Spreading Tumor Cell (CTC)
History of CTC
It has been long accepted that the spread of cancer to multiple organs occurs as a result of cancers
cells traveling from the primary site to the distant sites where they colonize and form a secondary
tumor. Logic dictates that the circulatory system holds the greatest potential to provide passage for
these cells to travel to distant sites. Once these cancer cells have gained access into the circulatory
system, they are referred to as circulating tumor cell (CTC).It has been a tough challenge to
effectively capture these culprits in the act. Large in part due to the inability of the technology of
the past, but with the present day breakthroughs in the fabrication of both biological and synthetic
products, a number of technologies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While it seems like this burgeoning field has only recently blossomed, its roots date back as far as
1869, with the first reported description of CTCs by Thomas Ashworth (Ashworth, 1869). After a
sparse trail of publications, early reports on methods for detecting CTCs via filtration (Salgado et
al., 1959) and sedimentation (Alexander and Spriggs, 1960) emerged nearly 100 years later.
Perhaps the most commonly used technique for detection today, immunomagnetic separation, was
not reported until 1998 (Racila et al., 1998). In addition to introducing a new detection method,
Racila et al. also demonstrated that CTCs exist early in disease and correlate with disease
progression e providing a new perspective on the potential role of CTCs in modern cancer research
and therapy. Today, researchers look to profiling components, including CTCs, in serial blood draws
(liquid biopsy) to transform the current landscape of cancer therapy by i) determining patient
prognosis, ii) monitoring tumor recurrence and therapeutic responses in real time, iii) identifying
new therapeutic targets, iv) elucidating drug resistance mechanisms, and v) improving our current
understanding of tumor progression and metastatic disease. Multiple studies have demonstrated that
elevated CTC counts indicate a poor prognosis for metastatic breast, prostate, colorectal, and lung
cancer patients (Cristofanilli et al., 2005; Smerage et al., 2014; de Bono et al., 2008; Cohen et al.,

The Daylight Is Dim, Dark, And Gloomy
The daylight is dim. Dark, and gloomy. The trees are dense and haunting. The tall lifeless trees
with bare broken limbs surround a lady with a babushka, black coat, and leather gloves. The lady
is looking down. Her emotionless face shows of a lady that has been suffering for a lifetime. The
younger lady next to her is a nunwearing a religious habit looking down and away. Her face shows
of sorrow as well. She looks as if she is praying and wondering how the world could be so cruel.
The trees are skinny and tall that tell a true story. The trees show the hatred, sorrow, poverty, and
hardships of the past. It s an eerie forest that looks as if it s from a fictional movie such as Harry
Potter or Lord of the Rings. It s as if a concentration camp would be near the forest if the scene was
25 years sooner. It s hardly a forest at all. It s a place where two ladies are sitting beside the grave
of their family. In comparison to newer movies in terms of audio and sounds Ida was plain.
There really wasn t a whole lot of talking. There wasn t really a need to as facial expressions and
just following the plot was enough to keep the viewer knowledge. The only music played was
when Ida and Wanda where listening to the jazz band. No background music was needed in this film
as real life noises was enough to keep the viewer aware. For example the city sounds of cars and
trains where heard when Ida and Wanda where driving through the city. Or when Ida and Wanda
where driving all you could

President John Tyler Essay
President John Tyler How many people actually know of the tenth president, John Tyler? Well, I
bet not very many so I am here to give some facts. Do you know where and when he was born?
Hmmm, I thought so. He was born on March 29, 1790, in Charles City County, Virginia. This fine
man graduated from the College of William and Mary at the age of seventeen. Not impress
enough? In addition, he went on to study law and became an employee for a prestigious law firm
in Richmond. At the age of twenty one, Tyler used his father s connections to obtain a position in
the Virginia House of Delegates. This southern aristocrat... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unsurprisingly enough, they did win and Harrison assumed presidency while Tyler became the
Vice President. Their slogan was Tippecanoe and Tyler too. Hmmm, doesn t that ring a bell? Are
you with me so far? No, not yet? Well, then, let me continue. Harrison gave his inaugural speech
out in the cold and wearing neither a coat nor a hat. Unfortunately, he became ill and died a
month later. Of course, Tyler immediately assumed into presidency. Considering this event was a
first in history, many felt that he was merely an acting or temporary president. He gained the
nicknames of His Accidency and Accidental President. Fear of alienation from Harrison s
supporters, His Accidency kept the entire cabinet although he knew there were a few that hated
his guts. He vetoed a bill of resurrecting the Bank of the United States, which made everyone
much more furious. Henry Clay expelled Tyler from the Whig Party, called him a traitor, and
attempted an impeachment. Daniel Webster in the other hand stayed and supported Tyler. Who s
a traitor now? Despite all the loathing, Tyler did not loose his confidence and stubbornness. He
knew what was right for the country and did not fear to use his power. After all, he was the
president. He also vetoed two bills for higher tariffs and worked on annexation of Texas. He signed
the Texas statehood bill into law on the first day of March 1845. The Americans

