MANAGEMENT
Spill
“To cause or allow (a substance) to run or fall
out of a container.”
Spills in a hospital can be:
a. Biological spill
b. Chemical spill
c. Mercury spill
d. Radioactive material spill
Biological spill
“Spillage of blood or body fluids.”
Type of spill :
a. Spot
b. Small spill
c. Large spill
Biological spill
Spot cleaning
Wipe up spot immediately with a damp
cloth, tissue or paper towel. An alcohol
wipe may also be used.
Discard contaminated materials in
yellow bag
Wash hands
Biological spill
Small spills (Up to 10 cm)
Wear appropriate protective clothing and gloves.
Cover the spill completely with absorbent material.
Remove the absorbent material
Clean with detergent.
Flood the area with freshly made 1:10 dilution of
sodium hypochlorite solution, and let it stand for 15-20
minutes
Wipe up the disinfectant.
Dispose of all materials safely in accordance with
biohazard guidelines.
Biological spill
Large spill ( < 10 cm diameter)
Collect cleaning materials and equipment.
Wear disposable cleaning gloves, eye wear and
plastic apron
Cover area of the spill with paper towel .
Cover area of the spill with granular chlorine releasing
agent with 10000ppm available chlorine and leave for
3-10 minutes depending on manufacturer’s
instructions.
Use disposable scrapper (e.g. cardboard) to scoop up
granular disinfectant.
Discard contaminated materials in infectious waste
bag.
Wipe area with paper towel to remove any remaining
blood.
Use warm water and detergent to mop the area .
Mop with sodium hypochlorite
Chemical Spill
Open doors and windows for ventilation
Identify the chemical
Take necessary precaution
Use appropriate PPE
Use disposable towel to contain the spill
Dispose off in black bag
Rinse the area with plenty of water
Chemical spill
Store in a location inaccessible to other
persons and away from traffic
Danger symbol should be posted at the
storage location.
MSDS should be displayed
Splashing on body parts report to the
emergency room.
Staff should be trained regularly on the
hazards
Radioactive spill
Estimate the activity involved and the nature of the
contamination.
Confine the spill and prepare to decontaminate;
notify at once all other persons in the room and/or area;
Clear the area, and persons not involved in the spill should
leave immediately;
Close off and secure the spill area to prevent entry and post
warning signs;
Wear disposable gloves and apron and clean up the spill
using absorbent paper and place the contaminated
materials in a radioactive waste container;
Wash with an appropriate detergent and disposable towels.
Report the spill and clean up to the supervisor and to the
RSO
Record spill details and contamination monitoring details

  • 2. Spill “To cause or allow (a substance) to run or fall out of a container.” Spills in a hospital can be: a. Biological spill b. Chemical spill c. Mercury spill d. Radioactive material spill
  • 3. Biological spill “Spillage of blood or body fluids.” Type of spill : a. Spot b. Small spill c. Large spill
  • 4. Biological spill Spot cleaning Wipe up spot immediately with a damp cloth, tissue or paper towel. An alcohol wipe may also be used. Discard contaminated materials in yellow bag Wash hands
  • 5. Biological spill Small spills (Up to 10 cm) Wear appropriate protective clothing and gloves. Cover the spill completely with absorbent material. Remove the absorbent material Clean with detergent. Flood the area with freshly made 1:10 dilution of sodium hypochlorite solution, and let it stand for 15-20 minutes Wipe up the disinfectant. Dispose of all materials safely in accordance with biohazard guidelines.
  • 6. Biological spill Large spill ( < 10 cm diameter) Collect cleaning materials and equipment. Wear disposable cleaning gloves, eye wear and plastic apron Cover area of the spill with paper towel . Cover area of the spill with granular chlorine releasing agent with 10000ppm available chlorine and leave for 3-10 minutes depending on manufacturer’s instructions. Use disposable scrapper (e.g. cardboard) to scoop up granular disinfectant. Discard contaminated materials in infectious waste bag. Wipe area with paper towel to remove any remaining blood. Use warm water and detergent to mop the area . Mop with sodium hypochlorite
  • 7. Chemical Spill Open doors and windows for ventilation Identify the chemical Take necessary precaution Use appropriate PPE Use disposable towel to contain the spill Dispose off in black bag Rinse the area with plenty of water
  • 8. Chemical spill Store in a location inaccessible to other persons and away from traffic Danger symbol should be posted at the storage location. MSDS should be displayed Splashing on body parts report to the emergency room. Staff should be trained regularly on the hazards
  • 9. Radioactive spill Estimate the activity involved and the nature of the contamination. Confine the spill and prepare to decontaminate; notify at once all other persons in the room and/or area; Clear the area, and persons not involved in the spill should leave immediately; Close off and secure the spill area to prevent entry and post warning signs; Wear disposable gloves and apron and clean up the spill using absorbent paper and place the contaminated materials in a radioactive waste container; Wash with an appropriate detergent and disposable towels. Report the spill and clean up to the supervisor and to the RSO Record spill details and contamination monitoring details
