Brigada Eskwela is an annual nationwide campaign in the country that focuses on the need for collective
action to support and improve the quality of education in the country. It is an initiative of the Department
of Education (DepEd) that mobilizes different sectors of society, such as parents, teachers, local government
units, non-government organizations, private corporations and individuals, in the preparation of public
school facilities for the opening of classes each school year.
The Brigada Eskwela is a manifestation of the Filipino people’s commitment to support the education sector
and ensure that all Filipino children have access to quality education. It is an example of the Filipino’s
persistence and determination to succeed despite the numerous challenges that we face as a nation.
The Brigada Eskwela is an endeavor that has been going on for several decades now. It was first
implemented in the late 1990s as part of the Department of Education’s efforts to improve the quality of
public schools in the country. The program was initially called “Operation Barrio School” and later renamed
as “Brigada Eskwela”. The program is also known as the National Schools Maintenance Week.
Brigada Eskwela has been instrumental in improving the state of public schools. It has provided a platform
for collective action and synergy amongst different stakeholders in the education sector. It has also helped
ensure that public schools are adequately prepared for the start of the school year.
Moreover, the Brigada Eskwela has also helped bring attention to the plight of public schools in the country.
Through the program, stakeholders are made aware of the lack of basic facilities and resources in public
schools and the need to address these issues. This has led to increased support for public schools, such as
increased funding and resources, as well as the formation of partnerships between the public and private
sectors in the education sector.
Furthermore, the Brigada Eskwela program has also helped build a sense of community and unity amongst
different stakeholders in the education sector. The program has encouraged stakeholders to work together
to ensure that all children have access to quality education. This has resulted in the establishment of various
programs and initiatives to address the different needs of school children, such as the provision of basic
school supplies, the establishment of libraries and computer laboratories, and the improvement of school
facilities.
All in all, the Brigada Eskwela is an important program that has helped improve the quality of education in
the Philippines. Its inculcate the “BAYANIHAN” values of the Filipino through the collective efforts of
the different stakeholders in the education sector, the program has helped ensure that all Filipino children
have access to quality education.