Introduction When the stock market goes up one day, and then goes down for the next five, then
up again, and then down again, that s what you call market volatility. Historically, the volatility of
the stock market is roughly 20% a year and 5.8% a month, but volatility keeps on changing, so we
go through periods of high volatility and low volatility. Analysts and experts have different opinions
about what you should do in volatile markets, and how to scope with stock market volatility or the
tendency for share prices rising and falling. Analysts. Justin Stewart, co founder of Seven

of thick black bean stew served with rice and a variety of pork meats. It was invented by the

There is no noise level while listening. My interpretation of White Rabbit is that the narrator
discusses how drugs can be used in defiance to escape authority. As mentioned above, White Rabbit
is influenced by Lewis Carroll s Alice in Wonderland and Alice through the Looking Glass.
The first verse argues that the world is in color, but that people in authority sometimes tries to
enforce that the world is either black or white. Since the general public out numbers those in
authority, they can lead a protest that can change the ways of society and the law. When the
protesters gain their victory, they can feel like their ten feet tall.
The second verse then process to discuss that not all protests are successful. In fact, some people
protest even though they may not necessary know the whole story and/or know that the protest will
fail. When questioned on why they are protesting, some may say that a leader had rallied them to a
cause. It is known that not all protests are peaceful, and that protesters may be harmed by anti
protest methods. During that time, they need to remember Alice s courage when she was just

The Causes And Abuse Of The Catholic Church
Catholic religion is one of the oldest religions, highly practiced in the United States. It is a
religion with a set of beliefs such as practicing celibacy among the priests and nuns. Each and
every state in America has several parishes and a bishop that oversees the operations of the
churches in those said regions. For instance, in the State of Phoenix, there is a bishopwith several
priests in every parish handling the operations of the churches. The Catholics follow a set of
beliefs and traditions that mirror the morality in the society. However, these beliefs are being
eroded by the some of the followers in various parts of the world. In fact, the Catholic Churchhas
become a subject of serious allegations of child sexual abuseat the hands of the clergy. Several
cases have occurred globally even the most high profile cases occurring in Europe and America.
Majority of the people ha come forward and reported the incidents of clerical sexual misconducts.
They have done so under investigative reporting talking about years of abuse on the part of the
priests together with cover ups and patterns of secrecy by church officials that aided in allowing
these accused priests in continuing to their ministries in the various parishes and this involved
interaction with mirrors. Canonical, civil, and criminal sanctions have been directed to several
bishops, priests, and even dioceses. However, there are those that have managed to escape the

Concept Analysis On Pain And Pain
Concept Analysis on Pain
Introduction
Pain is one of the most common challenging complains by patients. Pain in general is a very
uncomfortable feeling. Studies have shown that pain can affect the quality of life of individuals
(Ferrel, 1995). Over 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. This is the kind of pain that
lasts for more then 6 months. It can be mild or excruciating pain (Ratini, 2014). Nurse researchers
have spent the last 30 years trying to study pain management using both pain measurements and
outcomes of pain. Some studies have even shown that pain is not completely controlled even with
pharmacological agents (Wells, Pasero, McCaffery, 2008). Pain that is not managed adequately can
lead to adverse physical and psychological patient outcomes, for patients and their families (Wells,
Pasero, McCaffery, 2008).
Background
A person encompasses various types of pain throughout their life cycle, from birth to the end of
life. Pain experiences may include acute and chronic pain, pain from chronic conditions, or pain as
a symptom of a patient receiving palliative care. Pain is not just physiological but can be emotional,
psychosocial, or even spiritual. Due to the multiple advances in pain management. Nurses can have
inadequate information about pain management (Board of Nursing, 2001). Pain management is a
vital part of nursing. It is part is the 5th vital sign that nurses assess when they take their vital signs.

A Human Papillomavirus Vaccine
asil: A human papillomavirus vaccine
[GENERAL INTRODUCTION] The modern world is considerably lucky in the fact that
vaccinations have been created and made readily available thanks to Edward Jenner and his
development of the first vaccine for smallpox in 1796. Since the 18th century, there have been
about fifty different vaccines created to protect humans against bacterial and viral diseases. A
vaccine is a substance that can be administered through needle injections, by mouth, or by aerosol
to stimulate the production of antibodies and supply immunity against one or a few diseases. The
vaccine is prepared from the causative agent of a disease and is used to act as an antigen without
activating the disease. There are many different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Vaccinations to an individual are extremely beneficial, but there are many individuals who do not
believe in vaccines, too. This is when the vaccine herd effect becomes a vital role in vulnerable
populations at a high risk for obtaining infection. The vaccine herd effect, refers to the indirect
protection of unvaccinated persons, whereby an increase in the prevalence of immunity by the
vaccine prevents circulation of infectious agents in susceptible populations. (Kim, et al. 2011) The
herd effect has been a major reason for the abolition of smallpox and the protection against influenza
and pneumococcal disease since the vaccinated individuals have spread the vaccine benefits to
unvaccinated people. Early vaccinations were primarily attenuated or inactivated, but over time and
with advancements in immunology, biochemistry, and molecule biology, there have been new
strategies implemented in the development of vaccines. An article in the Brazilian Journal of
Medical and Biological Research discusses the use of recombinant proteins which allows the
targeting of immune responses focused against protective antigens. There are, a variety of
expression systems with different advantages, allowing the production of large quantities of
proteins depending on the required characteristics. Live recombinant bacteria or viral vectors
effectively stimulate the immune system as in natural infections and have intrinsic adjuvant
properties. (Nascimento and Leite, 2012). The recombinant

