Respiration is the process by which organisms release energy from food through breakdown reactions with oxygen. There are two types of respiration: aerobic respiration, which requires oxygen, and anaerobic respiration, which does not. Aerobic respiration fully breaks down glucose and produces carbon dioxide, water, and a large amount of energy. Anaerobic respiration incompletely breaks down glucose and produces different end products with less energy yield, such as lactic acid or ethanol. The human respiratory system involves inhaling oxygen into the lungs and exhaling carbon dioxide. It consists of the nostrils, throat, trachea, bronchi, and alveoli in the lungs where gas exchange occurs through blood vessels in the alveolar walls.
