District 9 Movie Analysis
District 9 (Peter Jackson, 2009), a science fiction film produced by Peter Jackson, is a rare gem unlike
the many sci fi movies which have been released in our time. The story is established via a mix of
standard third person camera and documentary footage and takes place in the present a twist from
your regular science fiction film which normally takes place in the future. The film, about a colony of
alien refugees forced by humans to live in a South African slum, is an example of social satire by
presenting a critique of the injustice with which we treat those who are different from us. The
metaphors of science fiction are being used to portray the nature of racism; with the way that racist
ideology and discourse deals with those different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This scene is indescribably chaotic. While operating alien weaponry, Wikis is leading Christopher
back to the mothership by protecting him through killing of any humans in their way. Wikus is the film
s hero.
The end of the film leaves us with questions unanswered. We dont know if Wikus will ever find his
way back to his old life as a human among other humans. The last scene shows Wikus fully
transformed into an alien, building a flower out of scrap metal. Is Wikus more at home now than he
has ever been as a human?
In producing District 9, Jackson s intention was to address racism as an ideology by forcing the
viewers to be the racist. At the beginning of the film, when we are introduced to the aliens that reside
in District 9, we immediately despise them. The Prawns themselves exhibit human like characteristics
(ie. two arms, two legs, stand up right) but also exhibit grotesque characteristics. The aliens are filthy,
violent and vulgar as we catch them consistently using foul language. They live in a slum that is
decaying, crumbling and full of garbage, not by choice, but forced by humans. The aliens are
ostracized and barred from most businesses and those humans who live in near proximity to the aliens
want more distance. They are the enemy. We are also introduced to the Nigerians who barter with the
Prawns for weaponry in exchange for cat food. The Nigerians have a witch doctor who advises them
to eat the aliens, which they do. We also learn

Nuclear Power Sources For Space Exploration
Nuclear powered unmanned space vehicles (USVs) represent the future of deep space exploration.
Deep space missions require a power source that can travel further, go faster, and last longer than
traditional chemical rockets or solar powered propulsion systems; nuclear powered platforms provide
an ideal alternative. The United States is currently working cooperatively with other countries to
research and develop nuclear power sources for space travel. Examples of unmanned deep space
missions include space exploration, payload delivery, and asteroid interception. The purpose of this
paper is to explore the different options that nuclear power can provide for platform power,
propulsion, and maneuverability that meet the specific demands ... Show more content on

Chemical rockets alone are not practical for deep space missions and alternative solutions need to be
examined (Malagari Sullivan, 2015). Autonomous unmanned spacecraft will be able to successfully
fulfill the long term vision of interplanetary travel; performing research and resupply but the right
energy and propulsion system once in orbit must be utilized. The one technology that currently meets
the criteria to power unmanned spacecraft while in orbit are nuclear powered propulsion systems.
When discussing spacecraft power and propulsion systems it must be understood that there are two
parts that must be considered; the first is the rocket booster which launches the spacecraft into orbit
and the second is the power system that moves the payload to its final destination (Chiravalle, 2008).
As of now, no platform has been launched into space by nuclear power but it is feasible. The National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has considered using nuclear assisted boosters along
with chemical rockets to launch spacecraft which would reduce mass and reduce cost (Sample, 2001).
Once the platform is in orbit, nuclear power has proved to be successful in unmanned rocket missions
(Malagari Sullivan, 2015). One of the most notable USVs is

Rotc Personal Statement
I have always had an interest in military service. I believe that it is important for a person to serve his
or her country in the best way that they can, and for me, I think that best contribution I can make is
through service in the military. For a long time I intended to pursue a career in the Navy through the
ROTC program at Arizona State University. However, in June of 2014 that plan changed. My older
brother had just been accepted to the Air Force Academy and my father and I drove him to Phoenix to
meet with other accepted students from Arizona. I particularly remember one of the generals coming
over to our table and asking me if I was going to be cadet; I told him that I wanted to. The general
smiled and told me Well, you can . Until he said that I hadn t realized that acceptance to a service
academy was a goal within my grasp. At that moment I knew I was going to apply. ... Show more

I have been on the team for the last two years and I have achieved quite a bit, both as an individual
and with my team. More importantly, through Academic Decathlon I have learned self discipline, how
to encourage others, how to handle stress, and how to take responsibility for myself. The most
important factor in Academic Decathlon is self discipline; it is up to you to make yourself study and
achieve your goals, no one else can do that for you. I have also learned how to be a leader. My coach
has told me that my hard work inspires others, my positive attitude encourages moral, and my
enthusiasm for what I do contributes to a positive work environment for my teammates. I have also
learned how to take responsibility for my actions and accept that no one else is responsible for my
failures but me. These are all attributes that I believe would translate well into a service academy

Battle Of Peleliu Essay
When people think of battles during World War II they immediately think of Pearl Harbor, the Battle
of Midway, and troops storming the beach of Normandy. Rightfully so, seeing that they are some of
the most significant battles of the war, but the Battle of Peleliu is just a significant. A tiny island
nestled in the Palau Islands, the island of Peleliu was the site of one of the bloodiest engagements of
the war. This paper will discuss the history of the battle of Peleliu using information gathered through
extensive research. It will also address the intelligence available to the Allies which perhaps led to a
high number of casualties and an alternate outcome that could have saved the lives of thousands.

According to HistoryNet (1948) Marine Corps General William H. Rupertus commanded the 1st
Marine Division in the assault against Axis forces, specifically the Japanese and their commander,
Colonel Kunio Nakagawa. More than 35,000 service members (27,000 Americans and 11,000
Japanese) were engaged in this significant battle of World War II. Of those troops, The United States
lost more than one third of their defense (9800), whereas more than 10,000 Japanese soldiers were
killed and 200 were captured. Research by Gypton (2004) identified that the 1st Marine Division,
comprised of the 1st, 5th and 7th Marine Regiment (MR), landed in their strategically placed locations
on the island of Peleliu on the morning of September 15th, 1944. Troops moved onto the island in
waves as they received cover fire from naval vessels and aerial strikes. The 1st MR was deployed on
the west, 5th MR would maneuver through the middle, and 7th engaged from the south, with a
mission to push enemy forces to the eastern part of the island. The Japanese, nestled in their respective
bunkers and caves, awaited the initial fire and further instruction from their higher headquarters. The
initial battle continued over the next month. Many engagements, such as the Bloody Nose Ridge,
which was one of the most gruesome, lasted until October 12th when the island was declared secure

The State s Transportation System
One of the challenges that the Texas government is failing to keep up with is the state s transportation
system due to the increased population. From 2000 2010 the population has grown by over 4 million
people. As of now Texas also has the largest transportation infrastructure in the nation. So can the state
of Texas keeps up with the projected increased population of fifty million people by 2040? Or will the
state cuts corners and let the infrastructure fall by the weigh side? These are two of the concerns that
Texans want answers to. As member of our communities we have to hold the Texas Department of
Transportation accountable to their mission statement; which is to provide safe and reliable
transportation solutions in Texas. To get ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The truth is, Texans already spend more than they should on the Texas transportation system. By
failing to invest in highways, the cost is shifted to consumers in the form of wasted time stuck in
traffic, damage to vehicles, accelerated tire wear, and increased likelihood of being in a serious
accident (The Cost). Drivers, truckers, visitors spend countless hours stuck in traffic, costing
businesses time and money, polluting the air, and the wear and tear of the roads (Agency 8). Also due
to congestion, costs the Texas economy 10.8 billion per year, which they push onto the citizens
through groceries and goods you buy that have transportation cost. The average annual hours of delay
a commuter has in a Texas Metro area are at or above 37 hours. The city of Houston leads delays with
about 50 hours per year. In 15 years if the transportation system is still underfunded could rise up to
74 hours (The Cost 2). Every driver in Texas should know what the differences that they are paying
for the transportation system being underfunded and well funded. Currently households are investing
$232 per year, which comes out costing drivers $6,095 in total vehicle use and maintenance cost. If
drivers invest an additional $279 reduces total vehicle cost to $4,228 and saves them $1,558. An
additional $402 more each year will also cut their cost to $3,652 and save them $2,041. So raising
highway investments will save drivers money in the long run. Drivers all know that vehicle