Essay on Real Estate Agent
Real Estate Agent
Buying or selling a house or an apartment is one of the biggest decisions of a person s life. And
when selling or establishing a price for real estate, people seek out real estate agents to do the dirty
work. A real estate agent has to convince a prospective homeowner that he or she is trustworthy and
knowledgeable. In many ways, the agent acts as a counselor to individuals and families about to
embark on a huge commitment. Real estate agents have a thorough knowledge or real estate market

Advancement opportunities for agents often take the form of higher commission rates and more
and larger sales, both of which increase earnings. This occurs as agents gain expertise and contacts,
and become more efficient in closing a greater number of transactions. Experienced agents can also
advance in many large firms to managerial positions. And people who have received their broker s
licenses can open their own offices.
Others with experience and training in estimating property value may become real estate
appraisers, and people familiar with operating and maintaining rental properties may become
property managers. Also, a gents, brokers, and appraisers who gain general experience in real
estate and a thorough knowledge of business conditions and property values in their localities, may
enter mortgage financing or real estate investment counseling. Employment of real estate agents is
expected to grow more slowly, however, a large number of job openings will arise due to
replacement needs. Agents who usually worked full time had median annual earnings of $31,500.

To be a successful enterprise, one must be willing to take risks and try new things. Within the last
century, education has attempted to take a leap of faith by completely flipping the traditional
school schedule and idea of summer vacation upside down. Just as with any idea, there are
advantages and disadvantages as well as supporters and opponents. Each district must look at their

The third schedule consists of 6 terms each consisting of 43 days. Students attend two terms and
then get a term off.
Some advantages of year round schooling include improved achievement, improved attendance by
both teachers and students, reduced discipline problems, lower teacher stress, increased motivation
due to frequent breaks, and increased opportunities for enrichment (Palmer and Bemis). During the
two week breaks in between school sessions, students have the opportunity to take classes on
karate, ballet, photography, cooking, and swimming. This intersession provides time for hands on,
big project classes that get kids involved in topics that interest them. Intersession can also be used
as an intervention for students who are falling behind. Karl Alexander, sociology professor at Johns
Hopkins University, studied 800 students for more than 20 years in Baltimore s elementary
schools. He found that by ninth grade, low income students had fallen 3 ВЅ grade levels behind
their middle class peers. And most of that gap was attributable to learning lost over the long
traditional summer (Schulte, 2009). The biggest driving force and proponent of year round
schooling is the effect of the summer slide. Students lose two months of achievement in math skills
and students from low income families lose more than two months in reading achievement

American Rust In The New Geography Of Jobs Chapter Summary
1.In one paragraph, summarize the thesis and main points of chapter 1 American Rust in The New
Geography of Jobs
Chapter One of the New Geography of Jobs, titled American Rust, focuses on the fall of
manufacturing employment in the US. Although manufacturing jobs pulled America out of the
Great Depression and led to a period of stability and increased consumerism, in 1979, it stopped
being an engine of prosperity. While the fall of the manufacturing sector is often blamed on banks
and financiers, the real reasons are globalization and technological progress. Implementation of the
theory of comparative advantage led to a contraction of certain manufacturing industries in America
and led trade to take place instead. With the rise of globalization, ... Show more content on

I was surprised by the number of consequent jobs that innovation created for the local economy.
Moretti goes on to explain that the job requirements of the newly created jobs match a varying
range of qualifications, from doctors to waiters. This demonstrated to me that every type of
worker, regardless of his/her skill level, benefit from a larger presence of innovation. I was
surprised to learn the level of dependency of the entire economy on the innovation sector. This new
information deepened my prejudice against Trump s heavy emphasis on bringing manufacturing
jobs back to the US. He has been capitalizing on blue collar workers infatuation with manufacturing
and trying to revive an industry that lost a good deal of jobs to automation when instead, he could
be focusing on innovation. Innovation could lead to jobs for non college educated white men who
have been hurt the most by globalization and manufacturing

Crime And Punishment By Fyodor Dostoevsky
In Fyodor Dostoevsky s novel Crime and Punishment, great attention is paid to Raskolnikov s
inner life, yet it is equally important to attend to those outside forces that affect him. A significant
but overlooked part of the novel, then, is how the city of St. Petersburg affects Raskolnikov.
Through my reading, I found it interesting that Raskolnikov regularly traverses the city s bridges
and uses them as a place for reflection. Overall, there are twenty five appearances of the word
bridge in the novel, and so they appear in many different situations, holding many different
purposes. First and foremost, they serve as an important narrativedevice: they provide geographical
context, split up scenes, and provide scenes with emphasis by... Show more content on

