The Gunpowder
     Plot
In 1605 King James I was the King of England.
Not everybody in England liked him. Catholics
were angry that the Protestant King and
Parliament would not let Catholics practise their
religion.
A man called Guy Fawkes decided to
blow up the Houses of Parliament
with the King inside.
Guy Fawkes and his friends planned
to use gunpowder to blow up the
King’s throne.
They put 36 barrels of gunpowder
in the basement of the Houses of
   Parliament on November 5th.
Somebody found the barrels. The
king’s soldiers arrested Guy and his
friends for trying to kill the King.
They tortured Guy Fawkes until he
confessed. Then they hung him.
Every year on November 5th the
British remember the gunpowder
plot. They have fireworks outside.
They burn bonfires and put a model
of Guy Fawkes on top to remember
how his plan failed.
