Editor's Notes
- Welcome to the first lesson for Virteasy Dental and the default pre-clinical curriculum.
- A few reminders from the induction on the simulators, as there was a lot of information to take in.
- Before students start using the simulator, it is important that they adjust it to their correct height, so that their posture can be correct.
- It’s really important to stress the need for good posture. Habits picked up at the simulator (good or bad) will often be replicated in the clinic - so it’s worth getting this right straight away.
- The students should attempt to pick up the handpiece of the haptic arm in the same way as a dental piece within the clinic. It is worth practicing and validating this before going into any simulations. CAREFUL: The haptic arm is expensive and delicate. Students should be trained on the proper, careful use and should never over exert force beyond the capabilities of the haptic arm.
- On to today’s lesson...
- Today’s exercise will be HRV_0001 which can be found in the familiarisation category for the students. The blocks ‘C’, ‘D’ and ‘E’ represent caries, dentin and enamel, respectively. The purpose of today is to learn some basic anatomy of teeth and to be able to feel the difference between the three layers.
- Before starting the exercise, it’s important to have an understanding it what the different blocks represent
- The basic anatomy of a tooth, using Virteasy Editor and a basic diagram.
- This gives an idea into the makeup of the anatomy of a tooth.
- Understanding that the tactile feedback will change, gives an appreciation into the skill required when drilling.
- Within Virteasy Editor you can hide / show each of the materials to help display the anatomy of teeth.
- The tortoise represents the slower speed burrs and the hare represents the faster speed burrs.

- Using a haptic simulator allows students to feel the difference between the materials to backup the theory they’ve learnt.

- In order to calibrate the simulation you need to launch the calibration tutorial by clicking the target button (bottom left). STEP ONE: Calibrate the VIRTUAL scene by positioning your VIRTUAL hand so it’s in contact with a tooth. KEEP STEADY and press the foot pedal ONCE. STEP TWO: Calibrate the REAL world by positioning your REAL hand so it’s correct on the finger rest. KEEP STEADY and press the foot pedal ONCE. COMPLETE.
- If you like, you can gamify the session by having a score board. This could also be done using flipcharts.
- By clicking the tick button students will access the 3D model of their work and the self assessment questions. They can also login to Assistant to leave any remarks or self reflection.