Psychologically, however, this scene is significant because it establishes the bridge as a place of
introspection. In this case, it highlights Raskolnikov s confusion, which only further contextualizes
his frail emotional and mental state after the murder. Thus, this bridge scene serves as a simple yet
concrete way to advance the plot while conveying Raskolnikov s mental state.
Another scene exemplifying this dual role of bridges occurs during Part Two when Raskolnikov
watches a woman attempt to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge. Notably, this scene begins
with descriptive imagery of Raskolnikov s surroundings: he notices the last pink gleams of the
sunset on some houses, blazing as if aflame... (168 169). This provides a contrast to the more
depressing descriptions of the city found regularly; earlier in the chapter, for example,
Raskolnikov is described to inhale the stinking, dusty, city infected air (154). Thus, in a sense, the
bridge can be a place of life and beauty. This mood changes, however, after the woman attempts to
take her life. In the aftermath, the narrator reports that Raskolnikov looks upon it all with a strange
feeling of indifference and detachment. It was disgusting to him (170). Narratively, this scene is
significant as it contains the sub story of the woman, made possible by the bridge, but there is more
to this scene than that. The narrator

Meaning Of Valley Forge By Tohmas Paine
The line that Tohmas Paine wrote These are the times that try men s souls has much meaning to
the revolutionary war. It was written at first as a morale booster during Valley Forge. The line
was in a book called the Crisis which was written to boost morale, and this line in particular
showed that they know that times are tough and that they really need to get out of this, but we
couldn t do it without the people. In Valley Forge, the men were losing morale because they had
little to no food and were basicly trapped. The line was meant to help show the men that they were
needed, but this line really related to the whole war though, because things were not looking too

The Physics Of Continuum Mechanics
In continuum mechanics, a Newtonian Fluids is a fluid that the viscous stress arising from its
flow, at every point, are linearly proportional to the local strain rate. The reason we research
Newtonian Fluids is that Newtonian fluids are the simplest mathematical models of fluids that
account for viscosity. In natural world, there are many common liquids and gases that can be
assumed to be Newtonian Fluids. For example, water, alcohol, thin oil, air, and most of pure
liquids. Newtonian fluids get the name by Isaac Newton, who is one of the most famous scientists
in the world. He is the first person who found the relation between the rate of shear strain and shear
stressfor such fluids in differential form. Newtonian Fluids can be also called linearly viscous fluid,
which has been found to describe adequately the mechanical behavior of many real fluids under a
wide range of situations. In order to study Newtonian Fluids, we need to understand the concept of
fluids.
A liquid is a nearly incompressible fluid that will suit to the its container s shape. However, its
volume always independent of pressure. There are four basic states of matter. They are solid,
gas, plasma, and liquid. Besides, Liquid is the only state with a definite volume but no fixed
shape. Water is the most common liquid on Earth. Liquid and gas are similar in many ways. Both
of them can flow and take the shape of a container. However, most liquids cannot be compressed as
others. Also liquids will not to

How Is Sonnet 21 Allegory
The Aspect of Love as Anoesis (pure), and Assertion (certain) and equal acceptance
There is nothing sweeter than a love as pure as gold and a love lovelier than a man s certainty of
emotions towards a woman. Indeed in Elizabeth Browning s Sonnet 21, it portrays the assurance of
an individual s declaration of love. It also gives you an idea about the purity and loyalty of Robert

Analysis Of After Apple Picking By Robert Frost
After Apple Picking is an early work by Robert Frost. The poem portrays the hypnagogia of sleep
by describing the fleeting moments before the speaker falls into deep slumber. The poem is
written in the first person point of view and is most likely a depiction of Frost himself. Frost
wrote this poem when he was around forty to fifty years old. In the twentieth century, he would
have been considered to be close to the end of his life and this could have been his initial
inspiration for the poem. Allusions to winter and frost also lead to the idea that Robert Frost may
have been referring to himself throughout the poem. Whether or not the speaker is Frost is of little
importance, what does matter is that the speaker is someone who has... Show more content on

The mid level diction, that dominates most of the poem, is highlighted in these first couple of
lines. This level of diction creates a happy tone that celebrates heaven and the afterlife while
contemplating the reality of life here on earth. Phrases such as I was well and I could tell create a
sense of rhyme and repetition that assures us that the speaker is still in control and doing fine,
this initial portrayal of the speaker conflicts with the rest of the poem which takes on a more
melancholy mood after line eighteen. Visual and olfactory imagery are also portrayed through
specific word choice. Words such as essence and scent introduce the element of smell in the
poem, while words such as glass, skimmed, and hoary convey the visual element. The vivid
pastoral sensory imagery in the poem emphasizes the image of an apple, this motif alludes to the
fall in Genesis and becomes an allegory for the Garden of Eden. Likewise, the speaker s thoughts
of falling ice allude to Freud s iceberg personality theory. These allusions suggest both worldly
corruption and a loss of innocence. This is emphasized through the repetition of the word fall,
which in this case has the connotation of sin associated with it. The imagery used here also draws
biblical allusions to Jacob s ladder. The allusions draw attention to the corruption and downfall of
mankind. Through the use of figurative language, the extended metaphor of apple

