasks done (BE Form 06) For this purpose, make sure that the required BE Forms are accomplished. Photo or video documentations should also be done.
