The bombardier beetle is able to shoot out a boiling liquid from its abdomen using an exothermic chemical reaction. It stores hydrogen peroxide in one compartment and hydroquinone in another, and when these two chemicals mix together along with a catalyst, the reaction creates gas pulses that propel the hot liquid outward for protection without harming the beetle. The reaction forms benzoquinone, water, and releases heat equal to the temperature of boiling water.