The Causes of Eating Disorders Essay
The Causes of Eating Disorders
There is no single cause for eating disorders. A number of factors, including cultural and family
pressures, chemical imbalances, and emotional and personality disorders collaborate to produce
both anorexia and bulimia, although each disorder is determined by different combinations of these
influences. Genetics may also play a small role.
Between 40% to 96% of all eating disordered patients experience depression and anxiety disorders;
depression is also common in families of patients with eating disorders. Bulimic patients are more
likely to report having emotional disorders and dysfunctional families than are anorexic restrictor
patients. It is not clear, however, whether emotional disorders are... Show more content on

Seasonality often affects both depression and eating disorders. In many people, depression is
more severe in darker winter months. Similarly, a subgroup of bulimic patients suffer from a
specific form of bulimia that worsens in winter and fall; such patients are more apt to have started
bingeing at an earlier age and to binge more frequently than those whose bulimia is more
consistent year round. Onset of anorexia appears to peak in May, which is also the peak month for
suicide.
Anxiety disorders are very common in anorexia and bulimia. Phobias and obsessive compulsive
disorder (OCD) usually precede the onset of the eating disorder, while panic disorder tends to
follow. Social phobias, in which a person is fearful about being humiliated in public, are common
in both eating disorders. People with anorexia are especially prone to obsessive compulsive
disorder. Obsessions are recurrent or persistent mental images, thoughts, or ideas, which may result
in compulsive behavior repetitive, rigid, and self prescribed routines that are intended to prevent
the manifestation of the obsession. Women with anorexia may become obsessed with exercise,
dieting, and food. They often develop compulsive rituals e.g., weighing every bit of food, cutting it
into tiny pieces, or putting it into tiny containers. The presence of OCD with either anorexia or
bulimia does not

The Most Influential Thinkers Of The German Enlightenment Era
Immanuel Kant was born April 22, 1724 in Königsberg. Kant is considered one of the most
influential thinkers of the German Enlightenment era. He could easily be labeled one of the
greatest and most important Western philosophers of all time.
Kant was born the fourth of nine children to Johann and Anna Kant. His father was a harness
maker, and the large family lived a rather humble life. The family practiced Pietism, an 18th century
branch of the Lutheran Church. As a result of this, Kant s early education was at Saint George s
Hospital School and then Collegium Fredericianum, a Pietist school.
In 1740, Kant entered at the University of Königsberg where he enrolled as a theology student.
Six years later, the death of Kant s father left him without income to continue his education and
forced him to leave the university. For the next ten years, Kant worked as a private tutor for wealthy
families. During this time away from school, Kant published numerous papers dealing with
scientific questions surrounding rationalism and empiricism. The most important being General
Natural History of Theory of the Heavens, which he published in 1755. In this work, Kant talks
about the origin of the solar system and concludes it was a result of gravitational connection of
atoms. After his publication and returning to school to receive his doctorate of philosophy, Kant
spent the next fifteen years as a lecturer and tutor for the University of Königsberg. Even with the

of Burlington, when for the first time the concept of Iranian nationality was inserted to the
exhibition theme, nothing emancipatory happened to the art of the Muslims. Moreover this time
the exhibition had a greater aesthetic cause and Islamic art had been considered as a subdivision of
the art of the Persian nation. Burlington exhibition like its other European and American
counterparts was not simply an introductory show for the curious eyes of the European who were
either looking for different exotic artifacts to invent a new trend or making accurate estimations for
their antique collection. Along with other exhibitions it contributed to the formation of a discipline;
however before the authentic academic purposes, it was in the service of constructing a strong
national identity for Iranians who were trying to gain recognition with the help of cultural capitals.

As one of the unprecedented comprehensive works based on the Persian art history, few years
after the Burlington exhibition Pope introduced his major work a survey of Persian art in ten
volumes. In other words not only his immense support of Persian art was critical to the
construction of a collective psyche for Iranian but also his academic bias about the authenticity of
Persian Islamic art which originated in his deep obsession with the Persian version of Islamic art
inherited directly to the contemporary Iranian critics, which I am going to discuss about it later in

The Importance Of A Professional Portfolio Managers
Emotional Knowledge is Key to Investment Success
Understanding emotions and how we process information to make decisions is vital to investment
success. This is true whether you manage your own portfolio or whether you have hired a
professional portfolio manager to handle the task. The sad reality is that most professional money
managers don t understand that their emotional judgements are likely harmful to portfolio
performance. Professional money managers are at the mercy of the investor s behavioral biases
without even realizing it. For example, if a professional money manager believes in investing for
the long term knowing that he will suffer from underperformance from time to time, he may not
realize it but when he begins to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These are automatic and we generally have no control over them. System 1 is what gets us in
trouble when we are making investment decision based on probability. System 1 can also be
learned skills such as mathematics. When I ask you what 2 + 2 equals you likely did not
hesitate one instant. It was automatic and effortless. System 2 requires attention and effort.
When I ask you what 23 x 56 equals you first hesitate then begin to work through the problem. It
requires you to draw on skills you do not use every day. System 1 is generally good at making
decisions based on initial reactions however it is biased and has little understanding of logic or
statistics. Both systems fight for our attention and we generally allow system 1 to overpower
system 2 since we know system 2 is lazy. Here is an example of the laziness of system 2 from the
book, Thinking Fast and Slow , by Daniel Kahneman.
A bat and ball cost $1.10
The bat costs one dollar more than the ball.
How much does the ball cost?
The first number that comes to your mind is from system 1. I am guessing that most people have
guessed $0.10, which is wrong. Now that I have told you that it is wrong you system 2 will kick
in to try and figure out the true answer. The true answer is $0.05. If the bat costs one dollar more
than the ball it will cost $1.05 and the ball will

