Structural Organization of Matter
1. Chemical Level
a. Atoms
Proton, Neutron,
electrons
b. Molecules
Two or more atoms
joined together
Structural Organization of Matter
2. Cells
Smallest structural and
functional units of the
human body
Structural Organization of Matter
3. Tissues
Group of cells and the
materials surrounding them
that work together to
perform a particular
function
4. Organs
composed of two or more
tissues work together to
provide specific functions
and they usually have
specific shapes)
Structural Organization of Matter
5. System
System is a group of
organs that work together
to accomplish a common
purpose (each organ has
its own job to do
6. Organismal level
represents the highest
level of structural
organization( total of 11
organ systems)
Body systems: The human body has 11
systems
1-INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM
ORGANS
• Skin
• Hair
• Nails
FUNCTIONS
Skin is a major organ responsible for:
• Protection of body.
• Regulation of body temperature.
• Elimination of body wastes
2-SKELETAL SYSTEM
ORGANS
• Bones
• Cartilages
• Ligaments
• joints
FUNCTIONS
• Protects & supports body organs
• Framework for muscles & movement
• Hematopoiesis; store minerals
3- MUSCULAR SYSTEM
ORGANS
• Skeletal muscle (attached to bone)
• Smooth muscles
• Cardiac muscles
FUNCTIONS
• Contraction & mobility (locomotion)
• Facial expression, posture
• Produce body heat
4- NERVOUS SYSTEM
ORGANS
• Brain
• Spinal cord
• Nerves
• Special sense organs like eyes, ears
FUNCTIONS
• Fast-acting central control system
• Responds to external/internal stimuli
via nerve impulses (electrical
messages)
5- ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
ORGANS
• Hypothalamus
• Pituitary gland
• Thyroid gland
• Parathyroid gland
• Adrenal gland
• Thymus, pancreas, pineal, ovaries,
testes…..etc.
FUNCTIONS
• Regulation of body activities by
releasing hormones.
6- CARDIVASCULAR SYSTEM
ORGANS
• Heart
• Blood vessels- arteries and veins
• Blood
FUNCTIONS
• Heart pumps the blood through the
blood vessels
• Blood Carries O2,nutrients, hormones,
& other substances to the cells and
takes away the wastes and carbon
dioxide from the cells
7- LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
ORGANS
• Lymphatic vessels
• lymph nodes
• Spleen
• Tonsils
• Thymus
FUNCTIONS
• Return proteins and fluids to the
blood
• Removes bacteria, toxins and other
foreign bodies from tissue
• Lymph serves as on important route
for intestinal fat absorption
8- RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
ORGANS
• Nasal cavity
• Pharynx
• Larynx
• Trachea
• Bronchi
• Lungs
FUNCTIONS
• Keeps blood supplied with O2 &
removes CO2
• Carries out gas exchanges through
air sacs in lungs
9- DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
ORGANS
• Oral cavity
• Pharynx
• Esophagus
• Stomach
• Small & large intestine
• Salivary glands
• Liver & gallbladder
• Pancreas
FUNCTIONS
• Digestion of food
• Absorption of nutrients
• Elimination of wastes
10- URINARY (EXCRETORY) SYSTEM
ORGANS
• Kidneys
• Ureters
• Urinary bladder
• Urethra
FUNCTIONS
• Production, storage and elimination
of urine
• Regulation of volume and chemical
composition of blood
• Regulates water, electrolytes, & acid-
base balance of the blood
11- REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
ORGANS
Male
 Testes
 Ductus deferens
 Seminal vesicles
 Prostate gland
 Penis
FUNCTIONS
• Production of gametes
• Release of hormones that regulates
reproduction and help in development
of secondary sexual characteristics
11- REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
ORGANS
Female
 Ovaries
 Uterine tubes
 Uterus
 Vagina
 Mammary glands
FUNCTIONS
• Production of gametes
• Release of hormones that regulates
reproduction and help in development
of secondary sexual characteristics
• Mammary glands are for lactation