Analysis Of Frozen Assets By Diego Rivera
Paintings are expression in art form, they reveal the feelings of the painters, and convey the messages.
One of the greatest painter that can reflect the lives of the Mexican people is Diego Rivera. Diego
Rivera is famous for marrying a fellow Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, but is a notorious womanizer, also
famous for his paintings. In one of the paintings, Frozen Assets, Diego Rivera visited New York
during the Great Depression depicting the people and city in his paintings with colors with the
meaning behind it. Since the color is a big thing in paintings, the color gray that Diego Rivera paint on
Frozen Assets, probably represent the people facing in the Great Depression. The first two panels have
the color gray because people were suffering and not enough money and the last panel, it has more
light and have these bright colors. First, the first panel, the skyscrapers were there when Diego Rivera
arrived to New York, perhaps symbolizing that the unfinished city is frozen in time. The machines
below the skyscrapers are still there because probably, they are still building more, but stop since there
was great numbers of unemployment, the machines perhaps have stop working at that time. The
grayish color on the buildings probably represent that money ran out and people are facing the
consequences of the Great Depression. Then there is the train below the buildings, it is believed that
that train was running at that time Diego Rivera visited New York. The functional train

Frank Lloyd Wright s Influence On American Architecture
Frank Lloyd Wright (1867 1959) was one of the most well known American architects of the early
modern movement. His extensive portfolio of built works around the country demonstrates the many
styles that he worked in over his important career, including his Prairie Style and his Usonian houses.
He is important to the spread of modern architecture because of his large collection of iconic built
works. Additionally, he trained many young architects that spread his design philosophies.1 Because
of his far reaching influence and impact, many of his works are considered among the most significant
examples of American architecture, and he is widely known by both designers and the general public
for his contributions to modern design.
Wright s career began in Chicago, which is where many of his early significant works are located. He

Among his goals through his design career was the development of a democratic American
architecture style, which was cheap, available, and uniquely American in design. He also wanted to
discover the ideal state that combined individual liberty with rigid society. Designing a utopia (see U)
that was based on a unique social form was also among his goals.6 Early work in this style include his
four California block houses of 1923, which abstract the specific nature of the site into the design.
After his 1930s resurgence, he began work on Broadacre City (1934 5), his utopian vision for a new
life. The plan returned the city to a model based on individually owned tracts of land organized in a
rural democratic society. He believed this would free society from the tyranny of capitalism and allow
citizens to live in a pure unaffected state. He also made progress with his Usonian houses, which were
made from a kit of prefabricated parts to be as economic as possible. The first was the Jacobs
Residence (1936), followed by dozens more in the following

Bladder Research Paper
Bladder is one of the organ which is part of the urinary system of body. The major function of the
bladder is to store urine produced in the kidney prior to urination. The urinary system of the body
ensures the removal of wastes and excess fluid from the body in the form of urine. To ensure normal
urination to ensue, all the parts in the urinary system have to work in the right order. The process of
urine elimination begins in the kidney and ends in the urethra. Human body is composed of a pair of
kidneys which is bean shaped and located right under the rib cage each on one side of the spine (Keast

Sarcoptic Mange Research Paper
Sarcoptic mange is a common parasitic disease of the skin among mammalian species, including dogs.
In dogs, this non seasonal and highly contagious infection is caused by infestation with the mite
Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis (Espinosa et al. 2017). These adult mites have four pairs of short legs,
grow in a circular shape 0.2 0.6 mm long, and covered with small triangular spines (Arlian Vyszenski
Moher 1988). The ovigerous females can grow up to twice as large as males, and they burrow tunnels
in the host s stratum corneum to lay eggs. The mite has a direct life cycle that lasts from 10 13 days
(Arlian Vyszenski Moher 1988).
Demodectic mange is another persistent inflammatory parasitic skin disease among dogs. Two
subtypes of demodectic mange, squamous and pustular (Healey Gaafar 1977), are differentiated
according to the type of skin lesion seen. The parasites responsible, Demodex canis mites, are
commonly found in small numbers in the skin of healthy dogs. They are suspected to be transmitted
from carrier mothers to puppies shortly after birth (Unsworth 1946), but the otherwise the disease

Small, itchy, red pustules often develop, which worsen into severe crusting on the skin when the dog

Friday Night Lights, By Steven Hilliard Stern
In the book, Friday Night Lights, H.G. Bissinger depicts the culture of a small town called Odessa
where economic instability, racial prejudice, sexism, and poverty are common. The one thing this
town can truly hang onto is the local high school football team. In Miracle on Ice, directed by Steven
Hilliard Stern, the head coach of the American Olympic Hockey Team Herb Brooks is determined to
gather up an American team to beat the Russians in their own game, ice hockey. In both works, unity
is an important theme that is reached through different means. In Miracle the elements of
socioeconomic class and race were not a factor in unifying the team. While in Friday Night Lights
those factors were extremely important throughout the context of what unity means in the story. The
unity in Miracle is more constructive because it was more easily achieved because it was more well
defined, it was simply to defeat the Russians and bring glory and pride to the nation. Whereas in
Odessa the mission was more unclear. In a time where America was facing a Crisis in Confidence the
U.S. Olympic Hockey brought the nation together. Although Permian football was effective in
unifying and giving hope to many of its citizens, the football culture was also used to create division
among different races and social classes ,and therefore was destructive.
Representative sports is a common theme in both works which contributes to the unity within both
communities. In Sports Unites and Sports Divides,

Billy Gibbons Research Paper
Legendary Beard Fact: In 1984 Gillette offered Billy Gibbons and ZZ Top bandmate Dusty Hill
$1,000,000 to shave their beards in a commercial. He turned them down cold, and wouldn t do it today
for even twice the price. The reason? He dreads the thought of seeing his naked face in a mirror! He
said he was afraid he looked to much like Vincent Price.
Billy Gibbons is perhaps as famous for his chest length beard as he is for his music. As the founding
member of iconic Texas blues rock band ZZ Top, Billy, along with bandmate Dusty Hill have two of
the most famous beards in rock and roll. The third member of the group, ironically, named Frank
Beard, is the only member sporting a naked chin.
Billy started life as William Frederick Gibbons in Houston, TX, in 1949, son of Lorraine and
Frederick Royal Gibbons. He was born into a musical family, as his father was an orchestra leader and
concert pianist. Frederick worked, along with his cousin, legendary set decorator Cedric Gibbons, for
Sam Goldwyn at MGM Studios in Hollywood. The first instrument to pique young Billy s interest was
the drum, and his father sent him off to New York City to study with Tito Puente, the King of Latin
Music. Around his thirteenth birthday, Billy was gifted with his first electric guitar, and it was true