  • 2. Spreading Tumor Cell (CTC) History of CTC It has been long accepted that the spread of cancer to multiple organs occurs as a result of cancers cells traveling from the primary site to the distant sites where they colonize and form a secondary tumor. Logic dictates that the circulatory system holds the greatest potential to provide passage for these cells to travel to distant sites. Once these cancer cells have gained access into the circulatory system, they are referred to as circulating tumor cell (CTC).It has been a tough challenge to effectively capture these culprits in the act. Large in part due to the inability of the technology of the past, but with the present day breakthroughs in the fabrication of both biological and synthetic products, a number of technologies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While it seems like this burgeoning field has only recently blossomed, its roots date back as far as 1869, with the first reported description of CTCs by Thomas Ashworth (Ashworth, 1869). After a sparse trail of publications, early reports on methods for detecting CTCs via filtration (Salgado et al., 1959) and sedimentation (Alexander and Spriggs, 1960) emerged nearly 100 years later. Perhaps the most commonly used technique for detection today, immunomagnetic separation, was not reported until 1998 (Racila et al., 1998). In addition to introducing a new detection method, Racila et al. also demonstrated that CTCs exist early in disease and correlate with disease progression e providing a new perspective on the potential role of CTCs in modern cancer research and therapy. Today, researchers look to profiling components, including CTCs, in serial blood draws (liquid biopsy) to transform the current landscape of cancer therapy by i) determining patient prognosis, ii) monitoring tumor recurrence and therapeutic responses in real time, iii) identifying new therapeutic targets, iv) elucidating drug resistance mechanisms, and v) improving our current understanding of tumor progression and metastatic disease. Multiple studies have demonstrated that elevated CTC counts indicate a poor prognosis for metastatic breast, prostate, colorectal, and lung cancer patients (Cristofanilli et al., 2005; Smerage et al., 2014; de Bono et al., 2008; Cohen et al., 2008; Miller et al., 2010; Krebs et al., ... The tall lifeless trees with bare broken limbs surround a lady with a babushka, black coat, and leather gloves. The lady is looking down. Her emotionless face shows of a lady that has been suffering for a lifetime. The younger lady next to her is a nunwearing a religious habit looking down and away. Her face shows of sorrow as well. She looks as if she is praying and wondering how the world could be so cruel. The trees are skinny and tall that tell a true story. The trees show the hatred, sorrow, poverty, and hardships of the past. It s an eerie forest that looks as if it s from a fictional movie such as Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. It s as if a concentration camp would be near the forest if the scene was 25 years sooner. It s hardly a forest at all. It s a place where two ladies are sitting beside the grave of their family. Unsurprisingly enough, they did win and Harrison assumed presidency while Tyler became the Vice President. Their slogan was Tippecanoe and Tyler too. Hmmm, doesn t that ring a bell? Are you with me so far? No, not yet? Well, then, let me continue. Harrison gave his inaugural speech out in the cold and wearing neither a coat nor a hat. Unfortunately, he became ill and died a month later. Of course, Tyler immediately assumed into presidency. Considering this event was a first in history, many felt that he was merely an acting or temporary president. He gained the nicknames of His Accidency and Accidental President. Fear of alienation from Harrison s supporters, His Accidency kept the entire cabinet although he knew there were a few that hated his guts. He vetoed a bill of resurrecting the Bank of the United States, which made everyone much more furious. Henry Clay expelled Tyler from the Whig Party, called him a traitor, and attempted an impeachment. Daniel Webster in the other hand stayed and supported Tyler. Who s a traitor now? Despite all the loathing, Tyler did not loose his confidence and stubbornness. He knew what was right for the country and did not fear to use his power. After all, he was the president. He also vetoed two bills for higher tariffs and worked on annexation of Texas. He signed the Texas statehood bill into law on the first day of March 1845. The Americans ... My interpretation of White Rabbit is that the narrator discusses how drugs can be used in defiance to escape authority. As mentioned above, White Rabbit is influenced by Lewis Carroll s Alice in Wonderland and Alice through the Looking Glass. The first verse argues that the world is in color, but that people in authority sometimes tries to enforce that the world is either black or white. Since the general public out numbers those in authority, they can lead a protest that can change the ways of society and the law. When the protesters gain their victory, they can feel like their ten feet tall. The second verse then process to discuss that not all protests are successful. In fact, some people protest even though they may not necessary know the whole story and/or know that the protest will fail. When questioned on why they are protesting, some may say that a leader had rallied them to a cause. It is known that not all protests are peaceful, and that protesters may be harmed by anti protest methods. During that time, they need to remember Alice s courage when she was just ... • 9. Concept Analysis On Pain And Pain Concept Analysis on Pain Introduction Pain is one of the most common challenging complains by patients. Pain in general is a very uncomfortable feeling. Studies have shown that pain can affect the quality of life of individuals (Ferrel, 1995). Over 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. This is the kind of pain that lasts for more then 6 months. It can be mild or excruciating pain (Ratini, 2014). Nurse researchers have spent the