This document discusses bowel preparation prior to surgery to reduce risks. It describes two types of preparation: mechanical which involves diet changes and laxatives/enemas 1-4 days before surgery, or rapid preparation using whole gut irrigation via NG tube until clear fluids; and chemical which uses intestinal antiseptics like neomycin or metronidazole for 2 days or systemic antibiotics pre- and post-operatively like cephalosporins with metronidazole. The goal is to empty the large bowel and reduce bacterial flora to prevent anastomosis leakage and wound infection.

2. Benifet
• The Risk of anastomosis leakage and wound sepsis
is reduced if large bowel is empty at the time of
resection and if the bacterial flora of the colon is
reduced.

3. Type of preparation :
🅰️ Mechanical preparation :
▫️ Standard preparation :
- low - Reduce dait 4 days befor surgery
- Enemas and laxatives 2-3 days befor surgery
▫️ Rapid preparation :
- Alternative method can be performed one day befor surgery
- whole Gut irrigation using 2-4 liter /hour of balanced Crystalloid
solution pass Via NG tube until the patient passed clear fluid per
Rectum ( Note : this method is not used in cardiac or renal patient )

4. 🅱️ Chemical preparation :

- Neomycin inj
- Metronidazole drip