A Comparison Of The Film Mulholland Dr.
Sunset Boulevard was one of the first films to cover the gray area between glory and the fall of a
celebrity, but not the only one. Borrowing many plot points from this film, a lesser known 2001 neo

who orders the killing of her girlfriend Camilla (or Rita), who got the role Diane auditioned for. After
a series of dreams and illusions, crushed by the weight of truth and guilt, Diane takes her own life in
her apartment. There are many similarities shared between the two films as both Norma and Diane

August Wilson Fences
Sometimes you have to pick the gun up to put the gun down. This quote was said by Malcolm X, who
was an African American Minister and a human rights activist. It means that sometimes you have to
fight in order to achieve peace. I agree with what he said because in order to get what you want you
have to fight for it. Two literary works that reflect this quote are Fences, a play about the struggles of
African American before and during the Civil Rights Era in the 1950s and 60s, by August Wilson and
The Yellow Wallpaper a short story that shows the difference between women and men during that
time, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Fences shows the revolution the characters face, their actions and

The lack of acknowledgment in the play Fences between Troy and Cory cause their relationship to
decline even further. One of the greatest sources of disappointment in Troy s life is the fact that he
wasn t allowed to play pro baseball, Even though he used to hit homeruns in the Negro Leagues, he
couldn t go to the majors because of racial discrimination. He doesn t let Cory play football, because
he doesn t want Cory to feel what he felt during his time. Troy s lack of acknowledgment of Cory s
potential destroys Cory s dream by not signing the papers and not letting the college recruiter from

it affected his life. In this quote he speaks like a father who is making decisions for his son and his
future, even though the people around him is telling him that the time has changed and it is not like
before. Troy s lack of acknowledgment causes Cory to lose his dream and late Cory to leave the
house.
In the play Fences, Troy s demand for change caused him to revolt against the company. Even after

Major Depressive Disorder
Major Depressive Disorder: Depression is a clinical condition associated with the normal emotions of
bereavement and sadness. However, this condition does not pass on when the external causes of these
emotions dissolve and is usually inconsistent to their cause. In essence, the classic severe conditions of
depression have not been attributed to external precipitating cause. One of the most common
conditions of depression is Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), which is a psychiatric condition that
impairs moods, behavioral patterns, and thoughts for a protracted duration. This psychiatric illness
tends to impair the patient s social functioning and quality of life due to its impacts on cognitive
functioning. Some of the most common symptoms of the condition include difficulty in concentration,
weight change, minimal interest in pleasure, high rate of suicide, and physical impairment. The
severity of this disease was evident in the year 2000 when the World Health Organization ranked it as
the fourth cause of disability and premature death across the globe.
Review of Articles: As a result of its occurrence, severity, and likelihood to cause premature death
throughout the world, major depressive disorder has received much attention in the recent past to an
extent that it has been the subject of numerous studies and analyses. One of the recent studies to be
conducted on the topic examines the link between depression severity and neurocognitive function in

The Silk Road Essay
The Silk Road was an intricate and evolving network of overland trade routes that linked China, India,
and western Eurasia for centuries. The trade route was key to the diffusion and transportation of
technology, goods, religions, and language throughout Asia, the Mediterranean, Africa and southern
Europe. As the strongest link between major population centers in the largest landmass on earth, the
Silk Road was one of the most important of all long distance trade routes in human history.
Study of the Silk Road has made it obvious that Eurasian history was more than isolated histories of
Mesopotamia, Egypt, Europe, India, Southeast Asia, and China. In reality, for several thousand years,

But it was difficult for them to grow and store crops, so most traded with farming communities at the
edge of their grazing lands. The pastoralists would exchange livestock products for agricultural

Inner Eurasia now had channels of communication across Eurasia.
Early evidence of trade along the Silk Roads comes from the so called Oxus civilization, a group of
fortified farming and trading cities built about 4,000 years ago on the borders between modern
Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Archaeologists have found Chinese silks and goods from
India and Mesopotamia, and pottery and ornaments from Inner Eurasia. The archaeological evidence
leans toward the idea of cooperation between urban merchants and pastoralists. Over time,
sophisticated systems of trade emerged that was organized in caravans sometimes with hundreds of

Oftentimes, it takes something more powerful than us, something that floats on a higher cloud to
humble our senses and show us just how small and insignificant we really are to the vast realm beyond
what is Earth. In this rare case, all the authority begins within a single compact toy brick.
Legos: ancient little colorful pieces of plastic that have been around for over eight decades. Even
though they have been present, unchanged, and accessible for so long, below the surface of simple
construction, they hold the ability to prepare one for the real world.
Unlike the idealistic Barbie and her party going, way too perfectly fitted image of what all little girls

several different phases. There is hopefulness, anticipation, excitement, frustration, and just like in

The Portrait Of The British Royal And Prince Albert With...
The portrait of the British royal family Queen Victoria and Prince Albert with Five of Their Children
was painted by a German painter named Franz Xaver Winterhal. He was widely known for his
beautiful and elaborated portraits of royal women. The portrait of Queen Victoria and her family is
Wintergal s less well known portrait, but it is still very detailed image. In the artwork, the queen and
the prince are centered with their children surrounding them. Both are dressed in exquisite formal
wear decorated with a blue sash across their chest. Next to Queen Victoria is the young prince dressed
in red garment, who is looking at Prince Albert. On the right side of Prince Albert are two of their
daughters dressed in white dresses who are peering over an infant that is staring at something. While
in front of the queen and prince is another girl that is trying to walk. In the background of the painting,
it shows an open backdrop revealing a cloudy, blue sky with an ocean that stretches out in the
distance. Although this painting is not well known, it still portrays a sense of understanding of the
royal family. In the same context, all paintings or artworks holds its very own importance depending
on the eye of the beholder looking at the artwork, as it will be interpret by what knowledge they have

Themes In To Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee
Harper Lee s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, has won many awards and has created a significant spot in
the history of literature. Lee was brought up in the South, and that became a motivator for her to write
this novel. In the book, the author navigates us around the unjust world in the racially biased Southern
USA in the 1900 s, through the eyes of Jean Louise Finch, or as one may know her, Scout. The book is
a virtual portal to the world Scout lives in. Lee takes the readers on a journey in which Scout, a naive
but curious girl, discovers and fights many different kinds of discriminations which are based on race,
gender, family status and class. These aspects put one in a state of mind in which they experience a

It is used in the following lines It was no accident. I was sittin there on the porch last night, waiting. I
waited and waited to see you all come down the sidewalk, and as I waited I thought, Atticus Finch
won t win, he can t win, but he s the only man in these parts who can keep a jury out so long in a case
like that. And I thought to myself, well, we re making a step it s just a baby step, but it s a step. The
following words were spoken by Mrs. Maudie. This quote exemplifies the motif of growing up as it
shows that the Maycomb society is growing up and becoming more modern. In previous days, a black
man wouldn t be given a good lawyer or so much time to pass a verdict, which is, in a way growing
up. This can cause the society to change their views on many things, and traditions. Many different
families, black and white, came to hear the verdict, and after Atticus brilliantly proved Robinson to be
innocent, the crowd realises the torture that the negroes have been through. The white part of the
crowd would, however, never be able to stand in a shoe of a negro, and never truly understand what it
feels to be treated like a different species of human. The growing up of Maycomb had added lights to
the mindsets o many individuals, including Judge Taylor who gave Tom Robinson the advantage of
Atticus Finch, one of the best lawyers in Maycomb. But the society has already left the jury with a
forced answer, which inevitably favors the Ewells. And the only victim of this racist mindset is the
difference of skin colour in the two communities. This links to the thesis as this verdict has bought
Maycomb a closer bonding as one family, destroying the many unneeded traditions and customs
which harmed the society and its members. This court case indeed proved that growing up plays a big
part in a family relationship. It also caused Atticus to show his true potential in front of his children,