last 30 years trying to study pain management using both pain measurements and outcomes of pain. Some studies have even shown that pain is not completely controlled even with pharmacological agents (Wells, Pasero, McCaffery, 2008). Pain that is not managed adequately can lead to adverse physical and psychological patient outcomes, for patients and their families (Wells, Pasero, McCaffery, 2008). Background A person encompasses various types of pain throughout their life cycle, from birth to the end of life. A Human Papillomavirus Vaccine asil: A human papillomavirus vaccine [GENERAL INTRODUCTION] The modern world is considerably lucky in the fact that vaccinations have been created and made readily available thanks to Edward Jenner and his development of the first vaccine for smallpox in 1796. Since the 18th century, there have been about fifty different vaccines created to protect humans against bacterial and viral diseases. A vaccine is a substance that can be administered through needle injections, by mouth, or by aerosol to stimulate the production of antibodies and supply immunity against one or a few diseases. The vaccine is prepared from the causative agent of a disease and is used to act as an antigen without activating the disease. There are many different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Vaccinations to an individual are extremely beneficial, but there are many individuals who do not believe in vaccines, too. This is when the vaccine herd effect becomes a vital role in vulnerable populations at a high risk for obtaining infection. The vaccine herd effect, refers to the indirect protection of unvaccinated persons, whereby an increase in the prevalence of immunity by the vaccine prevents circulation of infectious agents in susceptible populations. (Kim, et al. 2011) The herd effect has been a major reason for the abolition of smallpox and the protection against influenza and pneumococcal disease since the vaccinated individuals have spread the vaccine benefits to unvaccinated people. Early vaccinations were primarily attenuated or inactivated, but over time and with advancements in immunology, biochemistry, and molecule biology, there have been new strategies implemented in the development of vaccines. An article in the Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research discusses the use of recombinant proteins which allows the targeting of immune responses focused against protective antigens. There are, a variety of expression systems with different advantages, allowing the production of large quantities of proteins depending on the required characteristics. Live recombinant bacteria or viral vectors effectively stimulate the immune system as in natural infections and have intrinsic adjuvant properties. (Nascimento and Leite, 2012). The recombinant ... Crime And Punishment By Fyodor Dostoevsky In Fyodor Dostoevsky s novel Crime and Punishment, great attention is paid to Raskolnikov s inner life, yet it is equally important to attend to those outside forces that affect him. A significant but overlooked part of the novel, then, is how the city of St. Petersburg affects Raskolnikov. Through my reading, I found it interesting that Raskolnikov regularly traverses the city s bridges and uses them as a place for reflection. Overall, there are twenty five appearances of the word bridge in the novel, and so they appear in many different situations, holding many different purposes. First and foremost, they serve as an important narrativedevice: they provide geographical context, split up scenes, and provide scenes with emphasis by... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Psychologically, however, this scene is significant because it establishes the bridge as a place of introspection. In this case, it highlights Raskolnikov s confusion, which only further contextualizes his frail emotional and mental state after the murder. Thus, this bridge scene serves as a simple yet concrete way to advance the plot while conveying Raskolnikov s mental state. Another scene exemplifying this dual role of bridges occurs during Part Two when Raskolnikov watches a woman attempt to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge. Notably, this scene begins with descriptive imagery of Raskolnikov s surroundings: he notices the last pink gleams of the sunset on some houses, blazing as if aflame... (168 169). This provides a contrast to the more depressing descriptions of the city found regularly; earlier in the chapter, for example, Raskolnikov is described to inhale the stinking, dusty, city infected air (154). Thus, in a sense, the bridge can be a place of life and beauty. This mood changes, however, after the woman attempts to take her life. In the aftermath, the narrator reports that Raskolnikov looks upon it all with a strange feeling of indifference and detachment. It was disgusting to him (170). Narratively, this scene is significant as it contains the sub story of the woman, made possible by the bridge, but there is more to this scene than that. The narrator ... The Physics Of Continuum Mechanics In continuum mechanics, a Newtonian Fluids is a fluid that the viscous stress arising from its flow, at every point, are linearly proportional to the local strain rate. The reason we research Newtonian Fluids is that Newtonian fluids are the simplest mathematical models of fluids that account for viscosity. In natural world, there are many common liquids and gases that can be assumed to be Newtonian Fluids. For example, water, alcohol, thin oil, air, and most of pure liquids. Newtonian fluids get the name by Isaac Newton, who is one of the most famous scientists in the world. Newtonian Fluids can be also called linearly viscous fluid, which has been found to describe adequately the mechanical behavior of many real fluids under a wide range of situations. In order to study Newtonian Fluids, we need to understand the concept of fluids. A liquid is a nearly incompressible fluid that will suit to the its container s shape. It was still like driving a car wearing a blindfold. Knowing I struggle with spelling and grammar, I am determined to accomplish this