This document discusses the key issues around the branding of yoga in America. It provides background on important yoga figures like Bikram Choudhury and Tara Stiles and organizations like the Hindu American Foundation and Yoga Journal. While yoga has roots in Hindu philosophy, evidence shows it predates and is also part of other religions. Branding yoga has increased its popularity in America but also risks over-commercialization. Overall, the document concludes that branding is justified due to the benefits of raising awareness, increasing diversity and choice, while acknowledging risks around commercialization and patenting need to be managed.

Case Studies (CS) – 10% marks
There are many excellent long and short case studies found throughout Stone’s book relating to the various sections and chapters of the text. Students will be required to work on these case studies, with the view to better understand the various HR theories and concepts and also to prepare them for their final examination. The facilitator will chose and then allocate the case studies for each group during week 2 for class presentations from weeks 7/8 and 9. The time for each presentation may vary from 10 to 20 minutes followed by class discussions. The group’s power-point presentations, both soft and hard copies, must be submitted to the course facilitator on or before the presentation. No written report is required for CS. The class and the facilitator will evaluate each group’s presentation. A blank evaluation form will be made available in class and posted in Moodle. However, the facilitator has the final say in terms of the final marks to be allocated to each group. The criteria to be used as a guide for evaluating the CS presentations is provided in the blank evaluation form.

This is the real secret of the yoga practice. When we learn not only to breathe with the postures, but actually breathe them, we can enter into a place where our focus and attention is so unified that there’s nowhere else to be but inside our bodies. This is the root meaning of yoga in Sanskrit: “union.” This can be such a sweet experience that a friend of mine once described it as “the feeling of someone brushing your fur in the right direction.” That might sound nuts—until you try it. Here’s how:
First you must understand that breath already is movement. Take a deep breath and notice what happens. On the inhale, you get a little bigger, and more expansive: your belly and chest rise. As you exhale, you get a little smaller, a little denser: your belly and chest contract. The inhale has an upward flowing energy, called prana. The exhale is a downward flowing energy called apana.
Over five thousand years ago, the Indus-Sarasvati civilization in the northern region of India was responsible for the early development of the history of yoga. The Rig Veda, one of the earliest and most revered books, is when the term yoga was originally stated.
Adi Shankaracharya life history and his teachings
Adi Shankaracharya was an 8th-century Indian philosopher and theologian who is widely regarded as one of the most influential thinkers in the history of Hinduism. He is credited with reviving and reorganizing Hinduism, and for his contributions to the development of Advaita Vedanta, one of the major schools of Hindu philosophy.
Adi Shankaracharya was born in a Brahmin family in the southern Indian state of Kerala. At a young age, he displayed remarkable intelligence and a deep interest in spirituality. He became a disciple of a renowned spiritual teacher, Govinda Bhagavatpada, who initiated him into the teachings of Vedanta.
At the age of 16, Adi Shankaracharya left home to travel across India, engage in spiritual practices, and engage in philosophical debates with scholars of other schools of thought. Over the course of his travels, he wrote numerous commentaries on the ancient Hindu scriptures, including the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Brahma Sutras.
Adi Shankaracharya's teachings emphasized the importance of realizing the oneness of the individual self (Atman) with the universal self (Brahman). He believed that the ultimate goal of human life was to achieve liberation (moksha) from the cycle of birth and death, and that this could be accomplished through the practice of spiritual disciplines such as meditation, self-inquiry, and devotion to God.
One of Adi Shankaracharya's most famous teachings is the doctrine of Maya, which holds that the world is an illusion created by the mind, and that true reality lies beyond the realm of the senses. He also emphasized the importance of selfless service to others, and believed that spiritual practice should be grounded in a commitment to social justice and the betterment of society as a whole.
Adi Shankaracharya's influence on Hinduism and Indian philosophy has been immense. His teachings continue to inspire millions of people around the world, and his legacy as a great spiritual teacher and thinker lives on to this day.
Hatha Yoga Lineage
The Hatha Yoga lineage can be traced back to the ancient texts of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and the Shiva Samhita. These texts were written in the 15th century and earlier and served as a guide for the practice of Hatha Yoga.
One of the most prominent figures in the Hatha Yoga lineage is Gorakhnath, who is believed to have lived in the 9th or 10th century. Gorakhnath is said to have been a disciple of Matsyendranath, another important figure in the Hatha Yoga lineage.
Later, in the 19th and 20th centuries, several Indian gurus helped to popularize Hatha Yoga in the West. One of the most famous of these gurus was Swami Sivananda Saraswati, who founded the Divine Life Society in 1936 and wrote extensively on yoga and Vedanta. Swami Sivananda's disciple, Swami Vishnudevananda Saraswati, went on to found the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers in the 1960s, which played a significant role in spreading Hatha Yoga throughout the world.
Other prominent Hatha Yoga teachers include B.K.S. Iyengar, who developed the Iyengar Yoga method, and Pattabhi Jois, who developed the Ashtanga Yoga method. Both of these methods have become very popular and influential in the modern yoga world.
Today, the Hatha Yoga lineage continues to evolve and grow, with many new teachers and practitioners adding their own unique contributions to the practice. Despite its ancient roots, Hatha Yoga remains a living tradition that continues to inspire and transform people around the world.