Pros And Cons Of Owning A Gun
Ethical Side
Freedom:
The main ethical debate is that gun ownership revolves around the freedom to bear arms. In the
second amendment from the Bill of Rights, the founding fathers wrote that A well regulated militia,
being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not
be infringed. This gives anyone (as long as they are not a convicted criminal) the unalienable right to
possess a firearm. In a democracy, we should not have to justify owning a gun. If we need one for
protection, hunting, or just because I have an interest in collecting firearms. It is really none of the
governments concern on why we have them unless someone plans on using them the wrong way.
Anyway, there are people who think that the government should ban something because of some
people who abuse it. Why not ban alcohol? Or cigarettes? Or even cars? All of those have caused
more causalities than gun ownership.
Protection:
Criminals exist, so I must protect myself. End of the discussion. Education services, mental health
evaluators, and even our law enforcement can t stop all violence because neither enforcement nor
prevention will work one hundred percent. That s why we have to take it on ourselves to protect
ourselves and the ones we love. We need more law abiding citizens. We could possibly have less mass
shootings, if the average properly trained citizen would provide such a defense to thwart the attacker.

Theme of Hope Hope in the face of adversity, hope in spite of the depression and mere survival they

emphasizes in The Road is hope: hope for a better world, hope that there are still good people out
there. McCarthy uses the son as a symbol of hope throughout the novel to engage and grasp the

McCarthy utilizes food as a sign of hope. Throughout the novel the father and son are constantly
fighting the struggle of running low on food. When they find the bunker of food the text is full of short
sentences Canned hams. , Corned beef which emphasizes the father s joy and almost disbelief of how
hopeful the future will be with the abundance of good. The way the father also repeatedly says oh my
god, when throughout the book he maintains a fairly non religious view, shows how it finding this
food gives the father hope. Other than the boy the father has hope in very few things. But one thing
which is shown throughout The Road is the father s sense of morals. The father always reassures the
boy and himself that they are the good guys which gives them the hope to keep persevere because they
are, to the father, keeping goodness in the world alive, carrying the flame. Cormac McCarthy presents
the cannibals as a lost hope in The Road. They are almost only referred to as the bad guys and are
described as if they are animals with no hope other than to survive. Choe 3 In the father s dream an

Essay about Animal Testing Should Be Outlawed
According to Biology Online, animal experimentation is defined as the use of animals in experiments
and development projects usually to determine toxicity, dosing and efficacy of test drugs before
proceeding to human clinical trials. Animal experimentation has been going on since ancient Greece
when Aristotle and Hippocrates first made their model of the human body based on what they had
observed through animal dissection. Then, Romans used animals to do more psychological tests on
animals like pigs, monkeys and dogs. After that, the Renaissance period took up physiological studies.
Since then, the 20th century had a huge increase in animal testing until 1980 when activists started

Also, people in favor of animal testing believe animals help advance the field of genetic testing. They
believe animal experimentation helps scientists study the genes and DNA within humans. However,
there are some flaws in their thinking.
Many believe that live animals are needed for all medical testing, but that is not true. Animals can be
replaced in the lab by using software instead. Scientists have the technology today to replace animals
with different types of software and computer models. This would eliminate the need for animals in
the lab. The FDA, EPA, and National Institutes of Health has developed systems and robots to
completely replace the need for lab rats. This software is very accurate and causes no distress to a
living creature. Instead of having to pay for, feed, and house a living animal, scientists have the
opportunity to use computers instead. These robots could be in labs as soon as next year (Goldman).
There are several other ways an animal can be replaced in the laboratory as well, such as: using
mathematical data, using biopsies from humans instead of animal autopsies, making human tissue
cultures to test vaccines, and many more ( Research Alternatives ). Scientists have a wide range of
alternatives available to them. Therefore, animal experimentation for medical advancement is not
needed.
Quite often, animal experimentation leads to false results and causes harm to humans instead of
helping them. Although scientists

Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first people to reach the top of Mount Everest. Ever

Automotive Aftermarket Analysis
Automotive Aftermarket Analysis
Industry Definition
The automotive aftermarket is a large contributor to the U.S. economy employing nearly 4.6 million
people. New replacement automotive parts such as alternators, brakes, lights, bumpers, fenders, and so
on, are parts referred to as aftermarket or functionally equivalent parts when made by a company other
than the original car manufacturer (Ford, Chrysler, Chevrolet, and others). This industry sells
automotive parts and other products used to maintain or repair light and heavy duty vehicles. Products
are sold both to consumers who repair or accessorize their own vehicles, the do it yourselfers (DIY)
and to professional service stations or installers like gas stations, auto repair ... Show more content on

Proprietary information has decreased the power of buyers as well as the power of sellers in the
aftermarket automotive industry. As the automotive industry becomes more advanced with the use of
computers and special tools the independent repair shops and consumer are losing the ability to make
repairs and replace parts. The information needed to work with the computers and special tools is held
by these specialty manufacturers. They continue to withhold any information in an effort to capitalize
not only on the sale of an automobile but also the repair. This disadvantage which is created by the
automobile manufacturers is being fought on Capitol Hill. The Right to Repair act has been gaining
support in an effort to make this proprietary information public and give the consumer the opportunity
to purchase these items in a competitive market.
Power of Suppliers
Large suppliers like Delphi, Johnson Controls and Visteon, and many thousands of smaller suppliers
and manufacturers make parts for auto companies under new vehicle programs and also make
replacement parts specifically for the aftermarket retailers and wholesalers. A wholesaler/retailer
typically buys from 200 to 300 vendors. Production programs for new cars typically include 5 to 10
percent of production that goes to the aftermarket. Long term supply contracts are rare, and in most
cases, several suppliers are available for any particular product (Hoovers, 2008).

