Bonfire Night is celebrated on November 5th to commemorate Guy Fawkes' failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Guy Fawkes and other Catholic conspirators planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London while King James I and the Protestant government were inside, in an attempt to return England to Catholic rule. They stored 36 barrels of gunpowder in cellars beneath the Houses of Parliament but were caught before they could light the fuse when one of the plotters sent an anonymous letter warning a friend not to attend Parliament on November 5th. Bonfire Night celebrations today involve fireworks displays and bonfires to burn effigies of Guy Fawkes.