class due to my personal and professional growth depending on it. I started this English class because I needed the credit to have my two year degree, not to become a journalist. I have never enjoyed English, I am not one to put my feelings on paper and do not enjoy the hours of dreading writing a long paper with a due date. I feel I am a detailed person that cannot make it sound correct on paper. Lacking confidence plays a major role in the writing process. Although my papers started a bit scattered, ... Looking at them now I understand both drafts were a mess. I did not have a clue on how to research and could not figure out what to do in my revision to elucidate my topic. With both papers being so scattered I was lost, not summarizing, or quoting sources. I had read the research, but I did not use it to support my ideas clearly. Revising my paper, Ms. Bowers responds that Tornadoes was a much better paper itself, although, I had made it to original. I should have caught these problems while revising. While revising the drafts I should have caught not being focused which made these papers such a mess with numerous punctuation errors. Still confused I got out my books and notes. Finally, it clicked with me. I had been trying to craft a formal paper, moderate was just what I needed. I had to clear my mind, stop stressing, and be more focused. By doing these revisions, both essays made more sense to me. I had been trying to reach the 1500 word limit which was causing me to write a lot of nonsense causing my readers along with myself to get lost and lose interest. For examples in Redneck I had included a full song, along with much unnecessary information. After the battles of Lexington and Concord the colonists had a better understanding of what was needed to defeat the British. Among the benefits of fusion power is that fusion fuel is readily available, power produced is reliable, has a low environmental impact, does not produce fissile materials, and carries the same terror risk as conventional fossil fuel plants [6]. To understand why some of these benefits are true, an understanding of the science behind nuclear fusion is necessary. To start, nuclear reactions involve the protons and neutrons contained in the nucleus of an atom. This is different from how chemical reactions, like the burning of fossil fuels, involve the electrons of an atom. In nuclear fission reactions, heavier elements are torn apart. Evolution Of Animal Research Paper Animal Phylum Evolution In this research paper, I m going to be discussing the evolution of animals and how things have changed to make them more complex throughout history. I m going to discuss what types of phyla there are and how their body systems work. First, I m going to discuss is the phyla Protists. Some protists are autotrophs, a photosynthetic group of phyla referred to as the algae. Some protists are heterotrophs. Heterotrophs get their energy by consuming other organisms. Protists reproduce asexually by binary fission, and a few species are capable of sexual reproduction. Protists are so small they don t have any special organs to exchange gases or get rid of waste. They rely on diffusion which is movement from a high concentration ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It s the first phyla most people are familiar with. The phylum is made up of mostly vertebrates. All chordates have pharyngeal slits (filter feeding organs), dorsal nerve cord (hollow cord to the notochord), notochord (a skeletal rod supporting the body) and a post anal tail (a body part that runs past the anal opening.) They have a brain and a central nervous system. As for their digestive system, they have a 1 way stomach. Now we have the seventh phyla, Osteichthyes and Chondrichthyes. Osteichthyes have a bony exoskeleton. They have gills that are covered by operculum. They have a swim bladder and fertilization is external for them. Examples of osteichthyes are salmon, sea horse and trout. Chondrichthyes have some differences. Their endoskeleton is made of cartilage. Their gills are exposed to the outside, they do not have a swim bladder. Lastly their fertilization is internal. Examples of chondrichthyes are sharks and rays. They both have a two chambered heart. They both have a 1 way stomach track. Next, we have the phylum Aves as our eighth phyla. Aves are birds. All aves are endothermic and warm blooded animals. They lay eggs that hard and waterproof. Instead of teeth they have a beak or a bill. Aves are bipedal which means they only walk on two legs. Their forelimbs are developed into wings and most members of the phyla are highly adapted for ... • 40. The Most Influential Thinkers Of The German Enlightenment Era Immanuel Kant was born April 22, 1724 in KГ¶nigsberg. Kant is considered one of the most influential thinkers of the German Enlightenment era. He could easily be labeled one of the greatest and most important Western philosophers of all time. Kant was born the fourth of nine children to Johann and Anna Kant. His father was a harness maker, and the large family lived a rather humble life. The family practiced Pietism, an 18th century branch of the Lutheran Church. As a result of this, Kant s early education was at Saint George s Hospital School and then Collegium Fredericianum, a Pietist school. In 1740, Kant entered at the University of KГ¶nigsberg where he enrolled as a theology student. Six years later, the death of Kant s father left him without income to continue his education and forced him to leave the university. For the next ten years, Kant worked as a private tutor for wealthy families. During this time away from school, Kant published numerous papers dealing with scientific questions surrounding rationalism and empiricism. The most important being General Natural History of Theory of the Heavens, which he published in 1755. In this work, Kant talks about the origin of the solar system and concludes it was a result of gravitational connection of atoms. After his publication and returning to school to receive his doctorate of philosophy, Kant spent the next fifteen years as a lecturer and tutor for the University of KГ¶nigsberg.