The cloud is term that explains a type of technology that can be used anywhere. Just like the actual

Meaning that small business uses this type of cloud because it is not designed to hold large amounts of

to date everything is up to date and so on: A private cloud is a particular model of cloud computing
that involves a distinct and secure cloud based environment in which only the specified client can
operate. As with other cloud models, private clouds will provide computing power as a service within
a virtualized environment using an underlying pool of physical computing resource. However, under
the private cloud model, the cloud (the pool of resource) is only accessible by a single organization

explaining that organizations that have small security issues or are unpredictable meaning that they
may go out of business are the common types of organizations that use this business because it is hard

as it start the light dependent reactions which produces ATP and NADPH, which is needed in the light
independent reactions to make glucose. So without light, there is no ATP and NADPH produced and
thus no glucose produced, therefore the food chain cannot be started. Glucose is also needed to make
DNA and hormones for plant growth, it is also require during plant respiration. So it can be
established the light is vital for plant growth and it affects the height of plants indefinitely.
Photoperiodism:
Photoperiodism is the effect of the relative lengths of light and dark periods on plant growth. This
occurs when photoreceptor proteins e.g phytochromes are produced by plants in response to light
intensity or the absence of light. This in effect affects the height of plants. [5]
Phototropism:
Phototropism is the growth of a plant in the direction of its light source. Phototropism occurs due to a
hormone called auxin which is produced at shoot tips. Auxin influences cell division, if there is light
on one side then the dark side will receive more auxin and therefore more cell division will occur on
that side, which will force the plant to bend towards the light therefore affecting the height of the

Economic Changes In The South Essay
There were many changes to the South after a long and brutal Civil War. The most significant of these,
was the change to the overall economic system of the South. After Slavery and the cotton industry was
shattered, the South was left with figuring out how to fix a once rich land founded on slavery. The first
example of economic change in the South was in how African Americans began to support themselves
economically. Plantations in the South were virtually workerless after African Americans were
emancipated. Not only that, they were left economically in debt from the destruction caused by the
Civil War. This left the Plantation owners at a loss of ability to function and since most African
Americans didn t want to go back to work for plantation owners, the Black Codes were created. The ...

Sharecropping involved a landlord giving land for tenants to farm for a share of the crop. Tenants
rented this land and were also given supplies by their landlord such as seed, farming equipment and
fertilizer. Of course, these supplies were also rented and often the only person the tenant was allowed
to sell their crop to, was their landlord. The landlord decided what prices were available to the tenant
and how much things cost. Often crops were unpredictable and landlords were very unfair with their
prices. This would leave the tenants in debt that would carry over year after year. This, in a way, tied
the tenants to the land so that they could never leave the landlord and left them in a constant state of
crippling poverty. According to PBS.com, two thirds of all sharecroppers were white and only one
third were black. This of course has room for landlords, but this also implies that some sharecroppers
were white citizens left in complete poverty after the Civil War. Overall, the biggest changes in the
south were clearly economic and did not only affect the African American population, but the
European population as

Analysis Of The Marketing Ethics Of California Fitness
Fitness clubs usually have positive images since exercising is good for our health. The healthy images
might lower people s alertness towards their promotion practices. California Fitness is a well known
fitness gym and health club, it is the second large fitness chain store in Hong Kong. The company has
caused controversies because of their marketing activities. News articles reported that the Consumer
Council received a great number of complaints about California Fitness s sales practice. In this essay, I
will discuss one of California Fitness s marketing activities that involve marketing ethical issues. I
will apply the ethical values set by The American Marketing Association (AMA) in the discussion.

India s Post Colonial Populist Democracy
The recent experience of India s post colonial populist democracy with Moditva (the rise of Narendra
Modi as India s prime minister by mobilizing varied sections of the Indian population: corporates,
media, middle classes, Hindutva activists, a section of Other Backward Classes and Dalits along with
the poor) has fundamentally challenged the liberal conception of democracy. It is interesting to note
that a person widely regarded as anti minorities while ignoring the normative principle of rule of law
when protecting the minorities from majoritarian violence, gets elected by popular mandate. In this
respect, Moditva ( Modified version of Hindutva) might pose possible threats to India s democratic
processes in future.
Moditva is not just a specific political agenda with a personality cult but it can be called as what
Michael Freeden calls a micro ideology . As nationalism is a micro ideology in Freeden s parlance,
Moditva can be also described as a peculiar micro ideology . Previously, Hindutva had shown its
limitations by not ensuring electoral majority for the BJP in the 1990s. In contrast, Moditva has not
only ensured a clear majority for BJP (282 seats) with 10 seats more than the majority mark and over
60% seats for the National Democratic Alliance (336 seats) but has also got a large proportion of votes
31% for BJP and over 38% for NDA. Although, the vote share of the BJP led NDA is way below the
50% mark, in a competitive multiparty democracy with a history of

Soft Determinism Essay
Determinism isn t causality. Determinism is the meaning that all events that occurs with the universe
and the people, including moral choices are completely determined by previously causes that
happened in the past. That is also called the theme of Cause and Effect . Determinism can be differ in
many ways because it has five types of it, like Biological determinism, Behavioral determinism,
Social determinism, Environmental determinism, Compatibilism or also called soft determinism.
In my opinion the types of determinism are connected in a certain word, Behavior, because everything
that you do is in the concept of yourself behavior. The first type of determinism is the Biological
determinism is the one that all characteristics including physical and mental that everything is
determined by the human genetic nature, is that even in the Greek era the determinism was placed in
human life genetic life. The Behavioral determinism is that relacionated and reflexed in the human
behavior and our environment condition, be cause if we act out of our limit of manner, because in the
future we will have a different type of treatment to the people or to react in the bad situation. Social
determinism is very similar to the Behavioral Determinism, because you need to carry what to do with
people or inclusive with yourself you and destroy your social interactions. The Environmental
determinism is more relationated with the outside scenario, because it says that any Change the social
and cultural development in that time. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Maize in Pre-Columbian America
Maize is a wild plant and was discovered by Indians. It belongs to the same grass family as barley,
rye, rice, wheat, and oats. When the Pilgrims landed in North America in 1620, the Indians gave them
maize to eat. They also showed the Pilgrims how to grow maize. The Pilgrims called the maize corn ,
which mean grains and Americans still call it corn today. The word corn has a different meaning
depending on what country you are in. According to the Department of Agronomy at Iowa State
University, corn in England means wheat and in Scotland and Ireland, it means barley or oats
(www.agron.iastate.edu). By drawing on documents and reports from the Pre Columbian American
era, I plan to discuss how corn was discovered, the importance of it, and how it was used by Pre
Columbian Americans.
Corn originated in Mesoamerican. Archeological evidence of corn s early presence in the western
hemisphere was identified from corn pollen grain considered to be 80,000 years old and obtained from
drill cores 200 feet below Mexico City (www.agron.iastate.edu). Evidence from bat caves in New
Mexico also identified corncobs that were approximately 5,600 years old (www.agron.iastate.edu).
Corn was domesticated by the native people and it became the most important cultivated plant in
ancient America. According to Gibson and Benson, cultivated corn came about by natural crossings,
possibly with gamagrass to yield teosinte and then with backcrossing of teosinte to primitive maize to

The Importance Of Reading Books In Literature
Do all kids read comics? Will they enhance your reading skills? According to Kat Kan, the answer is
definitely a yes. In her article, What kinds of kids read comics? the author described a number of
instances which proved the conclusion she made. She said that every child either they are eager
readers or struggling/ special needs kids; kids who are not really into reading books will read comics
irrespective of what category they belong to. The author described about the eager readers in the first
page while directly relating it to herself and her experiences in childhood. She explained about how
young she was when she started reading comic books and how it was one of the reasons behind her
becoming a librarian. She spoke about her sons who were also interested in reading comics and the
story of how it lead the entire students group follow the same path. She talked about a girl who used to
come to library after school to talk about comics proving that even girls are into them.ESL kids and
struggling kids like special education were also focused by the author before writing this article. She
gave an example of an immigrant neighboring teen who had a hard time learning english but still
continued to read graphic novels and her disabled niece who completed reading chapter books later
on. Children who don t like reading books were the other group she mentioned about. I completely
agree with the author of this article. I personally experienced many

