Respiration refers to two processes - breathing and cellular respiration. Cellular respiration occurs within cells and converts food into energy through a series of chemical reactions that require oxygen. It is the reverse of photosynthesis in plants. Respiration can be aerobic, using oxygen, or anaerobic, not requiring oxygen. Different organisms use various mechanisms for respiration, ranging from direct diffusion of gases in simple organisms to more complex systems using trachea, gills, or lungs to facilitate gas exchange with the environment.