YOGA - A Unique Understanding of its Benefits to America’s Culture
(I)
The question of real, lasting world peace concerns human beings, so basic human
feelings are also at its roots. Through inner peace, genuine world peace can be achieved. In
this the importance of individual responsibility is quite clear; an atmosphere of peace must
first be created within ourselves, then gradually expanded to include our families, our
communities, and ultimately the whole planet - Tenzin Gyatso
During the latter part of the 20
th
Century, western civilization made a major impact on
Indian society. Today it appears that the impact of India’s culture and philosophy has in turn,
influenced much of western culture, more specifically in this research paper, American society.
How does India’s philosophy, particularly the sense of well-being, influence western society into
living a more conscious filled life?
Firstly, at the heart of well-being is a healthy lifestyle. Recently I traveled abroad and
spent time speaking with different people from different cultures to try to understand the
meaning of healthy living. What I discovered was that people from different walks of life have
different ideas of what healthy living means. For example in America, it seems that healthy
living is tied with how much exercise one gets whereas in Italy, I am told healthy living has to do
with your diet and sleeping. If you speak to someone over the age of forty, you may hear that
healthy living has to do with your focus and how you stimulate your mind. In fact, this is the
belief system of those who incorporate Ayurveda into their daily lives. The ancient science of
Ayurveda, (living a long and healthy life), dates back over 5,000 years ago and may be the oldest
known health care system. Ayurveda stimulates both mind and body by promoting well-being
and good health through a variety of practices. This research paper is meant to show how such
practices have influenced the world. What began mainly as a belief system in Asia and India has
now surfaced in western societies and in particular in America. This cultural influence can be
seen through the study of yoga and all of its benefits to the human body. Throughout my research
I have discovered how much influence yoga truly has had and I will not only prove its benefits
but share the true meaning of what the term yoga means.
In order to bring light to India’s cultural influences in America and more importantly,
how it pertains to this research paper, it is necessary to distinguish the two differences. To begin
with, India’s belief system includes both religions and philosophies that explain basic questions
of human existence. In fact, in order to understand the magnitude of influence it is important to
note that many of today’s influences began during the Foundation Era (8000 BCE to 600 CE).
There are two major relig.
Maha Yogi, Adinath, Yogeshwar, and Adiyogi are some of the names of Lord Shiva. He is part of
the Trinity, Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesha, that controls the cosmic universe. Shiva is the
destroyer who possesses the power to eradicate all evil from the Universe. Few are aware of
Lord Shiva's deep connection with Yoga.

16. In 2008, HAF members examined Yoga Journal’s

Saw no reference to Hinduism, or its Philosophy
Concluded that it associated other religions
with yoga more than it did Hinduism

26. The earliest records of apparent yoga practice
were found in Indus Valley archaeological relics
that dated to the third millennium B.C.E.
They Included a seal depicting a man
seated in lotus posture and a sculpture of a
meditating man in lotus.
EVIDENCE:
29. The earliest Sanskrit verses (circa 1500-
1000 B.C.E), known as the Vedas,
contained some themes that may have
been antecedents of yoga theories and
practices……
31. The Bhagavad Gita (circa 300 B.C.E), part of
an epic known as the Mahabharata, was a
philosophical cornerstone for yoga……
EVIDENCE:
Written in verse, it was “a yogic
teaching…..conveyed from guru to
student.”
33. The Yoga Sutras, a series of aphorisms
authored by the Indian philosopher Patanjali,
were also among yoga’s most important
precursors.
Dates for Patanjali were unclear, but
historians believed the Yoga Sutras were
most likely written after the Bhagavad
Gita.
39. The argument of Shukla was that “Hindu” was a
12th-century Persian abstraction “referring to the
people they found espousing Santana Dharma, the
eternal wisdom of life, ” and that “today, Santana
Dharma and Hinduism are synonymous.”
Also, one historian noted that yoga was
“technically a part of three ‘world religions’:
Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.