Essay about Aspects of Probation
There are times when almost everyone wonders exactly what the purpose of probation is, what kinds
of conditions can be imposed if someone is put on probation, and what roles the probation officer and
the court systems play in the scheme of things. If you know someone that is on probation it may not
hurt to know a little bit about the way it works and that is exactly what we will be talking about here.
Probation is one of the least restrictive penalties among the alternatives confronting a sentencing
judge. Probation is the conditional release of an individual by the court after he has been found guilty
of the crime charged. In the case of probation then, the individual has not been sentenced to prison,
although he may, in fact, have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The crime for which the person was arrested isn t dramatized and used as a reason for disrupting the
rhythm of his life.
The number of conditions that a judge can impose upon a person on probation is amazing and there
are some that make some of us wonder how they can actually make a person live a life that is not
theirs. There are many conditions of probation that a judge or a probation officer can impose upon the
probationer. Some of the conditions that can be imposed include: supporting his dependents and
meeting any other family needs, paying a fine or making restitution to the victim of the crime that was
committed, keeping a job if they have a suitable one and if not training for or getting one that is
suitable.
There are some conditions that are imposed because of the offense that the probationer was found
guilty of, for instance, refrain from engaging in a specific occupation, business, or profession bearing
a reasonably direct relationship to the conduct constituting the offense, or engage in such a specified
occupation, business, or profession only to a stated degree or under stated circumstances; refrain from
frequenting specified kinds of places or from associating unnecessarily with specified persons.
In a lot of cases conditions imposed include refraining from the excessive use of alcohol, or use of any
narcotic drug or other controlled substance without a prescription from a licensed

A comparision of the degree of Racism in To Kill A...
From Martin Luther King to Nelson Mandela and many more in between, people have tried to
encourage the condemnation of prejudice. Harper Lee and Mildred D. Taylor have tried to do this
using the medium of the novel. Many people would feel that the books could be set in the 19th century
due to the significance of the prejudice and racism involved. They are actually set in the 1930s and,
whilst these childhood accounts were written in the second half of the 20th century, the prejudice still
existed at the time of writing and still occurs in inexcusable amounts today. Throughout both books,
there are many instances where characters endure or cause suffering due to their unreasonable
prejudice. The authors use some similar and some differing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This is exactly what happened to Cassie, and is completely unjustifiable. The way the author enables
you to feel empathy for Cassie is what condemns prejudice.
More of this open prejudice appears in Mr. Barnett s shop, as he plainly ignores the black children in
favour of a white woman, who had a lot more shopping than the black children:
Mr Barnett walked to another counter and began filling the order, but before he finished a white
woman called, Mr. Barnett, you waiting on anybody just now? Mr. Barnett turned around, Just them,
he said, indicating to us with a wave of his hand. What can I do for you, Miz Emmaline? The woman
handed him a list twice as long as T.J. s and the storekeeper, without a word of apology to us,
proceeded to fill it.
After Mr. Barnett had displayed this blatant show of prejudice, Cassie went on to ask him why he
wasn t helping them. Mr. Barnett became exceptionally angry because he thought that Cassie was
acting outrageously just by talking back to him, even though she spoke very politely. This is partly
because he has no respect for black people in general but also because he just cannot believe that a
young black girl would have the moral courage to act differently to the norm. Even though she acts in
a manner that we could easily accept by today s standards, Mr. Barnett thinks that she is conceited and
a menace. This condemns prejudice because the reader cannot find any genuine reason that would

Postman s Analysis of Brave New World
Postman s Analysis of Brave New World
As analyzed by social critic Neil Postman, Huxley s vision of the future, portrayed in the novel Brave
New World, holds far more relevance to present day society than that of Orwell s classic 1984. Huxley
s vision was simple: it was a vision of a trivial society, drowned in a sea of pleasure and ignorant of
knowledge and pain, slightly resembling the world of today. In society today, knowledge is no longer
appreciated as it has been in past cultures, in turn causing a deficiency in intelligence and will to learn.
Also, as envisioned by Huxley, mind altering substances are becoming of greater availability ... Show

Texas Rebellion Dbq
In 1836, the Texans declared its independence from Mexico. Texas had declared their independence
from Mexico because the Texans had trouble being a part of Mexico and wanted their own
independence because the Texans had objected Mexico s way of governing. The Texans were justified
in declaring their independence, and they were honorable men fighting for their freedom. One reason
is that the government had not exactly listened to the Texans. Another reason is that the Texans should
have a choice for their independence since the original 13 colonies had also declared independence
when they felt they had been treated unfairly. And third, Mexico had not been treating the Texans
nicely, causing the Texans to rebel. All in all, the Texans had declared ... Show more content on

According to the website, history.com, it states Texans also adopted a constitution that protected the
free practice of slavery, which had been prohibited by Mexican law, (www.history.com). Some believe
that Texas was only declaring independence because they wanted to keep slaves. However, the real
reason was that Mexico had not been treating the Texans nicely, which had caused Texas to feel
betrayed. In addition, the youtube video mentions Austin traveled to Mexico City to meet the
government and discuss reforms however he was imprisoned because they suspected him of inciting
revolt he was eventually released but now even more people including Austin himself supported
independence, (www.youtube.com). Texans had tried to talk to the Mexico government about the
problem, however, the government had ignored the Texan s pleas. In short, the Texans were justified
in declaring their independence because the government had not been taking in their opinions and

Under the new constitution, there is a president and a prime minister. The prime minister has the most
power, and is the leader of the party that has the most seats in the parliament. The president selects
cabinet ministers who run government departments. The parliament, called the Vouli, has only one
house with 300 members who are elected every four years. Greece became part of the European Union
in 1981. The politics of Greece takes place in a parliamentary representative democratic republic,
whereby the Prime Minister of Greece is the head of government, and of a multi party system.
Legislative power is vested in both the government and the Hellenic Parliament. Between the
restoration of democracy in 1974 and the Greek government debt crisis the party system was
dominated by the liberal conservative New Democracy and the social democratic Panhellenic Socialist
Movement. The country is a significant agricultural producer within the EU. Greece has the largest

Morality And Technology And The Presence Of Technology
When young children read the well known fable in class, they are unaware that the story has a moral.
It has a lesson that the adults attempt to instill in them at the very beginning stages of their lives.
These lessons teach morality and begin to introduce certain values to children. In this way, every
person develops values throughout his/her life that are impacted by his or her environment, biology
and social constructs. Through these values, morality is developed and because each person has his or
her own unique values, morality is based upon the individual. All organisms have evolved throughout
their existence on Earth, but interestingly, humans are the only species that apply morals to their lives.
Morality and technology are manmade inventions. Morality relies on evolution and the presence of
technology.
In the essay Nonmoral Nature, Stephen Jay Gould uses examples of acts of survival that insects
commit in order to ensure their survival. However, because their instinctual acts of survival are
viewed as grotesque, these acts seem immoral to humans. Gould stated, If nature is nonmoral, then
evolution cannot teach any ethical theory at all (1211). This statement refers to the idea that the
sacrificing of the caterpillars and spiders is an act of survival. Animals and insects commit acts in
nature and in their environment because they do what is essential to survive. The animals and insects
do not stop to think about whether what they are doing would be

  • 2. District 9 Movie Analysis District 9 (Peter Jackson, 2009), a science fiction film produced by Peter Jackson, is a rare gem unlike the many sci fi movies which have been released in our time. The story is established via a mix of standard third person camera and documentary footage and takes place in the present a twist from your regular science fiction film which normally takes place in the future. The film, about a colony of alien refugees forced by humans to live in a South African slum, is an example of social satire by presenting a critique of the injustice with which we treat those who are different from us. The metaphors of science fiction are being used to portray the nature of racism; with the way that racist ideology and discourse deals with those different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This scene is indescribably chaotic. While operating alien weaponry, Wikis is leading Christopher back to the mothership by protecting him through killing of any humans in their way. Wikus is the film s hero. The end of the film leaves us with questions unanswered. We dont know if Wikus will ever find his way back to his old life as a human among other humans. The last scene shows Wikus fully transformed into an alien, building a flower out of scrap metal. Is Wikus more at home now than he has ever been as a human? In producing District 9, Jackson s intention was to address racism as an ideology by forcing the viewers to be the racist. At the beginning of the film, when we are introduced to the aliens that reside in District 9, we immediately despise them. The Prawns themselves exhibit human like characteristics (ie. two arms, two legs, stand up right) but also exhibit grotesque characteristics. The aliens are filthy, violent and vulgar as we catch them consistently using foul language. They live in a slum that is decaying, crumbling and full of garbage, not by choice, but forced by humans. The aliens are ostracized and barred from most businesses and those humans who live in near proximity to the aliens want more distance. They are the enemy. We are also introduced to the Nigerians who barter with the Prawns for weaponry in exchange for cat food. The Nigerians have a witch doctor who advises them to eat the aliens, which they do. We also learn ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Nuclear Power Sources For Space Exploration Nuclear powered unmanned space vehicles (USVs) represent the future of deep space exploration. Deep space missions require a power source that can travel further, go faster, and last longer than traditional chemical rockets or solar powered propulsion systems; nuclear powered platforms provide an ideal alternative. The United States is currently working cooperatively with other countries to research and develop nuclear power sources for space travel. Examples of unmanned deep space missions include space exploration, payload delivery, and asteroid interception. The purpose of this paper is to explore the different options that nuclear power can provide for platform power, propulsion, and maneuverability that meet the specific demands ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Chemical rockets alone are not practical for deep space missions and alternative solutions need to be examined (Malagari Sullivan, 2015). Autonomous unmanned spacecraft will be able to successfully fulfill the long term vision of interplanetary travel; performing research and resupply but the right energy and propulsion system once in orbit must be utilized. The one technology that currently meets the criteria to power unmanned spacecraft while in orbit are nuclear powered propulsion systems. When discussing spacecraft power and propulsion systems it must be understood that there are two parts that must be considered; the first is the rocket booster which launches the spacecraft into orbit and the second is the power system that moves the payload to its final destination (Chiravalle, 2008). As of now, no platform has been launched into space by nuclear power but it is feasible. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has considered using nuclear assisted boosters along with chemical rockets to launch spacecraft which would reduce mass and reduce cost (Sample, 2001). Once the platform is in orbit, nuclear power has proved to be successful in unmanned rocket missions (Malagari Sullivan, 2015). One of the most notable USVs is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Rotc Personal Statement I have always had an interest in military service. I believe that it is important for a person to serve his or her country in the best way that they can, and for me, I think that best contribution I can make is through service in the military. For a long time I intended to pursue a career in the Navy through the ROTC program at Arizona State University. However, in June of 2014 that plan changed. My older brother had just been accepted to the Air Force Academy and my father and I drove him to Phoenix to meet with other accepted students from Arizona. I particularly remember one of the generals coming over to our table and asking me if I was going to be cadet; I told him that I wanted to. The general smiled and told me Well, you can . The most important factor in Academic Decathlon is self discipline; it is up to you to make yourself study and achieve your goals, no one else can do that for you. I have also learned how to be a leader. My coach has told me that my hard work inspires others, my positive attitude encourages moral, and my enthusiasm for what I do contributes to a positive work environment for my teammates. I have also learned how to take responsibility for my actions and accept that no one else is responsible for my failures but me. After his 1930s resurgence, he began work on Broadacre City (1934 5), his utopian vision for a new life. The plan returned the city to a model based on individually owned tracts of land organized in a rural democratic society. He believed this would free society from the tyranny of capitalism and allow citizens to live in a pure unaffected state. In dogs, this non seasonal and highly contagious infection is caused by infestation with the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis (Espinosa et al. 2017). These adult mites have four pairs of short legs, grow in a circular shape 0.2 0.6 mm long, and covered with small triangular spines (Arlian Vyszenski Moher 1988). The ovigerous females can grow up to twice as large as males, and they burrow tunnels in the host s stratum corneum to lay eggs. • 16. Friday Night Lights, By Steven Hilliard Stern In the book, Friday Night Lights, H.G. Bissinger depicts the culture of a small town called Odessa where economic instability, racial prejudice, sexism, and poverty are common. The one thing this town can truly hang onto is the local high school football team. In Miracle on Ice, directed by Steven Hilliard Stern, the head coach of the American Olympic Hockey Team Herb Brooks is determined to gather up an American team to beat the Russians in their own game, ice hockey. In both works, unity is an important theme that is reached through different means. In Miracle the elements of socioeconomic class and race were not a factor in unifying the team. While in Friday Night Lights those factors were extremely important throughout the context of what unity means in the story. The unity in Miracle is more constructive because it was more easily achieved because it was more well defined, it was simply to defeat the Russians and bring glory and pride to the nation. Whereas in Odessa the mission was more unclear. In a time where America was facing a Crisis in Confidence the U.S. Olympic Hockey brought the nation together. Although Permian football was effective in unifying and giving hope to many of its citizens, the football culture was also used to create division among different races and social classes ,and therefore was destructive. He turned them down cold, and wouldn t do it today for even twice the price. The reason? He dreads the thought of seeing his naked face in a mirror! He said he was afraid he looked to much like Vincent Price. Billy Gibbons is perhaps as famous for his chest length beard as he is for his music. As the founding member of iconic Texas blues rock band ZZ Top, Billy, along with bandmate Dusty Hill have two of the most famous beards in rock and roll. • 19. A Comparison Of The Film Mulholland Dr. Sunset Boulevard was one of the first films to cover the gray area between glory and the fall of a celebrity, but not the only one. Borrowing many plot points from this film, a lesser known 2001 neo noir movie Mulholland Dr. tells the story of a young starlet named Diane (or Betty, in Diane s dream) who orders the killing of her girlfriend Camilla (or Rita), who got the role Diane auditioned for. After a series of dreams and illusions, crushed by the weight of truth and guilt, Diane takes her own life in her apartment. There are many similarities shared between the two films as both Norma and Diane suffer from mental health conditions and could not wake up from the illusion induced by the mental disorder (Diane committed suicide as soon as she came back to reality). Their fantasies about themselves and the film industry were not an imagined scenario that represents the realization of their impossible desires, since their wish to enter (or re enter) the industry was not totally impossible; but rather, the fantasy allows them to desire.6 Norma s fantasy of still being wanted by the industry leads to her going to Cecil B. DeMille s studio in real life, wanting to work with him again to produce her film Salomé. A better illustration of this idea is Diane s fantasy with her failed audition, in which she found closure. And I thought to myself, well, we re making a step it s just a baby step, but it s a step. The following words were spoken by Mrs. Maudie. This quote exemplifies the motif of growing up as it shows that the Maycomb society is growing up and becoming more modern. In previous days, a black man wouldn t be given a good lawyer or so much time to pass a verdict, which is, in a way growing up. This can cause the society to change their views on many things, and traditions. Many different families, black and white, came to hear the verdict, and after Atticus brilliantly proved Robinson to be innocent, the crowd realises the torture that the negroes have been through. The white part of the crowd would, however, never be able to stand in a shoe of a negro, and never truly understand what it feels to be treated like a different species of human. The growing up of Maycomb had added lights to the mindsets o many individuals, including Judge Taylor who gave Tom Robinson the advantage of Atticus Finch, one of the best lawyers in Maycomb. But the society has already left the jury with a forced answer, which inevitably favors the Ewells. And the only victim of this racist mindset is the difference of skin colour in the two communities. This links to the thesis as this verdict has bought Maycomb a closer bonding as one family, destroying the many unneeded traditions and customs which harmed the society and its members. This court case indeed proved that growing up plays a big part in a family relationship. It also caused Atticus to show his true potential in front of his children, and ... One of the major themes that Cormac McCarthy emphasizes in The Road is hope: hope for a better world, hope that there are still good people out there. McCarthy uses the son as a symbol of hope throughout the novel to engage and grasp the attention of his readers. Hope is what progresses the novel, therefore without hope there is nothing. The sons character is a symbol of hope to the father throughout the novel. In the father s perspective the son is almost described as holy, if he is not the word of god. god never ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... McCarthy utilizes food as a sign of hope. Throughout the novel the father and son are constantly fighting the struggle of running low on food. When they find the bunker of food the text is full of short sentences Canned hams. , Corned beef which emphasizes the father s joy and almost disbelief of how hopeful the future will be with the abundance of good. The way the father also repeatedly says oh my god, when throughout the book he maintains a fairly non religious view, shows how it finding this food gives the father hope. Other than the boy the father has hope in very few things. But one thing which is shown throughout The Road is the father s sense of morals. The father always reassures the boy and himself that they are the good guys which gives them the hope to keep persevere because they are, to the father, keeping goodness in the world alive, carrying the flame. Cormac McCarthy presents the cannibals as a lost hope in The Road. They are almost only referred to as the bad guys and are described as if they are animals with no hope other than to survive. Choe 3 In the father s dream an animalistic creature is scared off by the man and the boy, symbolizing how humanity after the end of the world is something to be afraid of. Essay about Animal Testing Should Be Outlawed According to Biology Online, animal experimentation is defined as the use of animals in experiments and development projects usually to determine toxicity, dosing and efficacy of test drugs before proceeding to human clinical trials. Animal experimentation has been going on since ancient Greece when Aristotle and Hippocrates first made their model of the human body based on what they had observed through animal dissection. Then, Romans used animals to do more psychological tests on animals like pigs, monkeys and dogs. After that, the Renaissance period took up physiological studies. Since then, the 20th century had a huge increase in animal testing until 1980 when activists started standing up against the labs. Activists have not been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, people in favor of animal testing believe animals help advance the field of genetic testing. They believe animal experimentation helps scientists study the genes and DNA within humans. However, there are some flaws in their thinking. Many believe that live animals are needed for all medical testing, but that is not true. Animals can be replaced in the lab by using software instead. Scientists have the technology today to replace animals with different types of software and computer models. This would eliminate the need for animals in the lab. The FDA, EPA, and National Institutes of Health has developed systems and robots to completely replace the need for lab rats. This software is very accurate and causes no distress to a living creature. Instead of having to pay for, feed, and house a living animal, scientists have the opportunity to use computers instead. These robots could be in labs as soon as next year (Goldman). There are several other ways an animal can be replaced in the laboratory as well, such as: using mathematical data, using biopsies from humans instead of animal autopsies, making human tissue cultures to test vaccines, and many more ( Research Alternatives ). Scientists have a wide range of alternatives available to them. Therefore, animal experimentation for medical advancement is not needed. Ever since that event occurred, climbers have also attempted to reach the top as well. The mountain became polluted and has been collecting more piles of debris because of this. After Hillary and Norgay s accomplishment, Hillary used his money to help the environment and encouraged mountain climbers to clean up their garbage. For instance, the first source states He also demanded that mountain climbers clean up the garbage that often got left behind on Mount Everest materials like used oxygen bottles, which climbers would discard because of their weight (The World s Highest Mountain). Mountain climbers who followed their steps often left behind waste. He did not want to pollute Mount Everest, therefore he asked the climbers to pick up the trash they could possibly leave. Abstract: This investigation was designed to compare the height of Pteridium aquilinum in a light area and a dark area of Rushy Plains, Epping Forest and to establish if light intensity does have an effect on the growth of Pteridium aquilinum, commonly known as Bracken. From my research it was clear that the height of Bracken is affected by abiotic factors, other than light intensity, such as: soil moisture, soil temperature, air temperature and soil pH so I had to control these factors. The most significant of these, was the change to the overall economic system of the South. After Slavery and the cotton industry was shattered, the South was left with figuring out how to fix a once rich land founded on slavery. The first example of economic change in the South was in how African Americans began to support themselves economically. Plantations in the South were virtually workerless after African Americans were emancipated. Not only that, they were left economically in debt from the destruction caused by the Civil War. This left the Plantation owners at a loss of ability to function and since most African Americans didn t want to go back to work for plantation owners, the Black Codes were created. The ... The landlord decided what prices were available to the tenant and how much things cost. Often crops were unpredictable and landlords were very unfair with their prices. This would leave the tenants in debt that would carry over year after year. This, in a way, tied the tenants to the land so that they could never leave the landlord and left them in a constant state of crippling poverty. It is interesting to note that a person widely regarded as anti minorities while ignoring the normative principle of rule of law when protecting the minorities from majoritarian violence, gets elected by popular mandate. In this respect, Moditva ( Modified version of Hindutva) might pose possible threats to India s democratic processes in future. • 43. Maize in Pre-Columbian America Maize is a wild plant and was discovered by Indians. It belongs to the same grass family as barley, rye, rice, wheat, and oats. When the Pilgrims landed in North America in 1620, the Indians gave them maize to eat. They also showed the Pilgrims how to grow maize. The Pilgrims called the maize corn , which mean grains and Americans still call it corn today. The word corn has a different meaning depending on what country you are in. According to the Department of Agronomy at Iowa State University, corn in England means wheat and in Scotland and Ireland, it means barley or oats (www.agron.iastate.edu). By drawing on documents and reports from the Pre Columbian American era, I plan to discuss how corn was discovered, the importance of it, and how it was used by Pre Columbian Americans. It has a lesson that the adults attempt to instill in them at the very beginning stages of their lives. These lessons teach morality and begin to introduce certain values to children. In this way, every person develops values throughout his/her life that are impacted by his or her environment, biology and social constructs. Through these values, morality is developed and because each person has his or her own unique values, morality is based upon the individual. All organisms have evolved throughout their existence on Earth, but interestingly, humans are the only species that apply morals to their lives. Morality and technology are manmade inventions. Morality relies on evolution and the presence of technology. In the essay Nonmoral Nature, Stephen Jay Gould uses examples of acts of survival that insects commit in order to ensure their survival. However, because their instinctual acts of survival are viewed as grotesque, these acts seem immoral to humans. Gould stated, If nature is nonmoral, then evolution cannot teach any ethical theory at all (1211).
